Most of them will continue to bury their heads in the sand. I believe it's called freedom of choice. Most of the folks who joined USGenWeb joined it for one reason only - to share materials with others. The draw was that all one had to do was maintain a site which had minimum requirements. They were then left to their own devices as to how to design and present the material they either had or that was/has/will be donated to them for inclusion on the site. Most didn't bargain for all the fighting and infighting over how best to present data on DEAD people. The dead certainly don't care nor do most living people. That many members choose not to vote, speak up or otherwise be involved, even though they are aware of what may be going on in other circles, goes to show that they just want to do their websites and not be bothered by turmoil. And for those who don't know - how many do you think would really care once they did know? Very few is my guess for people generally prefer calm over turmoil. In about 10 days there's going to a an election for SC in one state - as of last night there are no candidates. I'm a CC in that state - and the state list there was extremely quiet. But then most CCs there like that. We all just do our sites, once in a while talk to each other off list and go on about our business. The same is true in other states as well. Tim

I totally agree. I think we need to have regular elections if for no other reason than to feel that we have some control of our destiny. We might want to have the same SC for 20 years, but if we do not have an option, it is human nature to rebel. FWIW, I would vote for Tim, and I strongly suspect that with a very few exceptions, the CCs of all the other GA counties would also - but I would like to have an opportunity to vote - not a vote as to whether or not to remove Tim as SC, but a SC election with him as one of the candidates. I consider Tim a friend, and I do not consider this wish anti-Tim because I feel that the CCs in this state know he is the best person for the job and he would be re-elected - but I definitely want regularly scheduled elections every two years - always did, and still do. I think that this would be the best thing we could do for the future stability of GAGenWeb. Carol At 08:27 PM 4/12/2003, Derek Nichols wrote: > > Why are we having so many problems? Click here: RootsWeb: GAGEN-L Archives Out of curiosity, I visited our archives and then other States. (change the GA to the 2 letter abbreviation i.e. http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/CAGEN/) and am horrified by the differences! Most states I searched have very few messages and I have yet to find a board with complaints, attacks, etc etc etc - except ours. I am embarrassed by this. Why are we having so many problems? Every state organization is filled with different personalities, differing points of view, and so on. Why are we so unhappy? Perhaps some of these states have their list archives in other places than what I could find. Or could it be they are just doing their job and not being harassed? And now the executive board is showing us how little they care. Five people voted on our issue. Five out of eleven eligible voters. When an issue is put in front of them - one that we have asked help with - they should all vote. Period. The fact they ignored our request by ignoring the vote is pathetic. What leaders we have. While I know how I wish they would have voted - all I really wanted was for them to vote, not to sink into oblivion because something may be uncomfortable for them. I think they owed it to us to vote. We seem to have real problems here. While I don't know what the solution is, I hope the people who can do something - will. It is time for the powers who be to step up and put GAGen first. This isn't about egos or power - it is about helping researchers find free material on our sites. Our group isn't working well as it is now. Something has to change. Carol, How do we get this information to all the CCs of GA and to the other states? The ALL list has been gagged, and even when it was open how many CCs were subscribed to it? It appears the vast majority of the CCs throughout the USGenWeb Project do care about the national level and only care about the county(s) they are handling. There has been talk for a long time about having two newsletters, one for the researchers and another for the members. But has anything been done about getting the newsletters going. And even after the newsletters are a reality, how do we get all the members to subscribe to it. Most of them will continue to bury their heads in the sand. Excellent question, Connie - unfortunately I do not have an answer. All of the CCs in GA are on this list, aren't they? Why not discuss it here? So far as the CCs in other states - there does need to be a newsletter, IMHO. And there is the USGenWeb-Discuss list. That new -ALL list was talking about a newsletter at one point - what ever happened to that? One thing I do know - the county and SP pages are NOT the place to air USGenWeb politics. Connie, YES, we should all be aware of what is going on at the State and National levels of this project. BUT the researchers who use GAGenWeb are not part of this process.....they just happen to be the ones hurt most by all of it because their resources are suffering because of it. This link is on a page that is meant for Researchers, not GAGenWeb or USGenWeb business. The link has no place there. Connie - why do we maintain these counties? Do we do it for other CCs in the state? IF so, you could possibly have a point. BUT - if we do it for other genealogists, most of whom are not involved as GAGenWeb or USGenWeb volunteers - then why in the sam hill do we want to air our dirty laundry in their faces? They do not even know what the Board list is, or care - and smearing all of this in front of them is certainly not presenting the state or the national project in a positive light. And to have this done by a RC in GA - that has me totally amazed - to think that one of our "leaders" could stoop to something this gross blows me away.
