In 1808, my Caleb Garrison paid a poll tax for John Fleming; in 1819, he and William D. Fleming bought land from Pliny R. Fleming, with James Fleming a witness. This land description mentioned the "old Wm. Fleming line." The relationship between Caleb and these Flemings is unknown, but it is possible they were of Caleb's wife Sarah Fleming's family. My search continues for proof of parents for Anderson HILL, born in Franklin Co., GA in 1806, died in 1884 in Banks Co., GA. I've been told there is a deed showing the relationship with Thomas HILL as the father of Anderson, but have not seen such deed. My great-grandfather was Henry P. Hill, son of Anderson and Sarah Sallie Meadors. There are several researchers for this line. I would love to compare notes again. I am looking for information on William Norris, said by Harry Davis to have been a Justice of the Peace in Franklin County in the very latter part of the 1700's. Any information about him and or his wife will be appreciated. It seems that Davis confused this Norris family with my Norris family from Oglethorpe County and I am in the process of trying to straighten it out. Any help will be greatly appreciated...C B Jones, Melbourne Fl cjones5@cfl.rr.com

Admin to List, I thought I would take this time as your list guy to kind of let you in on the status of list. It has over 300 people. The Web Pages for Franklin County has had several hits lately. As some of you know the 1840 census is posted on the web site. I have received much e-mail concerning this. However some corrections are needed in the spelling of surnames posted. Please take time to look at your names of interest. Then send me a note on what needs to be corrected. Due to the vast size of the census project, I will only correct spelling when it relates to your line. Also the 1850 census is at a point of production that could allow for posting. I hope to pick up on what was left off prior to updating the site. There has been quite a lot of work done. But the census needs to be completed. If those interested in this project could get in touch with me. Also if those folks who did not get a chance to finish what they said they would, Please get back on the saddle. I think we could get the 1850 census up on web site by Christmas this year. It could be a great present don't ya think. (No Pressure Here) Also, I don't recall a roll call lately. The roll call is one of the fastest ways one can locate family and make connections. I am sending this out to announce a roll call. The Roll Call will begin, Friday Aug 24, until Tuesday Aug 29. This will give the over 300 people on the list a chance to unsubscribe if they wish not to be a part. I hope that everyone would remember the Subject Line Statement in all post; this is mandatory in a roll call. Post during this time period should have the Statement (Roll Call) with Surname of Interest in the Subject Line. Multiple Surnames on the Subject Line are discouraged. You may send as many Roll Call e-mails as necessary. Subject Lines are mandatory. Do not put more then one surname in the Subject Line. I hope this will be a fun and productive list. Keeping in mind the nature of the topics, and the content posted to the Boards. Also posting information on the Boards concerning living people will not be allowed. If you have questions concerning this please send question to Jean Jones, Regional Coordinator or to me. You can always send a simple note asking what to do. Let's all have fun, share, and enjoy this new technology. To Anyone Who Can Assist: My gggrandfather was Jackson Ginn from Franklin Co. His wife I do not know. One sibling that I know, a son, my ggrandfather William Howell Ginn, b. in Franklin Co. married Lillian Brock Ginn from Walhalla Co., SC. What I'm trying to find out is whether or not there may be other siblings and if any fought in the War Between The States, especially Jackson Ginn or any brothers he may have had. If anyone has any information on this family, PLEASE let me hear from you. Also, if anyone purchased the Franklin Co., Ga. Civil War Soldier book, could you please look to see if there are any Jackson Ginn's or any other's. I would be most grateful for any assistance in this search. Best regards, E. Does anyone know the location of the Abraham Riley homeplace pictured on page 335 of the "History of Franklin County, Georgia" by the Franklin County Historical Society? Is the house still standing? In the same book, on page 638 it lists the Cross Roads Baptist Church Cemetery where Abraham Riley is buried. Thanks for any help. Frances Bailey Hall
There will be a revision of the Old Pendleton District SC Database cd in September. All open requests will be filled at that time. This is a project of the OPD Chapter of the SCGS. Additions are made continually. Downloads are updated monthly. The cd is currently revised about twice a year, dependent upon demand. OPD consisted of the three westernmost counties of SC, so was adjacent to a dozen modern SC, NC and GA counties. Map of the surrounding area showing modern counties in all 3 states: http://jrshelby.com/opdcd/opd.jpg For an excellent map of the district when it *was* a district see the SCROOTS 1820 Mills Atlas map at http://scroots.org/1825pendleton2.html or for a larger, clearer but slower loading version: http://scroots.org/1825pendleton3.html As of August, the database contained 275,000 names (ancestors, residents, descendents) and 93,000 marriages, and almost all of these are cousins somehow. For more info about the downloadable database, OPDC/SCGS, and the cd, see http://jrshelby.com/opdcd/ Note: this is a new address.
Joseph STRICKLAND was a resident of Franklin Co., GA when he participated in the 1805 GA Land Lottery. Has anyone identified this Joseph Strickland? I propose that this Joseph Strickland may be the son of Aaron Strickland (b.ca 1725), of Robeson Co., NC. Joseph Strickland was among the heirs of Aaron Strickland who sold his share of their father's land to Jacob Strickland in 1801 (Robeson Co., NC Deed Book M, p. 142). A Joseph Strickland is mentioned in 1808 as having 33 acres sold at auction for back taxes (Robeson Co., NC Deed Book P, pp. 236-237). Could it be this land was sold for back taxes because Joseph Strickland had abandoned his land, to settle in GA? It is felt that a later Joseph Strickland, born about 1786/1789 in NC, was a grandson of Aaron Strickland, of Robeson Co., NC. It would appear that the only son of Aaron Strickland to possibly be residing in northern GA during the first decade of the nineteenth century would be Joseph Strickland. Therefore, it would seem that the elder Joseph Strickland would be the best candidate for the younger Joseph's father. For the sake of clarity, I will refer to the elder Joseph Strickland, possibly the son of Aaron Strickland of Robeson Co., NC, as Joseph Strickland, Sr. I will refer to Joseph Strickland (b.ca 1786/1789), as Joseph Strickland, Jr. Joseph Strickland, Jr. was married to Mary "Polly" [Crow?] (b.ca 1793 in SC) about 1810/1811, possibly in Jackson Co., GA. It is believed that Polly was a sister of Martha "Patsy" Crow, the wife of Ervin Strickland, a possible brother of Joseph Strickland, Jr. Joseph Strickland, Jr. is found in Hall Co., GA in the 1820 Census. He is listed living adjacent to Richard Heath and Christiana Thomas. Interestingly, Richard Heath was married to Mourning HICKMAN, daughter of William and Lucretia (STRICKLAND) Hickman. Christiana Thomas was also a daughter of William and Lucretia (Strickland) Hickman. Joseph Strickland, Jr. remained in Hall Co., GA until his death in 1880. I continue to uncover information that adds one small piece of the puzzle at a time. Hopefully, one day it will provide a clear picture of Joseph Strickland's antecedents. Any comments are welcome. I know that Abel Howell (prob. son of Thomas Howell of Wilkes/Elbert) and Abel's wife Anna (dau. of Martin Deadwyler of Wilkes/Elbert) were in Franklin Co. in 1830. That much is known. From Franklin records I have HYPOTHESIZED the following: Abel had a brother named Patrick Howell. Abel and Anna had the following children: Jesse Howell who m. Lavinia; Annie Howell who ma 1818 William Jones in Franklin; Nancy Howell who m 1834 Alexander Powers in Franklin; Sarah Howell who m 1832 John Ray in Franklin. Can anyone substantiate or refute any or all of my hypothesis, or otherwise give me any scrap of information on these folks? Thanks for any help......Rozier

I am desperately looking for facts concerning Abraham Burton who married Hannah Cawthon in Franklin Co GA. In the 1850 census, Abraham Burton is listed with several small children and no wife. Then, Abraham left for Arkansas leaving several small children. He died in Ar in 1857 but I cannot find where in AR. I would like to find guardianship papers for the children or a proven fact of where in Ar he died. If anyone can help me it would be so appreciated. It is quite possible that Abraham is my gr-gr-gr-grandfather. I believe the Abraham in the 1850 census is my Abraham, I just need to connect him to the one that died in 1857 in Ar. and to the one who married Hannah Cawthon. Thank you for any help you could provide and happy hunting! Kim in Arkansas
