Ed, I really read with interest the information you provided about Ancestry.com. I doubt seriously that putting that note from Sylvia will do too much good. From what I was reading on that link you provided you can get a snapshot of the page without even going to the website!!! While they may have decided to make it free now that means they still do not have to go to my site and see all the work and information that has gone into it. Plus the website in Peach will soon have the footer on every page that says it is copyrighted and they have no legal reason to justify using copyrighted material. I am not talking about the information on my site, I am talking about all the design work and effort to get that menu fully implemented. That's what really concerns me and if they view a portion of the page they may not even see the copyright notice or even the menu, because I am using incHeader.htm and incFooter.htm while they can pull up a page without either of those items showing (I think??) I may investigate Ancestry to see what shows up for Peach in their new database. Joe
It doesn't seem like GA got hit as much as other areas. Some archive stuff is there, but not a lot. Nothing from my site that I can tell is there. If you don't read any of the other USGENWEB lists, there is a lot going on all across the internet, not just us. Some people have taken down their sites, put disclaimers, etc. For now, I will wait and see what happens. Or until something from my site shows up and I go ballistic LOL At least they have backed off of it being part of a subscription, but you still have to register, so they get your info anyway. One thing I found out. There is no filter on the search at all. Search for all the porno you want, it shows up. Sandy, I am pretty sure my stuff is up there. My county was not formed until 1924 so I wasn't seeing but a few hints a week. Over the last two weeks I have been getting a lot more hits for some reason and most view one page and never come back. I'm already going ballistic. what did you click on or go to to find out your pages were not up there???? JOE Sandy Smith wrote: > It doesn't seem like GA got hit as much as other areas. Most of the hits for GA are from the Political Graveyard site. They list our county pages on them that link to our sites. To search for the USGENWEB stuff on there, you type USGENWEB in the keyword block with nothing else and it lists every page taken from there, most of it is archive stuff. There's so much of it though, I can't check all of it. If you know exact names of the submitter of a file in Peach County, try searching for it that way. For example I search for Virginia Crilley as the name with USGENWEB as the keyword. Since she is our archives person it shows every file that they have spidered so far with her name on it. Hi, Joe and everyone, My thinking behind suggesting a disclaimer was twofold: to make doubly sure researchers know the source of the Web pages they find and to reinforce the fact that they don't have to pay for data they can get for free at USGenWeb. Obviously, this idea originated while Ancestry was still charging to view our pages. All the disclaimers and copyright notices in the world will not stop some people from unethical practices. What we can do is continue to get our message of free genealogy out there. We can turn every "hit" via some other site into a little free advertising for us. Thanks to all of you for the good work you do. Vivian At 10:06 PM 8/28/2007, you wrote: >Ed, > >I really read with interest the information you provided about >Ancestry.com. I agree with Vivian we need to make sure people know they don't have to pay to view all we do. Last I heard Ancestry was getting bombed with email about this problem. For the Record Thank You for Posting it. It may not do any good but it will not hurt. I was always taught its better to do something rather than nothing.
