When I give tours in Atlanta I usually say "Nobody in Atlanta really worries about all those Peachtrees." Mostly we focus on Peachtree Street which turns to Peachtree Road in Buckhead, and a little farther out it is Peachtree Industrial Blvd. Just follow the yellow brick road. There are many myths and legends about the origin of Peachtree. In fact Margaret Mitchell's father Eugene Muse Mitchell (1866-1944) wrote an article for the Atlanta Historical Journal about Peachtree. The word Peachtree according to city history is older than the word Atlanta. All goes back to Muskogee (Creek) Indians and whether or not one really believes pioneer George Washington Collier's story about one lonely peach tree in the Muskogee village of Standing Peachtree or whether one believes pioneer Jonathan Norcross' story about the pine tree and that some of the Scots and Irish pronounced the name as pitch tree. Oh, well...that's Atlanta! As Lewis Grizzard use to say..."Delta is ready when you are!" Ann in Atlanta
