Claudia, If you are coming from I-20 East toward Atlanta, when you get to I-285 head north (I don't know exactly how the signs will be listed) Continue northward on I-285 until you get to the Peachtree Industrial Exit (this will take you past Memorial Drive, Northlake and the I-85 exits at Spaghetti Junction). Exit at Peachtree Industrial South (which will take you inside I-285). Proceed South on Peachtree Industrial until you get to Dresden Drive (you will go past Oglethorpe University) which will be at the Brookhaven Marta Station. You will take a left turn onto Dresden Drive. Go on Dresden until you reach Skyland Drive and turn right (there will be a light). You will be in a residential neighborhood. The Vital Records Department is in an old school on the right on Skyland. To find the correct end of the school, you will actually go past what you would think would be the office (this IS a State Government office, after all!). The parking area for Vital Records will be the very last parking lot and the office in the last wing of the building. This is also a building for Public Health and can be a bit confusing. There is plenty of free parking. Copies for marriage, birth and death certificates are $10.00 each payable only in cash. If you are where you can check for a death certificate number from the index, it will greatly increase your chances of actually obtaining a death certificate. Even though it was required after 1918, not all deaths were issued a death certificate. A clerk in the Vital Records Office told me that even in cases where a certificate was issued they didn't always make it to Vital Records. The clerks search from the same microfilm index that is available at large libraries with genealogy records (the State Archives also has a copy). Sometimes a woman's name will be listed as "Mrs. John Doe" instead of her own given name "Mary Smith Doe". Since the clerks won't have any idea that grandpa was "John Doe" they may or may not search under the name the certificate was issued. The certificate will not be issued in the county where the deceased lived, but died. I had a hard time finding an ancestor who was listed under her husband's name and died in a distant county at her daughter's home. In other words, the clerks search will be limited to what you can supply them - do your homework in order to not waste a trip. Hope this helps someone.
