1. [GAGEN] Rootsweb Mail problem
2. jimmy
3. FYI... From RW... jimmy Many RootsWeb lists housed on the same server were affected by some unscheduled down-time caused by hardware problems....since March 26th. Mail is running again, but current messages will be posted first, and older messages will gradually be re-introduced into the queue so as not to overload the servers. This will probably create some confusion for the first couple of days, when you might see an answer before you see the original question. If you had posted a message / query which you haven't yet seen posted, give it a day or two, and if you don't see it, just post the message again. Expect to see mail chronologically out-of-order for a day or two, so if your in-box automatically "sorts by date" mail may jump _up_ in your in-box. Once the server problem was noticed, incoming mail was cached for later (deferred) delivery, but anything posted at the same time period when the server quit is probably lost. Rootsweb

1. [GAGEN] Val Greenwood's, The Researchers Guide to American Genealogy
2. John Holback
3. Quote: page 579 V. Objectivity in Family History The coll, detached presentation of facts may itself be biased because of its failure to be sensitive to important realities. James B. Allen made an excellent statement that illustrates the point: Genuine objectivity recognizes that truth can be distorted by a mere presentation of a multitude of facts. The documents you have, for example, may well reveal an embarrassing incident in an individuals life -- but does objectivity demand that you tell it? Was the incident such a minor variation in the persons total life that merely telling it gives undue emphasis to it, and leaves a misleading impression of his character? Will it really make any difference if some such stories are left out? Or, if your integrity demands that you deal with it, are you capable of putting it into words that will not distort the reader's view of your subject's over-all personality, or otherwise leave a wrong impression? If not, should you be writing this person's history at all? The biographers task then is complicated when it comes to keeping problems in their proper perspective as he deals with them.

3. The Military site would not be presented in the American Indian perspective unless the Indians were listed among those tribes who fought with the Caucasians in many wars and battles starting during the Colonial times. The Catawba of SC was very active in the Military as was the Cherokee and others. In those instances then that material should be with the Military material. That is how I see it and I see it as outlined in the quotation from Val Greenwood's book mentioned above. 3. Regardless of what you find, your first responsibility is to the truth. A true report, unaffected by the nature of the facts, is the responsibility of the genealogist as it is the responsibility of an historian or scientist. Those who attempt to alter, or color the truth are a liability to the science of genealogy - they are the millstone which tends to drag us down. They are not genealogists and do not deserve the title. In you dedication to the truth, however, remember that you also have a responsibility to present it objectively and in its proper perspective. This is from "Understanding Genealogical Research, by Val D. Greenwood, genealogical publishing Co., Inc. , Baltimore: 1990 This is the text book which the National Genealogical Society uses in their classes and what they recommend for anyone working towards completing their portfolio for certification as a C.G.R.S, or C G. If we are going to do something then lets do something that we can be proud of. Genealogy has rules just like any other science. We need to learn what that is and to follow those rules as closely as possible.

3. Actually for this link http://www.swggs.org/mcduffie.txt replace that with http://www.swggs.org/garecords.html which will give you a link to all georgia counties. However, I maintain that web site for the Southwest Georgia Genealogical Society and that is a list of books which are held in their Genealogical collection at the Dougherty County Public Library in Albany GA. But I would also like to make another note about libraries and societies here. Those books are listed there and as is the case with most libraries, if they are indexed or you have a page number of what you are looking for, most will mail you copies for the price of copies and postage. In this particular library the cost is .15 per page. They won't research but will check an index for specific names and mail copies. It's always best to send a written request with costs and SASE for these things but I have taken phone calls from patrons and let them know if the book contains what they wish, then mail the copy once I received the money and envelope. Southwest Georgia Genealogical Society P.O. Box 4672 Albany, Ga 31706 Library phone # 229-420-3218 One other note of interest about that library for those who may be close enough to visit is that they have over 40 internet computers and full access to Galileo which also gives full access to Ancestry.com paid databases. This is free, if you are using the internet from one of their computers. ----- Original Message ----- From: TooFem@aol.com To: GAGEN-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Friday, March 28, 2003 8:26 PM Subject: [GAGEN] Genealogy Books, etc These are great resources for us all! As soon as something is written, it is copyrighted. There is no need for actual publication. Say a poet jots down on a napkin a poem, as soon as it's put to the napkin, it is copyrighted. 3. I cant answer all of your problems but as far as doing Cemetery surveys I can NOT see how she could stop you!! AS long as you go in person and do them and not copy from HER precious "Holdings". As for the "plowed" over Cemetery I think I would contact the Sec of State and see if they could point me in the right Direction! I can NOT see why anyone would want to destroy a Cemetery. 3. Copyright implicitly implies publication. Without distribution there is no publication. It is a little like patent law which prevents you from holding part of a patent as a "trade secret". You can't do that or the patent is invalid. Patents require full disclosure of the methodology involved. Similarly if the information is not made available to the public whether it be free or for a charge there can be no copyright. If it once was available then became unavailable the situation would be different. But you can't write a book and hide it in the closet and claim copyright on it.
