Please feel free to forward to appropriate Project lists. Tina ----- Original Message ----- From: Tina S. Vickery To: board@rootsweb.com Sent: Tuesday, September 04, 2007 8:11 AM Subject: Statement on discussion/negotiations - Masthead for USGenWeb Rootweb hosted sites. As some of you may know, I attended the FGS conference in Fort Wayne, IN in mid-August where the USGenWeb Project hosted a booth. While there, I had the pleasure of meeting Sean Lloyd [again], Associate Community Development Manager for rootsweb.com and Donna Popelish, RootsWeb Help desk Manager. It was a pleasure to finally meet Donna, who is long overdue a huge THANK YOU from the USGenWeb Project for her care and responsiveness to the Project. She is one of our unsung heroes for her service! After the election, but prior to September 1, I received an email from Sean, requesting a teleconference with David Graham, RootsWeb Product Manager; Anna Fechter, Community Operations Manager The Generations Network; and Sean. While I agreed to the teleconfernce, I reiterated to them, that I was not National Coordinator yet. But I did agree to listen. And listen I did. Rootsweb and The Generation Network are very eager to work with us, (the Board and the Project membership), to facilitate a design for our masthead that distinctly displays our mission and goals while at the same time addresses their business concerns and decisions. I have no reason to believe that this negotiation will not be done in good faith, as both parties are eager to enter into a mutually acceptable agreement. The conclusion of our conversation was that they would prepare and forward to me a proposal for presentation to the Advisory Board and the Project. I will keep you all abreast of the discussions as they progress. 3. I wonder if it wouldn't be better at the top of each page. If someone is looking for particular information on a site they might not get to the bottom of the page but they would see it at the top. Just create an incHeader.htm like the incFooter.htm and include it right after <BODY>. The page will load at the top and they can't miss it. They may put them back up in the future I don't know. But as long as folks can see that we provide free records is the main thing. 3. Some have asked me how to get to the site, so I wanted to clarify that this is the GAGENWeb Peach County Site. The address is http://www.rootsweb.com/~gapeach/index.shtml <http://www.rootsweb.com/%7Egapeach/index.shtml>. The site is an example of Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). It also uses Dynamic HTML in the form of a javascript menu. You can go from any page on the site to any other page without going back to the HOME page. It is not that difficult to program and was done using all free software to develop the website. I would be willing to help anyone setting up their site in a similar manner. Sylvia has mentioned to me about the possibility of doing a program on CSS development in Macon (Hope she was serious about that since it would be a good idea) and this could be included in that since I live in Macon. Your messages and concerns were heard and received. Scott Burow NC - USGenWeb ----- Original Message ----- From: Anna Fechter To: sburow@swbell.net Sent: Wednesday, August 29, 2007 5:24 PM Subject: Update on Ancestry's Internet Biographical Collection Scott, I wanted to make sure that you were kept up to date with the latest developments. We have decided to remove the collection from our site. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me. "Earlier this week we launched the Internet Biographical Collection on Ancestry.com. Our goal was to offer members a search engine that focused primarily on genealogy resources. We intended this collection to help surface family history information that many people would not be able to find easily because it is often scattered among numerous websites across the Internet. We cached individual Web pages in an effort to preserve history - if a Web page featuring important family history information were taken down in the future, a cached version would still be available. Many people have expressed concerns about the collection and the search engine we created on Ancestry.com. We recognize the significant time and resources members of the genealogical community invest to make their family history research available online. Over the past few days we have reevaluated this collection's goals, caching and crawling ability, and user experience. We have decided to remove this collection and search engine from Ancestry.com for the time being. We are still dedicated to providing family historians the online tools and aggregated records that make it easier to trace their family tree and will work to develop a solution that meets those needs in a way that will be most beneficial to our customers and the community." Thank you for your continued support of RootsWeb. 3. I agree with Vivian we need to make sure people know they don't have to pay to view all we do. Last I heard Ancestry was getting bombed with email about this problem. Obviously, this idea originated while Ancestry was still charging to view our pages. All the disclaimers and copyright notices in the world will not stop some people from unethical practices. What we can do is continue to get our message of free genealogy out there. We can turn every "hit" via some other site into a little free advertising for us. Thanks to all of you for the good work you do. Vivian At 10:06 PM 8/28/2007, you wrote: >Ed, > >I really read with interest the information you provided about >Ancestry.com. 3. Thanks Ed -Marc -- "Ed Gordon" <edeye1@hotmail.com> wrote: Hey Yall, You may want to read the email below that came across the State Coord list. Vivian came up with a disclaimer that we all may want to add to our pages. "If you have arrived at this site via a paid subscription database, please know that the data contained here has been donated by hardworking volunteers. This material and much more is available free of charge through the USGenWeb Project and its state and county Web sites." Thanks Vivian!! She and I have been discussing this problem and we are not sure that the above disclaimer would show up on any pages they already have?? There is no need to panic. The NC is working on resolving this matter asap. So we need to think carefully about our options. When you click on the original pages, you sometimes get the USGenWeb copyright notice . . ." Source Information: "Ancestry.com. Internet Biographical Collection [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: The Generations Network, Inc., 2007. Original data: Biographical info taken from various English web sites. See specific website address provided with each entry. About Internet Biographical Collection This database contains a sampling of biographical sketches found on English language web pages throughout the entire World Wide Web. Web pages can vary greatly in the amount of information they contain about a given person, and in the number of related and unrelated people mentioned on the same page. The information source and the central topic of each page will also vary greatly. For more information about this database, click here. 3. Most of the hits for GA are from the Political Graveyard site. They list our county pages on them that link to our sites. To search for the USGENWEB stuff on there, you type USGENWEB in the keyword block with nothing else and it lists every page taken from there, most of it is archive stuff. There's so much of it though, I can't check all of it. If you know exact names of the submitter of a file in Peach County, try searching for it that way. For example I search for Virginia Crilley as the name with USGENWEB as the keyword. Since she is our archives person it shows every file that they have spidered so far with her name on it.
