Joseph STRICKLAND was a resident of Franklin Co., GA when he participated in the 1805 GA Land Lottery. Has anyone identified this Joseph Strickland? I propose that this Joseph Strickland may be the son of Aaron Strickland (b.ca 1725), of Robeson Co., NC. Joseph Strickland was among the heirs of Aaron Strickland who sold his share of their father's land to Jacob Strickland in 1801 (Robeson Co., NC Deed Book M, p. 142). A Joseph Strickland is mentioned in 1808 as having 33 acres sold at auction for back taxes (Robeson Co., NC Deed Book P, pp. 236-237). Could it be this land was sold for back taxes because Joseph Strickland had abandoned his land, to settle in GA? It is felt that a later Joseph Strickland, born about 1786/1789 in NC, was a grandson of Aaron Strickland, of Robeson Co., NC. It would appear that the only son of Aaron Strickland to possibly be residing in northern GA during the first decade of the nineteenth century would be Joseph Strickland. Therefore, it would seem that the elder Joseph Strickland would be the best candidate for the younger Joseph's father. For the sake of clarity, I will refer to the elder Joseph Strickland, possibly the son of Aaron Strickland of Robeson Co., NC, as Joseph Strickland, Sr. I will refer to Joseph Strickland (b.ca 1786/1789), as Joseph Strickland, Jr. Joseph Strickland, Jr. was married to Mary "Polly" [Crow?] (b.ca 1793 in SC) about 1810/1811, possibly in Jackson Co., GA. It is believed that Polly was a sister of Martha "Patsy" Crow, the wife of Ervin Strickland, a possible brother of Joseph Strickland, Jr. Joseph Strickland, Jr. is found in Hall Co., GA in the 1820 Census. He is listed living adjacent to Richard Heath and Christiana Thomas. Interestingly, Richard Heath was married to Mourning HICKMAN, daughter of William and Lucretia (STRICKLAND) Hickman. Christiana Thomas was also a daughter of William and Lucretia (Strickland) Hickman. Joseph Strickland, Jr. remained in Hall Co., GA until his death in 1880. I continue to uncover information that adds one small piece of the puzzle at a time. Hopefully, one day it will provide a clear picture of Joseph Strickland's antecedents. Any comments are welcome.
