William A. Allen was in at least three units during the Civil war. He was appointed 3rd Sergeant of Co. I, 3rd Regiment of Ga. State Troops Oct 8th, 1861.That unit known as Forsyth county Wildcats was commanded by Capt Henry L. Cunningham.   Roll dated April 7th, 1862 last on file shows him present. Mustered out April 1862. Enlisted as a private in Co. G, 56th Regiment, Ga. Infantry May 3rd, 1862. Elected 2nd Lieutnant Dec 15th, 1862. Wounded in left eye, resulting in loss of sight at Vicksburg, Miss. on June 15th, 1863. He was captured on July 4th 1863 and remained a prisoner of war until July 11th 1863 when he was paroled. Elected 1st Lieutnant Feb 1864. (After fighting in the siege of Vicksburg, he fought in the Atlanta Campaign. After the war when he was taken to the Cyclorama for the first time, he fainted it was so realistic.)
