Tim Henry My husband's family were the Ratcliff/Radliff/Ratliff/Rackliff/etc. His grandmother, Mary J Ratcliff and two of her bothers went to AL from GA and she married the Canant there. The Ratcliffs had come from Randolph Co, NC to Buncombe Co, NC and then down to Gilmer Co, GA. Mary Jelillie Ratcliff was born in 06 Sep 1865 in Gilmer Co. Her daddy was James Thomas (Thomas) Ratcliff, Sr born 16 Jan 1812 in Buncombe Co, NC and he married Mary E Whiteside, born 27 Dec 1822, in Buncombe Co. I have worked on the Ratcliffs for many years and some of the kins of our Ratcliff went down to SC and then came over to Gilmer Co, GA. So NC and SC families went to Gilmer Co. 1. Parris
    2. Could someone look for my Parris family in Gilmer County books, please? Robert (Lee?) Parris married Lovina Tucker in 1836 in Gilmer County. I don't know anything else like parents or where they came from, etc. I know Robert was killed in Civil War in 1864 & Lovina supposedly died 6 months later. I don't know where they are buried. They had several children who were farmed out, apparently to other Gilmer County families after both parents died. Any information would be appreciated. Sandy Cardens

    1. Syniard or other spellings and Kell
    2. Rod or Leslie
    3. http://home1.gte.net/jmkell/AlexanderKell.htm Unfortunately in most of these historical books females get little if any attention. In many cases they are only referred to a daughters or by their married name. Kell is a historically sound name in Gilmer County but little reference is made on the facts surrounding their history. The first mention has to do with James Kell a Revolutionary War Vet who stayed in Ellijay. What is not said is he probably was part of the raiding party with Sevier in 1782 to burn the town of Ellijay to the ground because it had a sound "Indian" government at the time. It wasn't mentioned but perhaps James married a Cherokee because his sons were considered mixed bloods and were given allowances to stay in Gilmer if they renounced their heritage. The link above may help with some of the descendancy. Alexander Kell's genealogy lists a Georgianna but the Syniard name is not found on anything so far. Perhaps there was another marriage besides the one listed above. I can look further when I go to the library and see if anything shows up in anything else there. Also if you haven't tried it. there is a Kell Genforum. http://genforum.genealogy.com/kell/ Using the search word Elkin you may find your information and a cousin. Good luck, Leslie

    3. Gordon County was created in 1850. It was previously called Cass County. There are some mentions in the book concerning Gilmer County of Robertsons. a Mrs. W.F. Robertson was the manager of the White Path Hotel in 1886. A Thomas C. Robertson went to jail for murder in Gilmer County in 1849, served in Miledgeville which was the state capitol. Nothing more about him. On the 1830 census there was a Samuel Robertson, married with 7 children, farmer living in the Cherokee Indian Territory - not specific exactly where he was living at that time. He also shows on the 1831 census but not after that and no further mention of Samuel. All whites had to register if they were "working" land that belonged to the Cherokees. There is no Robinson or Roberson listed. Leslie
