    3. Liz, The USGenWeb Bylaws that we are currently operating under have this to say - ARTICLE XI. LOCAL PROJECTS Section 4. If a Local Coordinator can no longer perform their duties for any reason, those sections of the website submitted or donated by contributors other than the website coordinator, shall remain with the website, unless the submitter(s)/contributor(s) indicates otherwise. There hasn't been a consistent effort to enforce this across the country - but in the case of one county which left USGenWeb Project this year and took all user contributed data with it, I have been going into archive.org's record of the site, writing to the contributors and asking permission for their data to go back on the GAGenWeb site and then sending that info to the new CC of the county. It is time consuming but takes less time than someone having to transcribe the information again. I have not had anyone tell me no. I've found that most people don't realize their contributions to GAGenWeb are not a part of the project any longer. The one problem you run into is on sites where the coordinators did not give credit to the donator of the information to begin with - it's hard to know who contributed what but I have had success by looking at older pages on archive.org until I dig the contributors name out. I have completed this process on one county and am working on a couple of others when I have time. It's not the perfect way to do it but it is working albeit slow! Linda Blum-Barton -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Thursday, January 20, 2005 9:24 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [GAGEN] County Sites I would like to address Deborah's last sentence of her recent mail to the list regarding the removal of information from a county site. "When I give up my counties I fully intend that all of their content goes with the counties. Deborah Byrd" I have received both a county complete with all information (Monroe) and one where the information had been moved to another project by the former coordinator (Carroll). I have never felt that I 'owned' the information left in my care on the Monroe pages and that when the pages are passed on to another coordinator, all files will be included. Even should I become dissatisfied with the GAGenWeb Project and decided to resign, those files contributed by others would remain intact. I do not think a coordinator should have the ability to rob a site of all content, especially that contributed by others. In one of my cases, the former coordinator had transcribed no records and had no records of her own on the county page yet all information was removed. When and if I leave the GAGenWeb Project, I too would want the content to go with the county page. Now so much for that; the new coordinator takes over and decides to move the information to another web site and we have no control over it being moved. Is there any way we can control what happens to the pages? Is this covered in the guidelines?
