Dear Isaiah, It really is much simplier to link to the archive pages anyway. Tim/Isaah, I totally disagree, when was the policy changed, by who, and was it put to a vote of USGENWEB members? I submit evidence below that from the very beginning of the archives material has been allowed to be used by everyone not just the archives. I have checked the records of different states and just grabbed some of the notices. When did it change from "Copying of the files within by non-commercial individuals and libraries is encouraged" to you cannot even use it within our own organization? My County pages are part of the USGENWEB project and is not an outside project. So I am entitled to use the material on my pages. The USGENWEB NOTICE states that ANYONE can use the material as long as the USGENWEB NOTICE remains on the pages. As far as I know there have been no changes to Article II. Purpose. When did the archives become the foundation of the USGENWEB project. Aticle II clearly states In presenting this information, the foundation of the organization shall be at the local websites (county, township, parish, town, etc.) The archives should be sending this information to the county pages to have it placed there if they are abiding by the Bylaws on this matter. ARTICLE II. PURPOSE Section 1. The USGenWeb Project is an organized group of volunteers working to create an online center for genealogical research by linking every county in the United States. The purpose of this organization shall be to gather genealogical and historical information for free online access by researchers Section 2. This purpose shall be accomplished by presenting websites which shall be central repositories of historical and genealogical research data, donated either by the website coordinator or other contributors. In presenting this information, the foundation of the organization shall be at the local websites (county, township, parish, town, etc.) which shall be linked to the state websites which shall be linked to the national website. The USGenWeb Project shall also provide a "digital library" called The USGenWeb Project Archives. If the Archives are now deemed the Central Repository for records then it should be voted on and all CC's should have a vote to say if the archives will be the Central Repository for their county records and not someone at the archives that has decided this. I have searched through all I can find on the subject at the National USGENWEB site and there are no Bylaws that state I cannout place the material on my County site. I trust you will furnish me with the articles that were amended to change the USGENWEB NOTICE for the archives that dictates that the records in the archives cannot be used by anyone other than the archives. One final statement I am NOT any OTHER Organization I am part of the USGENWEB project unless you have now deeded that the Counties are no longer a part of the USGENWEB project. (CAPS used for emphasis) I would think that a policy change would require AB approval and then a vote by the whole of the USGENWEB. Respectfully, Margie Daniels See the Archives notices below. I did not continue to check all 52 states but this will give you a good sample of the others. ____________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________ ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ct/ctstate/biog/biog001a.txt USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free information on the Internet, data may be used by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material. Margie, Instead of spending so much time "grabbing" files, would it not be a lot less time consuming and easier to just add a link to the County Archives Table of Contents on your page and spend all of that time transcribing some records from your county that aren't already in the archives or on your pages? You could even transcribe records that have already been transcribed for the archives if you want them on your county pages. We could then all get back to the business of maintaining our county sites, keeping them in compliance with the guidelines and transcribing records.
