Talking about books brought to mind the first genealogy book anyone ever gave me. It was about 30 years and Mr. Marion Kiser, a member of the Historical Society gave me the book. He said "to show how much he appreciated my hard work". This was the book. LC Control Number: 72192737 Type of Material: Book (Print, Microform, Electronic, etc.) Brief Description: Starr, Emmet. Old Cherokee families: "old families and their genealogy." With a comprehensive index compiled by J. J. Hill. 2d ed. Norman, University of Oklahoma Foundation, 1972. 303-476, 94 p. illus. 28 cm. It was a big help with the Forsyth Cherokee Families although I soon realized how much wasn't there. This material is now online at http://www.accessgenealogy.com/native/starrgen/index.htm (not my page) Later I learned that Emmett Starr was helped in the Hightower area by May Taylor's father and May gave her father's copy of the book to Forest Wade. Apparently May used to entertain the young ones after church out on the lawn with tales from the book and her father. Mr. Kiser's family sheet was the first one I ran when I was doing the Historical Society newsletter in the 70s. I have some correspondence in my files with Mr. Hill's secretary at the time and I realize how new I was and how poorly I asked my questions. A little later, Garland Bagley lent me his copy of this book which has much more material. LC Control Number: 78189676 Type of Material: Book (Print, Microform, Electronic, etc.) Brief Description: Bell, George Morrison, 1901- Genealogy of "old & new Cherokee Indian families." [1st ed. Bartlesville, Okla., 1972] 567 p. illus. 24 cm. Mr. Bell was a very nice man. I wished I could have afforded one of his books. It was really good. It had George Welch's family among others. George Welch of Forsyth County was one of the signers of the treaty trading the Cherokee land in the East for land west of Arkansas. On the Microfilm rolls of the Cherokee letters, I found where George Welch asked the government for protection as someone had tried to ambush him. Donna
