Five Points today is where Marietta, Decatur, Peachtree, Edgewood come together. Years ago the southern section of Peachtree was called Whitehall Street--thus 5 points. Now the question is when was this section first called Five Points. I have checked with the Atlanta Public Library and the Atlanta History Center and neither has found exactly when Five Points was called Five Points. The late Atlanta Historian Franklin Garrett once remarked that the only historical error Margaret Mitchell made in her Gone with the Wind was using the term Five Points at the time of the Civil War. So it remains a mystery when the term Five Points was first used in Atlanta History. Ann in Atlanta
