Ann, I don't believe it could have been called Five Points until after they built the streets up over the railroads creating the point. It doesn't appear to be there on the 1886 map. I believe they did that about the late 1890's. However, I can't find an appropriate reference. Five Points was very clearly defined in 1957 when I worked at Fulton Bag and Cotton Mill and ran up there on my lunch hour to shop. Franklin Garrett and I never discussed that. Because of my cemetery book we spent our conversation time discussing cemeteries. Although we did have a lively discussion over when they tore down the arches at the entrance to what is now Peachtree DeKalb Airport. If I find an appropriate map or reference, I will post it. Donna
Was your grandfather Thomas P. Fleming? Ann in Atlanta
Although I went several years in the 70s to Peachtree Sr. High; When calling them for reunions, they told me there are none and that the school is a junior high! I know of one website by a former student. What happen to change the school, and how do we find out what happen to folks? Steven Piper class of 75'
Five Points today is where Marietta, Decatur, Peachtree, Edgewood come together. Years ago the southern section of Peachtree was called Whitehall Street--thus 5 points. Now the question is when was this section first called Five Points. I have checked with the Atlanta Public Library and the Atlanta History Center and neither has found exactly when Five Points was called Five Points. The late Atlanta Historian Franklin Garrett once remarked that the only historical error Margaret Mitchell made in her Gone with the Wind was using the term Five Points at the time of the Civil War. So it remains a mystery when the term Five Points was first used in Atlanta History. Ann in Atlanta
If you go to http://www.accessatlanta.com/partners/ajc/photos/ Right now they have a picture of Five Points in 1907 with Peachtee Street under it. If they have changed the picture go down in the column under the Galleries and click on Peachtree Street.
This is an Atlanta Map. from 1886 http://www.libs.uga.edu/darchive/hargrett/maps/1886d3.jpg 5 Points was the downtown center of Atlanta where the 5 major thoroughfares intersected. http://www.cnn.com/TRAVEL/CITY.GUIDES/US/georgia/atlanta.html If you look at this map and look at the black rectangle (Marta Station) marked Five Points. Where the five streets intersect under the words, that is Five Points.
Hi, Thanks for the information on 5 points. It has certainly changed sind Grandfather Fleming stood on his front porch!! Thanks. Yes, to both Harris and Hogue. Harris is downtown. Starts at Centenial Olympic Park--use to be around the Luckie Street area and extended to Bedford Place on my 1934 city map. Hogue Street is in the Sweet Auburn, MLK Historic District. It is near Old Wheat Street. Ann in Atlanta

Dear Ann, I have alwayse been interested in a story that my grandfather told about his life in Atlanta, Ga. He said he was standing on the front poarch of his home at "5 points" when the invading army entered Atlanta. He said that the family was afraid and left for the hills where they stayed in a cave. He remembers meeting some Yanksees outside the cave. They offered him some candy. When he told his parents where he got the candy he was spanked!! My question to you is where is "5 points"? Not a very important question but one that I have been curious about. Annie BELL & Joseph J. KELL(e)Y were married March 28, 1907 in Fulton County, GA by D. A. Cook, D.O. (or D.P. copy hard to read). Where did the couple live, 1907 - 1908? Who were her parents? (Mother was reportedly known as "Mrs. M. A. Bell") Any record of the birth of Joseph & Annie's daughter, Annie Lenora Kelly (2/10/1908)? Annie Bell Kelly died when the daughter was born; any clue about her death or burial? ANY clues would be deeply appreciated! Fran in Ohio tbay@columbus.rr.com
Does anyone know if Greenwood Cemetery in Fulton Co. is on-line? Also, has anyone ever heard of a J. Austin Dillon (?) Funeral Home in Atlanta? Mary Anne
