The biggest complaint, after stagnant webpages with no content (and I don't hear that about Georgia! <G>) is lots of graphics and music "getting in the way" The majority of people I speak to would like the entire USGenWeb to have a consistent "look and feel" even though most realize why this is not possible. Quite apart from personal preferences, aren't there copyright problems with using music on webpages? Perhaps I should go back to lurking ;) Claire claire@genealogy-quest.com

If the computer is ancient and the connection speed is very low - computers can freeze up. And while not everyone has DNS or cable connection - most have 56K now - and if not - the person is accustomed to being booted off or having their computer freeze. It is not only the music scripts that may cause problems - also Java scripts and some HTML. Flash doesn't - that why it is far superior to anything else out there. There is a great engine that one can test her pages - <A HREF="http://www.netmechanic.com/">HTML code help, search engine optimization and web site maintenance tools by NetMechanic.</A> Not only will it tell you if you have HTML errors - it will also tell you what systems (if any) will have problems with your pages. This is a free service and worth the time and effort to test pages. Especially the front page of our sites. "They say" (I want to know who they are:) if the front page takes longer than 12 seconds to load - most people will move on before the page loads - by clicking back or closing the window. This will tell you how fast your pages load according to connection speeds. I don't like music on webpages - maybe because I have an older computer BUT quote "Beyond these few "bare essentials", your page is yours to do with as you please. "http://www.usgenweb.org/volunteers/countypage.html Donna Parrish, Forsyth County
1 - require visitors to download the music file along with the page - use realplayer or crescendo - and stream the music 2 - prevent visitors from turning it off at their option - turn your speakers off 3 - conflict with other music that people may be playing via broadband connections - variety is goo 4 - wake up the entire family because it is a complete surprise - turn your speakers off 5 - force visitors to download specific software to play it - click no when asked I have music on many of my pages on my personal website and constantly get emails telling me how much it is enjoyed - and asking questions as to what CDs the songs are from, etc. I am (finally) learning flash - you can put movie scripts on your page to only play music - it is estimated 97% of all Internet users have installed Flash - so the music will play automatically without any glitches and/or streaming. The format they have come up with for the files (.SwF extension) holds the music/movie/etc but condenses it to such a small file - it is truly unbelievable! What I personally hate is midis - I feel like I am in an elevator that is stuck in purgatory. So are you saying that it might not only be html, music, etc. but it could be the interent or our browsers that cause the freezes? Is there anyway to tell specifically what's causing a problem? Bettie <><
I don't know who "they" are either, but I am one of them that if the page is taking to long I will move on, unless I have a specific reason that I have to be at that site. In the business world that is fairly critical as you do not want to lose customers!!! I have a 56k dial up, and I don't like any bells & whistles that cause pages to slow down. "Intros" that are flash usually get the skip button clicked on. Now of course those with hi speed connections don't have as much of a problem, but there are a lot of us dial up old cronies still out there too. If you use the large download bells & whistles on your pages, then at least give us a way of skipping around it. And yes, bad code, whether html or something else can easily freeze or lock up a computer. Sometimes I use Netscape to view mail at iwon.com, and some html email's will freeze me up solid!!! I have a Dell 400 with plenty of memory. Not too old, but not new either. Always keep in mind how the internet and browsers work.... the page, and *everything* on it, is downloaded to your hard drive and then displayed in IE or Netscape or whatever you use from your hard drive. Thanks for the netmechanic!!! Thanks jimmy.... wearing a cc and visitors hat!!! TooFem@aol.com wrote: > If the computer is ancient and the connection speed is very low - computers > can freeze up. I have been visiting many GA county pages again today. Have come across something that is extremely irritating: music being automatically downloaded with a page with NO WAY TO TURN IT OFF !!! It's as bad as popup advertising, which I think we all will agree is a nightmare..right? Adding music to any web page is a creative design element which should be left up to the creator of the page...but there are ways to add music that DOES NOT: 1 - require visitors to download the music file along with the page 2 - prevent visitors from turning it off at their option 3 - conflict with other music that people may be playing via broadband connections 4 - wake up the entire family because it is a complete surprise 5 - force visitors to download specific software to play it Please, please consider other methods to include music on your web pages. Here's one way that is the best compromise I've found over the years that also keeps our pages up to snuff with all the latest music technology with little maintenance on our part: http://www.ancestraldesigns.com/designtips/pizzazz.html#music THANKS for listening, C.A.T.
> Adding music to any web page is a creative design element which should be > left up to the creator of the page...but there are ways to add music that > DOES NOT: I have heard that music will freeze or shut down a lot of computers, espceially the older ones. It never has "frozen" my computers, but I wondered if this really does happen??? Anyone know? If this does happen will being able to turn the music off help prevent this or will they still freeze anyway? I finally got back on line this PM. My ISP 'forgot' to renew their trust certificate and thus got disconnected from the rest of the Internet. They got that fixed sometime today (Monday). So now I've another back log of mail. In an effort to restore this list as a business list only - where announcements are made, items that effect everyone and the like, I've been asked by several CCs to acquire, start, a chat list. We already have such but it is highly under-utilized. There are folks there that I don't know from Adam's house cat and they can remain if they can stand the chat. This list will be voluntary only - it is not required. So go there and chat your faces off! For new subscribers there it will be limited to GAGenWeb Project members. If you got the following message today - then you are already on the list: There are 60 subscribers to GALINA-L and 16 subscribers to GALINA-D. If you did not - then you can sub to this list - as you wish to - for it will be the chat list - so that several of the items recently posted to this list will fit better there instead of here. To sub - the standard way you sub to any Rootsweb list: galina-l@rootsweb.com - list mode galina-d@rootsweb.com - digest mode More items as I dig through my mail backlog. Tim

I've a lot on my mind as March has already been a bear. One of my best contributors died March 1st after a short hospital stay. A lady I'd visited with in IRC from OKGenWeb passed on March 2 as did the mother of one of our SCs. Here's hoping the remainder of March is better for us all. FWIW, when changes are made, an announcement will be made on this list - perhaps not that very minute but within a day, if at all possible. For those of you who were gone, I'll next re-post an announcement made during your absense. Tim

Tim, I just noted the revision to the Treutlen County website that occurred during the afternoon. So, Bob Fender is currently managing the site as it is up for adoption. Should it not be shown on the TOC as up for adoption instead of under construction so that someone might volunteer for it? Also, it states that you are the Interim Regional Coordinator for the East Central Region, is this correct? Thanks, Linda Blum-Barton All outgoing email and attachments are scanned by Norton AntiVirus 2002!

Dear List, I do not believe all of this is necessary, we have either been raised with manners or we haven't. I don't need "Miss Manners" to point out rude to me. The fact is that the Treutlin County Website says that Bob Fender is the RC for East Central Region. Donna welcomed him, stated she must have missed it on the mailing list and asked if he was the same as or kin to Robert Fender who has Floyd and Whitfield counties. If we can't believe what we read on the pages of GAGENWEB, exactly where are we to get our information from? We are, after all, charged with compiling information for researchers of genealogy, which while not an exact science should be as ACCURATE as possible or we are doing a disservice to those researchers. I don't believe this accuracy should end with the actual genealogical data and records but should carry through the whole project as that is the "introduction" to the data and records. I believe Tim could have responded to Donna's welcome message with "the facts" instead of "Surely you don't believe everything you read?". After all, we have been informed that the East Central Region no longer has a Regional Coordinator since Laura Schmidt resigned on 16 Feb 2003, but this page http://www.rootsweb.com/~gagenweb/regional.html, which is our information page for Regions in Georgia states that she is still the Regional Coordinator instead of saying there isn't one at the moment or that the position is open for volunteers. So, why was it such a big jump to believe that what was posted on the Treutlen County site was true and that she had just missed the notice to the list? MAIN POINTS: 1) The etiquette rule is that you do not respond to rudeness with more rudeness; it doesn't solve the problem. So you treat him with the proper reaction to rudeness, which is not to [act as if] everything is fine. You get rather stiffly polite, and you steer somewhat clear of that person until he realizes he's done something awfully wrong. 2) There are plenty of people who say, ``We don't care about etiquette, but we can't stand the way so-and-so behaves, and we don't want him around!'' Etiquette doesn't have the great sanctions that the law has. BUT THE MAIN SANCTION WE DO HAVE is in not dealing with these people and isolating them because their behavior is unbearable. ... more Miss Manners in full .... Miss Manners has commented extensively on how to behave correctly in almost every situation in American life. So why not in cyberspace? ....... Here's what she had to say: Because E-mail can go essentially from the writer's brain to the recipient's screen, people often press the ``send'' button on messages they probably wouldn't put in the mail. So here's the situation: A colleague sends me E-mail saying that he doesn't like some work I've done, and he says some rather nasty things. Of course, my immediate response is to want to flame right back at him. Is that a good response? Miss Manners: The etiquette rule is that you do not respond to rudeness with more rudeness; it doesn't solve the problem. So you treat him with the proper reaction to rudeness, which is not to [act as if] everything is fine. You get rather stiffly polite, and you steer somewhat clear of that person until he realizes he's done something awfully wrong. Miss Manners: The response is the same as it is in society: You can deny all you want that there is etiquette, and a lot of people do in everyday life. But if you behave in a way that offends the people you're trying to deal with, they will stop dealing with you. And that can happen as easily in cyberspace as it happens every day in real life. There are plenty of people who say, ``We don't care about etiquette, but we can't stand the way so-and-so behaves, and we don't want him around!'' Etiquette doesn't have the great sanctions that the law has. But the main sanction we do have is in not dealing with these people and isolating them because their behavior is unbearable. [In cyberspace], people can easily avail themselves of the cloak of total anonymity, which of course creates a lot of etiquette problems. Because if you're rude under a code name and I can't see you, I don't know where you live, and I don't even know your real name, [then] you probably don't feel the sense of shame you would feel if you were rude to the same group of people but were in a room with them. http://www.computerworld.com/reprintthis/1995/0,4836,17542,00.html I requested a copy sent to this list.
