    3. In the last couple of days - 3 more chapters of Georgia history have been added to the state page: http://www.rootsweb.com/~gagenweb/gahistry.htm I had a letter over the weekend from a visitor - which brought a problem to my attention that I really had not thought of before. This visitor was having problems viewing one of our sites because he suffers from color blindness. I found out from a search about such that 8 of every 100 men suffer from this and .5 women out of every 100 do as well. Since a potential 8 men and .5 women who visit our sites may not be able to see our data because of our backgrounds and/or other factors - please consider reviewing some of the following URLs, which can give you more information on the problem and what we can do as page builders to assist these folks in having a pleasant experience while visiting our sites. http://www.webtechniques.com/archives/2000/08/newman/ http://www.infotoday.com/searcher/jun98/story3.htm http://www.uiowa.edu/~uiweb/resources.html http://vischeck.com/index.php http://bobby.watchfire.com/bobby/html/en/index.jsp http://newmanservices.com/colorblind/default.asp http://www.visibone.com/colorblind/ Tim

    2. Jacki Jonas
    3. Good morning, I recently sent a Roll Call request to all counties in the SW Region. For those who have replied already, thank you! For those who haven't, you should've received another mailing this morning. Please respond by May 24th. Also, I will be visiting the sites to check for Guideline Compliance in the near future. And for everyone out there: if you haven't sent in your suggestions to your contact on the GRC -- do it today! We really want to know what you think! Thanks, Jacki ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Colquitt County GAGenWeb Coordinator http://www.rootsweb.com/~gacolqu2/ Southwest Regional Coordinator

    1. [GAGEN] Fw: GAHOUSTON web site hacking
    2. Jim & Gaila
    3. Now that I have calmed down from thinking someone had hacked into the site, and can see it was a change in the link, I am checking all of the links. Seems like I have just done this, but this site did not come up as a broken link in the report, so unless someone had warned me about it, it may have been awhile before I came across it. I think the most important thing is to fix it as quickly as possible, when you do realise it. I had images of my strict Baptist Aunts coming to scold me - not a nice image. They wouldn't have tolerated this type of site for one minute. I think they would have been down there hitting someone on the head with an umbrella. Still given all this brouhaha, I think quarterly updates will work. Given the moment someone warns you of a breach in the system, it is fixed asap. 3. Mary Kathryn Some can check for content if the site subscribes to one of the Site Rating services like Safe Surf. That stuff is all in meta tags which the programs can parse. When you rate your site you have to submit the url to the Rating outfit who periodically checks your site for content that doesn't fit the rating. One of the problems that we have in the genealogy word is we use words that in one context would not be very nice but in the hereditary context are simply factual. I am not sure the rating services can rate that sort of site accurately unless they do it by count then an occasional reference to someone's illegitimate heritage might not cause a problem.<G> I also wasn't really hyping link checking software - I feel the programs and/or services that do much of a job of that are way too expensive except for commercial sites. My html design software will check the links but only the on site are really worth the trouble because as you say they don't tell you anything about what it connects to and the reality is that the site may be there today and be long gone tomorrow or it could be down for a week and come back up. 3. Bill - The only issue I would mention with the software that will "check links" is that it will only check to see if the link "works". It doesn't necessarily check it for content. Now the software I have may not be as sophisticated as a lot of those out there, but I'm not aware of one that checks for content as opposed to whether the link works or not... Good suggestion to check all those "outside" links though! URLs do change and can be bought out, and we could end up promoting something we don't want to (even if it isn't porn)! 3. That happened to me a year ago or more. Nothing had been hacked. It was a link on mine which had originally pointed to a Native American site. They apparently let the url expire and the people who grabbed it were putting up a porn site. Fortunately I think I stumbled upon it myself and the site wasn't as hardcore as some. I never did manage to exactly hook up with the Native American link that had been there but did manage to find something similar. I don't know anything you can do but basically check your link periodically. There are services that will do that for you for a fee and their is software that will check all your links periodically. Most are pretty expensive of what I have seen. 3. Hello! I was checking pages recently and noticed that Ken Brown has done something unique with email addy's on the Tattnall County Page (http://www.rootsweb.com/%7Egatattna/contact.htm). I believe these are graphics and they prevent web spiders from picking up email addy's, which, we hope, cuts down on SPAM. I wanted to publicly acknowledge such a great idea by Ken and show this to the rest of us who might be interested. :) Richard

    1. [GAGEN] Update of Guidelines Revision Committee
    2. Mannannan
    3. Gentlefolk, Just wanted to give you a quick update on the Guidelines Revision Committee. We are currently working on a CC's Bill of Rights. Most of you have been contacted by the GRC Representative who has been tasked with handling your region. Very few have responded. This is YOUR opportunity to be heard. This is YOUR opportunity to make your wishes known and to make suggestions. Please take advantage of this opportunity. We recently held a vote on a motion to set a deadline for CC Suggestions to the CC's Bill of Rights. That deadline is May 19, 2003. Why are we setting a deadline? To give us an opportunity to put something together to be sent to you for review that it may be on the ballot with the July National Elections. We are currently voting on a motion to post your suggestions as catgorized by TOPIC, not by region and without your name being attached. We feel this is important because many of you might fear some retaliation for your opinions. While those fears are most assuredly unfounded, the simple truth is they are very real to those who have them. Jacki Jonas, our Secretary, a committee member and a brand new RC, has created a page for us at http://www.rootsweb.com/~gacolqu2/Guidelines/ with a page on Motions at http://www.rootsweb.com/~gacolqu2/Guidelines/Motions.html and suggestions for the Bill of Rights can be found at http://www.rootsweb.com/~gacolqu2/Guidelines/BOR.html. As such, you can see exactly what we are working on. We are working for you. We need your feedback and would be appreciative if you would make it a point to keep yourself informed of what we are doing. An informed CC is our best friend! Thanks, Richard --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). Version: 6.0.476 / Virus Database: 273 - Release Date: 4/24/2003

    1. Re: [GAGEN] Guideline Suggestions (grievance coucil response to questions)
    2. Bill Clody
    3. I guess that I more or less agree with Wyndell. I believe a shorter term will get more of the mass of CC's involved in the process. If the length of time is going to be measured in multiple years I think there will be many who simply say "I don't have the time to do that". That said I wonder though if a somewhat longer term like 6 months with half of the grievance council going off every three months wouldn't work better. I think if you have a situation where you start from scratch every 3 months with this group any sort of continuity will be lost. You in effect will have a situation where every quarter there is a new group looking(virtually) at each other over their coffee and going "well what do we do now" I think the other thing gained out of a staggered thing like this is that a group of CC's working together gets to familiarize themselves every so often with a different mix of CC's. You go on the council and meet half a committee (or council) that has been in place for 3 months and is already up to speed and after 3 months you get to work with another yet group of CC's when you have had 3 months in place. I really believe that meeting and working with other CC's may be as much of a "healing" process as anything else. I don't think that meeting(albeit online) and working with a group where you meet some different personalities and work with them can be anything but beneficial for all of us. As several have said "just my opinion" Bill ----- Original Message ----- From: "Wyndell Taylor" <gagenie@bellsouth.net> To: <GAGEN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, May 06, 2003 10:46 AM Subject: Re: [GAGEN] Guideline Suggestions (grievance coucil response to questions) > At 09:13 AM 5/6/03 EDT, Johnstien@aol.com wrote: > > "This Grievance Council must be made up of elected CCs who have > > experience within the GAGENWEB. 2. Jacki Jonas
    3. Thank you for the warm welcome! I sent two emails tonight to the CCs in the Southwest region: one as a member of the Guidelines Revision Committee, and one as the new RC. If you are CC of a county in this region and *didn't* get an email from me, please contact me! I need to make sure that I have accurate email addresses for everyone. (I have already received two bounced messages.) Counties of the Southwest Region: Baker, Brooks, Calhoun, Clay, Colquitt, Decatur, Dougherty, Early, Grady, Lee, Miller, Mitchell, Quitman, Randolph, Seminole, Stewart, Sumter, Terrell, Thomas, Webster. Thanks! Jacki ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Colquitt County GAGenWeb Coordinator http://www.rootsweb.com/~gacolqu2/ Southwest Regional Coordinator
