It just takes up valuable space on the server. We are supposed to be one big happy family. This is not supposed to be a territorial issue. The info on the archives is for everyone and I am happy to provide links to it so that people can find the info they need. No it really isn't stupid to have material in more than one place. The Internet is all about redundancy. The more places material appears the better - for if one server is down or dies most likely another source is still up. Its a spreading out of the eggs instead of keeping them all together in one basket. Six years ago the argument of 'valuable space on the server' was valid but not anymore. Each year the cost of storing a megabyte of data has gone down which is most fortunate as the data has mushroomed. Tim

What they do say is that if x person leaves the project - certain items remain with the site/project - queries or other items contributed to the county site by folks other than the CC or items of public record - never the design of the site. Some folks leave and strip the site and the site has to be rebuilt - which is a sad affair - that's why we have the provision that one agrees that certain items remain with the site upon ones departure. What the guidelines provide for the project is a method of recovering the material taken by a CC who leaves in a huff taking things not rightly theirs as agreed to by them originally. Once a new CC is found to take on the site, they are to redesign the site to their personal preferences - within the guidelines few requirements. >(I argued and >voted against that particular bylaw). Please review the national bylaws - for in states without guidelines - that is a fact. That Georgia has made an effort at mandating other items puts it far ahead of most states. Are the Guidelines perfect - no. For they were created at the time - with input from the CCs of the time - to cover as many situations as we could forsee at that point in time. New situations develop - some rules worked, others haven't. So the Guidelines get polished some more. The reason items haven't been addressed as far as the Guidelines are concerned after February 4th was at the request of the National Coordinator that Georgia be frozen as it was. >Thus, the upcoming vote also addresses two questions: > >1. There's not much to govern - CCs are mostly selected by the RCs, the SC is mandated by the National Bylaws to maintain the state mailing list (GAGEN) and the state site - which is mostly a collection of links to the county sites plus a couple of Special Projects (African American and Native American), and some state history that I'm adding to the site. >As to voting, I take my citizenship in this project seriously. That is true - yet 60 - 80% of your fellow citizens opt not to vote in most elections around the country. While you may not take it as an option for yourself - the vast majority often does. As this is a free society folks have 4 options: they can opt to vote - yes, no or present or not vote. Tim

    1. [GAGEN] Family History News
    2. Brenda Pierce
    3. Thought I would share some of what Chuck and I did over the week-end. The Family History Center sponsored a Family History Expo at the Roswell, Georgia location that was open to the public for free and all the Historical Societies in Georgia and other Genealogical and Historical Organizations were asked to participate (free) with booths. This was a wonderful event, we met so many wonderful people and made so many contacts in this arena that we were very much pumped to work on some of the ideas that we gathered there. We were there on behalf of the Alpharetta Historical Society, and also had a booth for GaGenWeb. We placed brochures for both USGenWeb and GaGenWeb and several sheets of documentation in re to how to navigate and find information in this project. We also highlighted the Special Projects and some individual projects. I met some wonderful people from the National Archives, the State Archives, the History Center, software vendors, online genealogical and historical groups, one software and gen. group and I also met the Afrigeneious webmaster. All in all we had a wonderful day. The Alpharetta and Cobb County Historical Societies were the only "brick and mortar" societies that showed up for the event. If any of you are interested in participating in another one of these events, please zip me an email to ltlbit@springmail.com (don't reply to this email, direct it to the springmail addy), I will put you on the mailing list - Please include virtual email addy - virtual address for project you want the info for, and a Physical mailing address for hard copy mailings, along with a phone number for volunteers to contact you in coordinator efforts. It was a huge success, I think all of the vendors came away with a good feeling, I will submit some of the items here that we received feedback on in re to this project, and there was a feedback form that they could fill out and return back via email or mail if they did not do it there. This was a unique experience with classes, plenty of time to browses the booths, and just the nice informal atmosphere was wonderful. Chuck will be placing some photographs online for the Historical Society, and some for the GaGenWeb project from this event. So, if you want to participate in a "overall" great project of sharing and creativity..... send me the email ltlbit@springmail.com NOTE: I will be unsubbed from this list for the remainder of the week, if you have a crisis, please contact Margie Daniels or Tim Stowell. 3. Free? No, voting does not make it free, because " Freedom is not FREE" Every single person that has lost their life either in a battle or by being in the wrong place during an attack, has paid the price for freedom, I don't think any of the parents or siblings or wives would say that it is FREE. The pain and suffering by the families is in itself a horrible price to pay. The fact is that Freedom of choice is the freedom to choose if you do or do not want to vote, if you choose to do or not to do something, the fact that someone chooses not to do something is not always an indicator of whether or not they are "uninterested", it does say state one thing .... "THEY DID NOT VOTE" ..... that is their right, that is the freedom to choose or not to choose. Freedom is about choices and the right to choose whether or not you will participate in something. So please don't trample on others FREEDOM - their freedoms ARE freedom of choice .... Vivian wrote: Even sadder: I guess a lot of folks don't see that voting helps keep it free. You will find many of the same volunteers in one or more of the projects. In addition to the three mentioned above, there are other projects that cover every county in the state. 3. The fact remains that when one signs up for a GaGenWeb site - the rules that are agreed to both national and state level are indicative of the county site being the central repository for the data - if one is not going to do that then they should not take the site. Why put something somewhere else that you won't put on the page or site that YOU maintain????? It's kind of like the army ;;;; Let your site "be all that it can be, and that's not just a links page...... just in case anyone was wondering. in re to: "my site may be links but"....

    3. Since several folks have asked - I find this is the best way to answer all at once: Funny thing with visiting my aunt who is dying of cancer - I come away from seeing her enriched, rewarded and refreshed for she has the sweetest spirit regarding her future of anyone around her. On 4/21 they will try a one time procedure called 'gamma knife' where they inject cobalt directly into the center of each of her 3 brain tumors in hopes of killing the tumors. Two are in the front, left and right and one at the base of the brain in her neck. This procedure is a new one recently approved of by the FDA and supposedly they've had remarkable success with it. Of course this is all a delaying of the inevitable but we're grateful for such time as she has. May 19th will be her 74th birthday. Tim PS - I'm also posting replies to messages sent to the list as long ago as 4/8, as I play catch up and wading through the snow...!

    1. [GAGEN] Guidelines Revision Committee
    2. mannannan
    3. Gentlefolk: Many of you may recall from last week that we announced that we would be forming a committee designed to revise the guidelines in the GeorgiaGenWeb Project. The sheer number of volunteers was overwhelming. Unfortunately, I could not accept everyone who volunteered. I wish I could. However, there must be some size constraints with any group, and I felt that eight persons (plus myself) was a perfect number. I have, however, created a position on the committee of a secretary. I will be selecting an additional volunteer to serve on the Committee as a secretary. The secretary shall, in the event of disqualification of a committee member, or the inability of a committee member to complete the daunting task ahead of us for any reason, shall assume a seat on the committee and a new secretary may be appointed. I shall serve on the Committee as Chair. I will not vote except for the purposes of breaking a tie. The SC of Georgia shall be an Ex Officio member of the Committee, which means that he shall be a member and have the right to speak and to be heard. He shall not, however, be entitled to a vote on the issues before the Committee. The Committee has a lot of work ahead of it. The first thing that each member of the Committee shall be asked to do is to read both the Georgia Guidelines and the National Guidelines. There are conflicts between the two. This issue must be addressed without delay. The second task with which I will burden the Committee shall be the creation of a County Coordinator’s Bill of Rights. This document shall be a companion document to the Guidelines and shall spell out the rights of the County Coordinators. The third task will be to establish procedures for the bringing and hearing of a grievance by a CC against an RC, an SC or a fellow CC. Once these tasks are complete, we shall begin the tedious process of redrafting the Guidelines. I fully expect this work to take four months, and perhaps closer to six months. Each new document shall be available for you to review at any time. I will advise you of where to locate it in the future (as that issue is resolved and the party who will maintain this information is identified). Also, each Policy, Procedure and Right shall be voted on by you, the Members. It is my hope that much of this can be handled in conjunction with the NC election that is forthcoming. The members of the Committee are (in no particular order): Derek Nichols, who will be responsible for communicating with the CC’s in the Southwest Region (Jimmy Epperson’s region). Kathleen Pettys, who will be responsible for communicating with the CC’s in the Coastal Region (my region). Jan Cortez, who will be responsible for communicating with the CC’s in the Northwest Region (Margie Daniels’ region). Margie Daniels, who will be responsible for communicating with the CC’s in the Metro Region (Brenda Pierce’s Region). Debra Crosby will be responsible for the communicating with the CC’s in the South Central Region (Melody McCook’s region). Wyndell Taylor will be responsible for communicating with the CC’s in the East Central Region (the region currently being RC’ed by Tim and Brenda). Gloria Holbeck will be responsible for communicating with the CC’s in the Northwest Region (Bill Clody’s region). Vivian Saffold (if she accepts) will be responsible for communicating with the CC’s in the West Central Region (Virginia Crilley’s region). I will be naming a secretary in the next few days. Thank you, Richard

    3. Michele, Wonderful article. I wish everyone would do the same! If we all tried in our little sections of the world, imagine what we could do! Frequently many of us are not interested until it is to late. I did the same with my family. <sigh> Now when I want that info, many family members are gone. We have a cemetery where I live in Michigan, that was used by the county poor farm. Now it's in the hands of a private party. The guy that owns it, wants others to believe that the graves were removed, and he wants to make an easement thru that area. I'm sorry folks, but, even though I don't have family there, I would not want that to happen to my folks. I am trying my darndest to find some records, other than the few I have in my township office, to establish who is there. I want the township or county to buy the land from him and when all sources have been exhausted for who is there to put a memorial stone on the small section of property. Maybe they won't know exactly where their family member was buried in that section, but there should be a memorial to them, giving them some closure. Guess I'd have to say that you have tapped my passion as well. After reading your atricle, I will be back at it on Monday with more energy than ever. Thanks Michele for your wonderful story and your love and concern for our ancestors. 3. Here's an interesting article that was in yesterdays Dallas news paper. Naturally it was a lot longer in the paper than it is online, but it tells about an old run down cemetery and how some teachers have turned it into an educational experience for their school. http://www.dallasnews.com/localnews/stories/041203dnmetcemetery.da85f.html Spur any ideas for the teachers out there? enjoy... jimmy

I hope you get lots of calls. It reminded me of one of the sources I used that I may not have mentioned. The GA DOT maps for your county. I was using a 1965 map and they just had little dotted rectangles that represented cemeteries. Some were close to churches but some weren't. These turned out to be family. Dona
