I might have mailed you before, if so just delete, but I try to look and ask about any one that is talking about Gilmer co. Do you show any GADDIS or a Wm. Gladden that is married to a Sarah Anne Gladden in the Cemetery Book? Or any DOCKERY's in Gilmer Co. I just know some day some one will say YES, I do. Hi, Ray, Merry Christmas! How is your research going? I just got several pages sent to me from the book, "The Pence Family of Georgia, North & South Carolina, by Maxine LeGrant Pence. There is a lot of stuff about the Elliotts. I wish I could get my hands on it. Three Pence girls married Elliotts, and there is a lot of vital data on people in Lakey's family that I didn't know. Hope you have a good holiday season, and that next year will be a great one. Walter Allen Ballew 1894 - 1975 WWI is buried at Seventh Day Adventist Church according to Cemetery Inscriptions of Gilmer Co., Vol. II. No other Ballews listed at that cemetery. Other Ballews are buried in the county but no Violet or Daniel. I can list the others for you if that would help. Glenda Hogg There is Myrtle E. Cloninger Ballew 5-20-1895 d. 9-29-1972 buried at Mt. Hi Anita. i have Ballews also. Ray
Jack, According to Cemetery Inscriptions of Gilmer County, Georgia, Vol. II: Walter Allen Ballew, 1894 - 1975 WWI is buried in the Seventh Day Adventist Church Cemetery in Gilmer County, GA. There are other Ballews buried in various cemeteries in the county, but none of the names you mentioned. Four members of my family married into the Ballew family in the 1800's. I don't have personal information on your Walter BALLEW, but there used to be a gentleman on the McTAGGART-L that had quite a bit of information on a BALLEW line. I know his were in Cherokee County NC at one point and Ellijay wouldn't be much of a jump considering the propensity a lot of Cherokee Co. folks had for bouncing round GA, NC and TN. Searching for ancestors of Walter Ballew, born Apr 26, 1894 at a place unknown, died Sep., 1975 in Hot Springs, Garland Co., AR. His wife, Violet M. Sutton Ballew, born Sep 21, 1899 in Arkansas, died July 1979 in Ellijay, Gilmer Co., GA. They had at least one child, Daniel Alvin Ballew, date and place of birth unknown. Violet's death in Ellijay gives me reason to suspect that her son Daniel might have lived there at the time of her death, and that both Violet and Walter are buried in that area. Any help locating their gravesites, and descendants thru Daniel Alvin would be greatly appreciated. If you have ancestors from Transylvania Co., you may be interested in this. Last year I with the help of a couple of other very good researchers we created a email list that has become one of the best mailing lists ever. Transylvania Co., NC was in 1791 Buncombe Co. being formed from Burke & Rutherford In 1828--1851 Macon Co. included present-day Hogback & part of Eastatoe Twp of Transylvania Co. In 1838 Henderson Co. was formed from Buncombe In1861--the present day Transylvania County was formed from Jackson & Henderson In just a few weeks our Transylvania County's Internet genealogy group will celebrate its first anniversary. Our TransylvanCoGenList was founded on January 3, 2000 and has quickly grown into Transylvania County's largest, most active research resource. Today, almost a year later, the group has grown to 93 members! If numbers are an indicator of success, then this group is a smash hit. Yesterday, December 14, was a milestone day for this research group. At midday yesterday, the mind boggling 14,000th message was posted on the group's e-mail list since Janaury 3, 2000! Even more important than impressive quantity is the quality of the individual members -- among the nicest and best researchers found anywhere. This unique, privately owned research group was founded to create a warm, nurturing, sharing genealogy community in which information could flow freely between both newcomers to research and seasoned pros. The intentions have been realized many times over. Miraculous discoveries are the norm for this group because of the amazing level of communication and generous sharing. There is no charge for membership and neither is there ever a charge for the information that is shared freely among the members. Commercial, for profit or fee-based research activity is not permitted within the group. TransylvanCoGenList is organized around a central vehicle of communication, its e-mail list. But this is not the typical e-mail list which is very limited in scope and function. The e-mail list is linked to a members-only website and provides an array of support services and member benefits, such as downloadable historical files, stories, articles, and a constantly changing display of historic photographs from across the past of Transylvania County and from most of the old founding pioneer families. Many group members have discovered priceless surviving photos of direct ancestors and other family members through the collection. As an added benefit, the group's e-mail list gladly accepts attachments so that researchers can share large data files with the other members. Most members have made major discoveries through reading these shared files. 14,000 plus pieces of Transylvania County genealogy and history are preserved in the easy to use, searchable archives maintained on the group website as yet another valuable service for the members. The research community functions through fair and simple membership policies and guidelines that are nothing more than good manners and common sense. To preserve the sanctity and well being of this research community, all potential members must agree to abide by these policies before being accepted into the group and must work within our simple lines for continued membership. The group and its very unique approach is not for everyone, but for those wanting the richest and broadest possible experience exploring the past of Transyvlania County and its people, this is the very best resource available. Immediately following the holidays, the members of TransylvanCoGenList will begin a group-wide project to reintroduce themselves to one another as well as reintroduce their ancestors and lines. There's no better time for a new member to come aboard and be on hand for the detailed reintroductions. It's like starting the list all over again and giving everyone a chance to be a part of it all from the beginning. Just to name a few, among the many surnames represented in the group are Aiken, Allison, Anders, Alexander, Ashworth, Allen, Breese, Ashe, Barnett, Batson, Beard, Baird, Barton, Brevard, Bird/Byrd, Bishop, Bagwell, Blythe, Bowen, Bracken, Brown, Bryson, Butler, Burrell, Bowen, Cagle, Cantrell, Chapman, Case, Cooper, Clayton, Conley, Cisoon, Cox, Chastain, Denton, Davis, Davidson, Duckworth, Dunn, Erwin, Essary, Fisher, Freeman, Fletcher, Gash, Galloway, Garren, Gillespie, Glazener, Graveley, Grogan, Hamlin, Henderson, Hightower, Holden, Heath, Hefner, Henry, Hogsed, Johnson, Johnston, Jones, Justice, Justus, Jordan, King, Kitchen, Kilpatrick, Kuykendall, Killian, Lister, Lance, Loftis, Lyday, Mauldin, Mackey, Miller, McCall, McCrary, Mason, McGaha, McMinn, Merrill, Moore, Morgan, Morris, Mull, Neill, Norman, Norton, Nelson, Pettit, Nicholson, Orr, Osteen, Osborne, Owen, Pickelsimer, Phillips, Patton, Paxton, Patterson, Parker, Powell, Pridmore, Raxter, Reese, Sentelle, Siniard, Shipman, Sitton, Smith, Shuford, Summey, Swayingame (and variations), Trammell, Thomas, Tinsley, Underwood, Waters, Woodfin, Wetzel, Whitmire, Wilson, Wood, Young, and many, many others. Sorry we left out anyone! Too many to remember them all! Good evening, I have been reading some of your mail over the internet. May I ask what kind of book or census do you have of Gilmer Co., Ga. I am hunting some GADDIS that should have been in the Ellijay area, I know in 1863. my husband 's grandfather was born maybe in Lumpkin Co., around that time and moved into Gilmer Co. We can not find any thing on them so it is very hard to tell. Any help will be appreciated. William L. Gaddis born 1863 or 64, <<We have found on one census they had Wm. A. Gaddis >> he also had a sister Eve or Evline Gaddis that married a William Wesley Dockery, and lived in Ellijay and died there. When her husband died she married a Letterman. But when she died they buried her by Wm. W. Dockery. Any help would be appreciated, we live in Alabama so it is so hard for us to come and try to find things. Thanks and have a very good week end. psueg@bellsouth.net Peggy Sue O'Shields-Gaddis ----- Original Message ----- From: "patnj" <patnj@gateway.net> To: <GAGILMER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, November 22, 2000 7:17 PM Subject: [GAGILMER-L] Ross family > Lois, > > Here's some more: > Book 1 > page 61 > > PAGGET, Perry M./Cyntha M. Lois, Here's some more: Book 1 page 61 PAGGET, Perry M./Cyntha M. Ross...1-16-1851, Henry Pettit, JIC Book 4 page 312 COLLIS, Steven M./Francis M. Ross...8-25-1860, Elijah Russell, JP Book 2 page 138 COMPTON, Norris/Diecy C. Also, for Artimincy Adaline Ross Teague, you need to have someone go to the courthouse in Ellijay and look for her under "Widows Support" and see if she put in a claim after her husband/s died. The state of GA still has this for the widows. (I found an approximate death date for one of my husband's grandfathers this way). And don't forget to look up the Civil War records, and look in TN, Cleveland, Bradley County.. they were Union regiments there, my husband's grandfather left the CSA and we found him up there! ........................Pat/NJ
