    3. Liz, You stated yourself very clearly. Your comments were either taken out of context, or additional context was added to them. It's a chronic problem within USGenWeb, but we shouldn't let that deter our opinion, or the expression thereof. I, for one, appreciated your comments and look forward to your opinions on these and future matters that arise on this list. --Keith [email protected] wrote: >When I bite the dust, or my toes are turned up, or I follow the lonesome trail, I just want some way to make sure that my county sites stay with GAGenWeb Project. > >I have asked may times for files and permission has always been granted. 1. Re: [GAGEN] County Sites
    2. I had what I thought was a good page at http://www.rootsweb.com/~gaforsyt/ Brenda Webb started it, I came on as co CC and then we swapped places. The SC complimented the page on the mail list. From that point on there was a hassle. I sat here and watched really good sites go down. When I questioned why, the answers did not coincide with what the leaving CCs were telling me. Then we started working on by-laws. I was advised to split up the material, putting the Historical Society and ALHN/AHGP material on different websites so the RC's could "grab what they needed" when I was gone. So I split the material before the by-laws were passed. When I was trying to help another CC with her HTML skills, I received letters accusing me of being unprofessional and "if you were in the private sector you would be fired" (apparently only RCs could help). At that point I resigned many of my pages. I had already turned Lumpkin over to Dan. He was willing to take Hall also and I passed on all material on both. He has handled them very well. However, White and Gordon and Dawson did not fare as well. I gave Dawson to my co CC, Brenda Webb. She was delinked from genweb over her Dawson page without the 30 day notice required by the by-laws. She was also removed as my co CC on Forsyth and they would not reinstate her. (This proof was submitted to the AB). At that point, Brenda Webb asked that her material be placed elsewhere as did many other Forsyth submitters. It was moved. I refer you to the GAGEN Archives to see that I tried to pass on the material for Gordon and White. Since we reorganized, I was able to pass on White (webspace and all) to Vicki Shaffer and she is doing a good job. Beth is doing a good job on Gordon (http://www.rootsweb.com/~gagordo3/) as opposed to the intervening one and I would like to transfer some more over to her. The secret to "control" is to make rules clear and have everyone abide by them equally. People that feel unfairly treated feel no loyalty to the project. Material that goes to the archives goes on permanent loan. Material that goes to the county sites goes with the copyright remaining with the submitters. Ask the submitters to allow you to use it. I personally have the copyright to four books on Forsyth County, plus newspaper columns and panphlets. I also am named as contributer on several other books and articles on the County. This represents 34 years of work. There is some of my material that I will not relinquish the rights on. Other material will transfer to the Historical Society of Forsyth County, Inc. We have a good shot at making this project what it should be. Now is not the time to start the archives versus county pages argument or to try to take someone's work by rules tather than by asking. Being pleasant and playing fair will go a long way towards building this project. Donna Parrish In a message dated 1/20/05 9:23:56 AM Eastern Standard Time, [email protected] writes: > I would like to address Deborah's last sentence of her recent mail to the > list regarding the removal of information from a county site. > > "When I give up my counties I fully intend that all of their content goes > with the counties. 1. RE: [GAGEN] County Sites
    2. Linda Barton
    3. Liz, The USGenWeb Bylaws that we are currently operating under have this to say - ARTICLE XI. LOCAL PROJECTS Section 4. If a Local Coordinator can no longer perform their duties for any reason, those sections of the website submitted or donated by contributors other than the website coordinator, shall remain with the website, unless the submitter(s)/contributor(s) indicates otherwise. There hasn't been a consistent effort to enforce this across the country - but in the case of one county which left USGenWeb Project this year and took all user contributed data with it, I have been going into archive.org's record of the site, writing to the contributors and asking permission for their data to go back on the GAGenWeb site and then sending that info to the new CC of the county. It is time consuming but takes less time than someone having to transcribe the information again. I have not had anyone tell me no. I've found that most people don't realize their contributions to GAGenWeb are not a part of the project any longer. The one problem you run into is on sites where the coordinators did not give credit to the donator of the information to begin with - it's hard to know who contributed what but I have had success by looking at older pages on archive.org until I dig the contributors name out. I have completed this process on one county and am working on a couple of others when I have time. It's not the perfect way to do it but it is working albeit slow! Linda Blum-Barton -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Thursday, January 20, 2005 9:24 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [GAGEN] County Sites I would like to address Deborah's last sentence of her recent mail to the list regarding the removal of information from a county site. "When I give up my counties I fully intend that all of their content goes with the counties. Deborah Byrd" I have received both a county complete with all information (Monroe) and one where the information had been moved to another project by the former coordinator (Carroll). I have never felt that I 'owned' the information left in my care on the Monroe pages and that when the pages are passed on to another coordinator, all files will be included. Even should I become dissatisfied with the GAGenWeb Project and decided to resign, those files contributed by others would remain intact. I do not think a coordinator should have the ability to rob a site of all content, especially that contributed by others. In one of my cases, the former coordinator had transcribed no records and had no records of her own on the county page yet all information was removed. When and if I leave the GAGenWeb Project, I too would want the content to go with the county page. Now so much for that; the new coordinator takes over and decides to move the information to another web site and we have no control over it being moved. 3. I have gotten several wills for Miller Co. and as I read them I came across this item and well I got my first good laugh of the day.....just tickled me...I am sorry. 1. Whereas, during the year 1927, I gave to my son Hoke Bush the sum of one thousand ($1000.00) dollars in consideration of his promise to me that he would quit smoking any tobacco in any form and whereas, it has come to my knowledge that my said son, Hoke Bush, has violate his said agreement with me, and has within my own knowledge been smoking tobacco recently. I therefore direct that the executrix of said will, collect out of said Hoke Bush, and out of the property devised to him by me the sum of one thousand dollars with interest thereon from the first day of January, 1928, at the rate of eight percent per annum, said amount to be deducted from any bequest made by me in said will, to said Hoke Bush, and said executrix is further directed to pay said sum when so collected to my wife, Dola Bush and my daughter, Myrtle Bush Roberts, share and share alike Now that's funny I dont care who you are!!!!!!!!! I bet Hoke will have wished he had quit at least for a little while that was a HIGH intrest rate for the time I think. Ed

    3. I would suggest that Deborah ask the person to re-submit the data to her. This project adheres to the rule that data belongs to the submitter. However, the other project may not. It might be difficult for the submitter to have the data removed from the other site. Posting data to the Archives is fine, but we also need data on our county pages.
