Gloria, I would like to address a couple of issues you point out in this note to Wyndell. Apparently you have had some grievance with someone who works with the GAGenWeb Archives Project but please don't lump everyone into the same mold. You said - >The Archives and the GAGenWeb Project both >have a place but having a movement going on all the time against the CCs who >have material on their pages has to stop. I have not been here forever and I apparently have missed the "movement" against CC's who have material on their pages. I have never been approached by anyone about moving material from my sites to the archives or not placing material on my sites. Since I have "woken up" and started paying more attention to the controversies within GAGenWeb, I have seen more controversy from CC's, etc.. against the archives instead of the other way around. You said - >And when an Archivist has a County >site they are keeping someone from working that site...as with what they do >they don't have time to devote to the site and they don't have any >intentions of placing anything there on that site. I beg to differ with you here. I have gone and looked at all county sites in Georgia in the last couple of months and I have not found it to be a "rule" that if a person is also an "archivist" that they don't have anything on their county sites. There are alot of counties in Georgia that don't have anything on their sites, but they aren't CC'd by archives people. I would ask that you please go look at my Fayette county site and at the archives TOC's, which, by the way are all linked from my front page but you will find that there is alot of content in both places and the majority of it has been done by me because I took over a long neglected county site and there have not been alot of Fayette researchers stepping up to donate materials to the county site or the archives until recently. I "work my site" rather frequently, there are only around 50 pages that are actually part of the county site now and I do intend to add more. What we do for the archives is actually not that time consuming and is becoming less so because of our new submittal forms. The only "time consuming" things I do for the archives is when I am actually transcribing records and I transcribe records for both projects. I hope you will take the time to look at my whole website @ http://www.rootsweb.com/~gafayett/index.html and then you will see that your statement above concerning my intentions is not accurate. The same for others when they are on the wrong track. But thank you for defending CCs rights to have material on the county pages. And as you say if we don't place material there why have a county site. Give it to someone who will place material at the county level and become a transcriber/abstractor for the Archives project full time. There are a lot of people out here who will take a county site and turn it around. The Archives and the GAGenWeb Project both have a place but having a movement going on all the time against the CCs who have material on their pages has to stop. And when an Archivist has a County site they are keeping someone from working that site...as with what they do they don't have time to devote to the site and they don't have any intentions of placing anything there on that site. Let the visitors have more rather than less...When I first came out here on the WWW years ago there were so many sites and all they had was a lot of links to links and to more links..when I go to a page I want to find more than links I want to have material there without jumping to another site. That is just my way of looking at things. I do not belong to the GA Archives project I belong to the GAGenWeb Project..and that too is how I see it. In the event of my demise there are members of my own family who live in the counties which I host who will take them over...as by that time they will be retired too. So I am not afraid of placing material at the county level. The only time that I was is when there was talk about anything there being the property of the GAGenWeb Project. My husband is also the Co Host and is there to keep those websites going and would do just that as long as he was around this old world. So no one has to be afraid that Ben Hill or Irwin counties are going anywhere...and the pages of records will continue to grow. There were some unforseen major changes in my life within the last few years including my fathers illness and then his death and a major move to another city. That kept me busy but I am not now and I am back working to build the pages beyond what they are. I don't care if anyone wants to place material in the archives...at some point I most likely will also but I do not want an empty shell of a website for people to visit. That is not the goal of the GAGenWeb County Coordinators and SC when the project was young. And hopefully it will not go in that direction but there are signs of it going in that direction by all the attacks from the Archivist against CCs over the last few years......Gloria ----- Original Message ----- From: "Wyndell Taylor" <gagenie@bellsouth.net> To: <GAGEN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, April 09, 2003 1:04 PM Subject: Re: [GAGEN] Ok, now I am mad > At 11:46 AM 4/9/03 -0400, you wrote: > >provided other material which meets the county requirements...That is what I > >am saying....but there are those of us who plan to keep the material at the > >county website and do not intend to change from that. > > Not sure where and why the difficulties developed between the county sites > and the archives, but I think they both have a place in this project. > > I developed a lot of data for Cherokee County while I was the cc there.
