Personally I have to agree with Margie here. Perhaps this statement made by Linda, was in jest, or not meant the way it was implied, but really uncalled for. I am a file manager and I personally think that we have to respect the CC's and their opinions. Some like the Archives, some do not. Okay - so be it. None of us see eye to eye. I would rather have a good working relationship with the CC's in my state than compete for better stats. MI is in 13th place and at one time we were near the top. So, guess we are sliding, but, we don't have any infighting over the Archives. I recently took on a very large project of adding marriages to the Archives, which are on most of the county pages. Some of the CC's like to update them on a monthly basis and some do not. For the some that do not, the Archives is perfect. The arrangement is that the people who donated will also give them to the CC's - so if they want to post, that's okay, but if they don't, then all they have to do is add a link to the Archives marriage pages and their work is over. I would rather see this than to not have the information available at all. It's a good working relationship built on respect. So I guess my bottom line here is the statement that Linda made was IMO a little less than respectful. Each and everything should start with respect and maintain that status quo. I agree with both Margie and Jan that the remarks were out of line. And there should be an apology. Had Linda or Virginian paid attention to what some of their Coordinators were doing in pressuring contributors as well as the County Coordinators there might not be the problems that exist now. The Archives was before and is now a secondary project to the County WebPages. We all need to get busy and post some no frills pages on our sites for those who want just white backgrounds and black ink. They say it is easier to print copies of the material when it is in the Archives. And must more difficult to copy when it is on a county page which has a colored background. Sounds as if a lot of printing of records is going on. Not that I mind but wonder if anyone else does. So do we make it easier for folks to print out the records or do we leave the material on pages with backgrounds which discourage those who want to copy the records? Just some thoughts to pass along. Gloria, It doesn't matter about the information being on a html page with a background and/or colored fonts. One can print the information just as easy as from an archives page from a county site. There is really nothing one can do to control what is printed or not printed off of the web. Linda they can print html just as easy as .txt but most printers do take longer to print color and the color ink is more expensive for most printers so they will prefer not to print. If they are adept at printing they can set the printer to print black and white but many do not know how to do this. As for controlling what is printed or not printed off the web also keep in mind that even if it's a book that is copyrighted, the average user can legally print/copy up to 20% of that book provided it's for their own personal use. Thank goodness this is true as I'm one of those who loves to print/copy information when I find something on my family lines. Whether I go into a library and find my family history in a local (copyrighted) history book or find something related to my family on a web page, I have the right to copy it for my own personal use and I'm not violating copyright as long as I am not publishing it elsewhere. Better yet just add books to your sites that are public domain and miss and the copyright mess. Fortunately Georgia is old enough to have many books available prior to 1900 which falls into public domain territory. More on this later. Tim
