    3. Thomas Crews lived in the Franklin Co area as early as 1785 and moved from there about 1808 to Smith Co, Tennessee. A DAVID CREWS lived there at the same time and sold his land about 1808 but where did he go? Thomas Crews of Smith Co, Tenn gave his "friend" JAMES SMITH a Power or Attorney in Franklin Co to sell some land for him in 1809. Was James Smith related to him in any way? Also, Richard Cockerham bought Thomas Crews land in Franklin Co - was he related to him in any way?

    3. Bob, I am the person that was requesting that information. I do have the copy of "The History of Hart County" and will look into churches listed there. I understand Moses Sanders started the Nails Creek Church and please correct me if I'm wrong. I'm waiting on information from MERCER UNIVERSITY about some of that information and about some of the churches. I've been told by several that at first, most meetings/services were held in "meeting houses" and that the churches came later or should I say, they were built later. My focus is on ANY COUNTY that was once a part of WILKES,FRANKLIN, ELBERT or HART CO, GEORGIA and any MEETING HOUSES or FIRST CHURCHES, in these areas of GEORGIA. Thank you for sending me this information and to all of you that have done so off the list. Please feel free to post anything you might know or think you know onto the list as others may be looking for the same thing. If not, feel free to email me directly. No problem to me either way. Again, thanks to everyone. Warmest Regards, Gale Sanders ----Original Message Follows---- From: "Robert B. Laughon" <BLaughon@compuserve.com> To: GAFRANKL-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [GAFRANKL] Churches Date: Mon, 5 Mar 2001 09:54:36 -0500 Someone inquired about the oldest Baptist churches in Franklin, Hart, and a couple of other Georgia counties. Nails Creek Baptist Church was established on 11 Feb 1787 at Joseph Nail's trading post on the upper waters of Nails Creek, then in Franklin County but now in Banks County. That's pretty old, and only three years younger than the county itself. There may be older churches, however, since Franklin County was originally as large as present-day Rhode Island and has given up land to many other "daughter" counties, including two or three now in South Carolina. The book "History of Franklin County, Georgia" has articles about many of the churches, at least in present-day Franklin County, including lists of ministers who served early, but might not include churches that are now in other counties, especially those in South Carolina. There is a similar book "History of Hart County, Georgia" that I have seen but am less familiar with. I don't have a personal copy of either, or I would look the information up for you. These books are pretty widely distributed, however. 3. Gale - I saw the following today while following a Shirley connection: Shoal Creek Baptist Church is the oldest church in Hart Co. GA, being organized before 1798. The name SHIRLEY is listed among the names of those who formerly composted the membership. Unfortunately, the church burned down to the ground in the 1980's. They were unable to save anything but the bricks that were around the name plate. The bricks were given to the church members to remember the old building. ==================================================================== . You might want to look at this site: http://www.shirleyassociation.com/hart_co_ga.htm That's where this information came from. I'm looking for burial place of Jonathan Pearman and his family. Jonathan's mother was a Shirley. Of particular interest is his daughter Letitia Amanda Pearman, who married John Guest and went back home to live in the Johathan Pearman household (in Hart County - Shoal Creek area) after her husband John died in Civil War. Letty Amanda and her young son William are on the 1870 Hart County census living with Jonathan, but she disappears after that....probably buried in the Shoal Creek area, but I've not been able to verify this. Please keep me in mind if you see anything on this line. 3. Hey folks, a post I just received made me realize that I didn't specify which CHURCHES I was looking for. Since the ancestors that I AM aware of were all of the BAPTIST faith or they were BAPTIST preachers/ministers, I would think that those are the CHURCHES that I would be most interested in, at this point. Sorry for the omission on the previous post. 3. First of all, I am sending this query to several lists. I apologize now for any inconvenience you may have due to the fact that you are on several mailing lists and get duplicates of the following. Secondly, I need some help. I need to know the earliest churches that were in the WILKES CO, FRANKLIN CO, ELBERT CO, and HART CO, GEORGIA. If you know the names but nothing else, please let me know. If you only know the churches for one area, please feel free to email me. My goal is to get the names and to find when each of them came into exsistance. I am talking about the very first churches in each of these counties. Maybe some historians are reading this, and I would love to hear from you. If you know of some reference books with this information, I would like to know that also. Thanks so much. Several of her descendants, including me, have been doing some genealogical research, and I ran across your website today. I hope to visit Carnesville sometime in this year, as I really enjoy visiting places where my ancestors lived. If you know of any resources that might help me to locate her original home, I would really appreciate that very much. Nice website! 3. Hello, I'm posting again (to lists it might have happened on) in case my subject line wasn't clear enough the first time. Someone on the lists, I'm hoping it was this one, had an ancester that I think lived in FLORDIA. She was not able to get out and do any lookups. If you are that person, please email me again. If I remember correctly, you were wondering where that ancestor was born? Doesn't matter, if you and I talked, and I told you I would do something, just email me :) Thanks, Gale Sanders TEXAS _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

    2. Robert Richardson
    3. Anita and Gale - There is a book "Hebron Presbyterian Church" 1796-1996 published by the Hebron Historical Society in Banks County. The book can be obtained from the Historical Society. According to the book, the current church was built in 1884, but the history of the church goes back to 1796, not 1706. Again, according to the information in the book, the request from Presbyterians in Franklin County to Hopewell Presbytery to be organized into a congregation to be named Hebron is dated March 16, 1797. Are you sure of your dates? The book contains quite a listing of family genealogies of the members. The book contains an index of names and lists an Elias Andrew Sanders as being married to Jane Alice Gillespie (page 329). There is no other mention of Elias Sanders in the book. I know this is not a topic of the mailing list but as so many of you have access to a great many resources I was hoping someone could give me a lead or that you might have this information. Or, you might know where it is on the internet, short of me going to the ARCHIVES. I have already exhausted THE OLIVE TREE, IMMIGRANT SHIPS TRANSCRIBERS GUILD and others I can't quite think of right off the top of my head. What I'm looking for is a ship of the J&J COOKE shipping line, that sailed from Londonderry Ireland to Philadelphia Pennsylvania in 1847. I want to see the passenger lists if possible. Looking for Robert and Mary Hamilton, children, brother and sister. Thanks for any help.
