    3. I had something similar to that happen shortly after I took the Gordon County site - the person asked me why the material she sent wasn't on the site - turned out she'd submitted it to another place and was confused about the different genealogy sites. Anyway - I asked her to send it to me and I uploaded it and it all turned out fine - she's sent more info since then. I can understand why it's confusing to some people. They don't know the structure of the organization and send things in in good faith. Most people are very understanding and glad for you to be interested in what they've taken the time to transcribe and send. I believe the rule of thumb is that the material belongs to the submitter - so she has the right to say where her material is posted. 1. Re: [GAGEN] Another Tax List question
    2. When I worked in the dime store when I was in college, we used mills to collect the sales tax. They were round and gray and were dropped into a metal box attached to the side of the register. Each one equalled 1/10 of a cent. I don't remember what the tax rate was. Now we use pennies, in our county 7 on the dollar and the register keeps up with it. 3. I would ask the person for permission to add the materials to my site. I firmly believe that the main project county site should be the "one-stop site" for that county's digitally available material. It's a long process, but I have been actively doing permissions for some time to get ALL Wilkes County data on my site. I have yet to be denied after a nice simple request. It's amazing how many of these folks are surprised you even ask. It's like they are offended that you believe they own any rights to the material. --Keith D W Byrd wrote: >I received a message from a person who donated some civil material to one of my counties a long time ago. 3. I received a message from a person who donated some civil material to one of my counties a long time ago. That county has changed hands a couple of times between then and now. The site is still up, but identified as not being a genweb site. The person was confused as to why the information was on the other site rather than the official Genweb site. I very tactful told them that the person had passed the baton on but still maintained the information and the website as an independent site. I don't intend to contact the former CC and ask for the information. Is there anything else that could have been done or said? This is one reason that while I do post information given me to the County site, I still encourage people to post to the archives. When I give up my counties I fully intend that all of their content goes with the counties. Deborah Byrd

    1. Message Board - Objections Follow-up
    2. Virginia Crilley
    3. Follow-up on the "Objections" for Message Boards: I had a very nice response from Joan Young to help me understand this, and wanted to pass it along to all of you Board Managers. This "Objection Notice" was brought about mainly due to some cross-postings on multiple boards, and also the continued usage of surnames which were not in the actual message. Check the Objections link ONCE each time you review the new posts to your boards--you only need click on it once as ALL objections for EVERY board you admin will show up there when you click on it--no matter which board you are on when you click it (as long as you are logged in as admin). (This was a very helpful hint -- so you don't need to go through all the boards you manage.... clicking from any Board will alert you to all objections posted) Virginia

    1. BIZ more on mailing lists
    2. Michael and Vivian Saffold
    3. Hello, all, From now on I will include the notation, BIZ, in the subject line of all posts that concern the business of GAGenWeb. Any replies also should contain BIZ in the subject line. Everyone should be able to configure an email filter to channel the BIZ emails into a special folder, if he/she desires. I realize that some of you tried to introduce this idea on the list in the last few days, but I had never tried it. I tested it yesterday, and it worked fine for me (Eudora Pro 4.2). If it works for everyone else, it should eliminate the need for a separate mailing list. Let's try it for a week or so. If we find it does not work, then I will create a small mailing list for those who want to segregate business emails from chat. Just a reminder: there are no restrictions on what can be posted to GAGen-L, as long as messages are respectful and courteous. Vivian

    3. Virginia, Were the objections all from Joan Young? I checked my message boards, and Joan Young had posted several objections yesterday. She is the administrator of the message boards. Apparently she is doing some housekeeping. I can't believe she is looking at all the messages on every board. They must have developed a program that is searching the messages for certain types of problems. Most of mine were "irrelevant to the board." I always delete names from the surname list which aren't found in the message, so I didn't have any of those. Dan... ----- Original Message ----- From: Virginia Crilley To: [email protected] Sent: Monday, January 17, 2005 8:48 AM Subject: [GAGEN] Message Board - Objections I thought I'd pass this along since I know some of you do manage County Message Boards. This a.m. I had a letter from Rootsweb saying that I had an unusually high number of "objections" on the Jones County message board and to please deal with them. I really hadn't a clue what this was about....and then went to the Jones Board in my Administrator mode, and sure enough there is a line at the very top left hand corner "Review Objections". I had 46 objections --- waiting for a decision. (I have since checked my other boards and didn't have any "objections"...so I think someone is just annoyed with the Jones Board). Most of them were in regard to the multiple surnames listed -- which were all the surnames the individual was researching, and most not included within the message itself. It took me a while, but I finally got through all those, editing the surnames appropriately. Each objection has to be considered and a decision made.... my guess is that individuals reading a message, must then "report abuse" and that is how an objection occurs. After this, I'm sure going to watch that board more closely so objections don't stack up. Virginia ==== GAGEN Mailing List ==== Confused about Copyrights? 3. In the past few months, there has been someone who thinks they are the messageboard marshal and has been placing these objections ... this is not an Ancestry/RootsWeb staffer, and when it happens it starts a thread. You may want to ask about it on the Board-admin list. Joan may be able to help you. 3. That's the term Rootsweb uses right on the Board screen! "Review Objections". Since most of these messages were sent by one person, who did post all the surnames in every single message, all I could figure out is that someone trying to search the Jones Board, came up with all these messages which didn't even mention one of the surnames that had been listed. Then I think the person must have gone to the part of the Message Board where you "alert" the Manager when you think a message should be removed. The "objection" notice on the screen (the one where the list of 46 were) usually stated -- "surnames not in message". I just "edited" those, because if the message was a valid one, I wanted it to stay there for those who could make use of it. I honestly don't know how to "post an objection"....does anyone? My learning is to watch when the person posts a message, and then go take care of it right on the spot....so they don't stack up. I was aghast when I saw 46 needing my "decision". And that took quite a bit of time. Virginia At 11:33 AM 1/17/2005 -0600, you wrote: >Objections to what? You've lost me on this one. What are they objecting to? > >Vicki >

    3. Not a bad idea, Vivian. I just wish I had joyous news like the Gordons and the Woods to share some day... I'll be glad to let all know when my son actually finds a real and lasting girlfriend...bless his heart. <grin> As far as chat and business topics, we should probably be more considerate with our subject lines. If I am in a pinch for time, I read the business-looking ones, and hold off on the others until later. And if "chatty" lasts for a while, I sometimes switch to a personal note instead . Just as in any other family, we are all : different individuals, with different points of view, preferences, thoughts : and feelings. The fact that we're different does not make anyone right or : wrong, just different. That's just human nature. However, we have more in : common than other people. We are all members of the unique family called : GAGenWeb. : : I must say that I appreciate the courteous way in which this discussion has : been conducted. Thanks, too, for the many constructive ideas. : : I certainly understand that "chatty" email can be time-consuming, : especially for those who work from home. I work from home, but have a : system in place for segregating email that needs an immediate response from : correspondence that can wait. However, I can understand how being able to : put non-urgent email into a separate folder could be beneficial. : : I have heard from 34 of you, enough, I think to make a decision on this issue. : : Of that number, 23 prefer one list, 7 want two lists, 3 had no opinion and : 1 prefers "no chat." : : Of the 23 who prefer one list, most said that "chit-chat" was a valuable : part of the project, promoting a sense of "community" and "family." : : **I must point out that not one person has said that chat was a bad thing. : The suggestion of a different way to manage email should not be interpreted : as a personal affront to anyone. Likewise, the posting of baby : announcements and such violated no rule and certainly is not wrong.** : : Please understand that all of you, your babies, grandbabies and great : grandbabies, parents, siblings, puppies and kitties, your "day jobs" and : all the events in your lives are important. These relationships and events : help make us who we are. *Who we are* is what makes us -- every single one : of us -- vital to our counties and to this project. : : I would like to continue operating GAGen-L like it is. It will remain the : official and archived list. However, I will create another mailing list for : those of you who would like to be able to segregate strictly business : correspondence from all other project email. I will create this list on my : own computer. Only my posts and forwards from the national project will be : included on this list. : : Please let me know if you would like to be subscribed to the alternate : list. If we see down the road that the arrangement is not working, we can : always make changes. : : Thanks, all of you, for your constructive input. : : Vivian : : : ==== GAGEN Mailing List ==== : Confused about Copyrights?
