    3. If we end up doing the surfing thing, I'd like to volunteer to be a "Surfer." Not 'cause I want to pick apart the sites, but because it seems like fun to see what others are doing with their pages! Whether or not there is a "County of the Month" chosen, it might be fun to "spotlight" some of the great things that CCs have done. 3. Sorry it appeared like I disappeared, but hit the feathers early and then had a DAR meeting tonight, so am just checking email and off again for the night. Sounds like we have quite a few interested here in surfin' Georgia. So what do we do next? I guess I am asking Tim and the RC's, what the procedure would be????? Do we send something formal to you, asking for permission to start this project? I am willing, to help in the set-up, so *if* we can get started, and we have a few volunteers here, including, I hope, those graphic makers, once we get the go ahead - well........... Personally, I am graphic challenged, but, can help with the other things. <g> So I shall wait for a response from our management team and if we get the okay - let's go for it! We can have fun, maybe win an award and check sites for compliance all at the same time. So what do you say? 3. Jan/RC list: We are Rc and SC challenged at the moment- Richard is out until at least Sunday night, Virginia is out until?; Tim is out of pocket as well. I am however assigning this a Action Item Number 03272003-1 (my new thing to keep up with requests that are presented to us so they do not fall through the crack), and will put it back on the list with the action number assigned. There are a couple of issues so before you go aw that wet blanket, let me say "getting data on these sites" needs to be accomplished, and this might generate some of that, & Jan I think you would be terrific at heading this up .... and fyi I usually see the glass half full, but in this case a couple of issues with this that I think I have to bring up as Tim is not around to do so. 1) This would necessitate a change to the current guidelines which we can not make changes to until the coo is settled, we have several items that are on the table as well. 2) Personally I think if we don't ask for a vote of the cc's and see how many want this, we will be asking for more trouble, either that or make it clear that there can be a list of those that do not wish to participate and they will not be bothered. The last time it caused hard feelings and the last person I remember winning it was Scott Dingler over in ~gapolk and at that time he was "out front technology wise", he was the only one at that time among us that knew how to use frames and he had great content and a well laid out site, he was then criticized due to his "techno savviness that he should not have won, that frames were wrong, people couldn't access it with frames, all kinds of wild statements. 3) I fear if this were not to be "managed" it would turn into a picking party. 7 have been having a picking party as of late and one volunteered. Also, another main concern, when it was David Morgan's birthday I received an email asking a bunch of us to go vote for David's site out there. So I did not think that system was very fair. There are other items to take into consideration - the size of GA versus TX being one of them, the multiple co owners. 1_ alot of Counties in Ga had their courthouses burned (one co has burned 5 x's), therefore it is much harder for those counties to transcribe information that IS NOT available. 2_ Some of the newer counties will not have much data because their entrance date was early 1900's or like Peach the first available census being 1930. 3_ Bells and Whistles -- some people have to rely on graphics that are available online for free, not something they create; what about frames are they going to immediately be disqualified because someone does not like frames; Those are some of the questions I would ask out of fairness to the cc's. Again, not trying to be a wet blanket, I just don't have stars in my eyes. 3. Sorry I hit the wrong list, that was intended for the RC list, but now you know my concerns which I was not going to voice here or on galina but rather to the RCs and to Jan.

So I > did not think that system was very fair. JAN: I don't want this to be a picking party. I want it to be fun. I realize that some of us, and me in particular are html and graphics challenged. So, I don't want it to be just site design, but rather add into it content and improvement. In the real world, the same site should not always win. So, I would want to look for many things and have a team to make the decision as we do in TX. We let outside forces vote as well, but that *should not* be the deciding factor, as you say a group could write in and that is not fair. Other things need to be considered. I believe in being fair, first and foremost.] > > There are other items to take into consideration - the size of GA versus TX > being one of them, the multiple co owners. > 1_ alot of Counties in Ga had their courthouses burned (one co has burned 5 > x's), therefore it is much harder for those counties to transcribe > information that IS NOT available. JAN: I agree with you there, as I will always have a problem not living in GA. But, I would like to see things onsite that give a researcher where to go, lookups people, the ability to lead researchers to the right area. It's not all content.] > 2_ Some of the newer counties will not have much data because their > entrance date was early 1900's or like Peach the first available census > being 1930. I have to depend on available graphics I find. I do not believe that a person should be disqualified because someone does not like the way they do their site. It's more the info thats available. You can do a good site by giving people all the available info. Our job also is not to do the genealogy for them, but give them the information to do it for themselves as well.] > > Those are some of the questions I would ask out of fairness to the cc's. > > Again, not trying to be a wet blanket, I just don't have stars in my eyes. JAN: I don't have any stars either. I live in the real world as well. It's not perfect, but the best that we have. Nothing is a panacea, we make what we can of it. I would chat with Dana Thomas in TXGenWeb next. I believe she was the one that helped to get this started in Texas. At any rate, she was the last leader/chair of our group. Then of course we would beed volunteers. That would really help a lot lol!! Maybe someone else has some other ideas???? Bettie <>< -- Never take away anyone's hope.
