I was just informed that the Cool Springs Cemetery adjacent to the Lake Forest subdivision has centerline road stakes going up into the cemetery. Is this correct? How can Forsyth County allow graves to be desecrated in such a manner as to be paved over for a new subdivision road? This is very bad planning on someone's part and I trust will not be allowed to happen. Just because graves are marked with field stones does not mean that they are abandoned. I am quite positive that all of those graves are still quite occupied. When those persons died, they believed that they would have eternal peace, not a roadbed going over their bones, desecrating their memories. My family were original settlers in that are (Forsyth and Milton Counties). Numerous graves in my family still remain unmarked to this day. They paid with their sweat and lives to help Forsyth County progress into what it has became today. Those buried there and the family deserve better than this. It is an outrage and shall not be allowed. Ron Self "The best way to make your dreams come true is to wake up and do something about them"
I quote from an email I received. "Now the Lake Forest subdivision has centerline road stakes going up into the cemetery." Most of these graves are unmarked except by field rocks but it has been there a long time. I have notified the PR person for the county - Bill Johnson. brjohnson@forsythco.com If you would like to help and have more information about those buried there except the Monroes please send an email to this list and/or Bill Johnson. Wanda Collins, Program Chairman for the Historical Society of Forsyth County has kindly invited me to speak at the September meeting. The Society meets the 1st Tuesday of each month at the Library. That would be Sept. 3, 2002. The day after Labor Day. If you are in the area, you are welcome to attend. The topic will be "Researching in Forsyth" and will be stories about my 32 years of researching in Forsyth rather than actual "how to". Some of the stories that come to mind are "The day I spent with Forest Wade and Georgia Camera" "Looking at Gold treasure Signs with Broughton Wallace" subtopic "Why the judge was late to my daughters wedding" "Going with Garland Bagley to photgraph a fish trap" "The old Indian Ghost on Highway 20" "Mrs. Ellene Kemp and the Silver Waybill" "J. C. Gazaway comes to douse my well" "The Saddle Rock below the Dam" "The Gold Mines" "Anne Ferguson and Forest Wade and ............" "Miss Leona Hughes and the Carruths" "Hunting the civil war veterans that lived past 1940 for Prof. Hoar" "Freddie Stokley and the Belgian Camera crew" Now you can see I am already overtime, so you will just have to come to find out which ones I tell. Ok and thanks this gives me a bit more Ok the Margaret Casey and Hicks are mine. But she is too old to appear by name with her parents. When she is with her parents she is hidden and only shows up as a little talley mark. She is shown by name with Hicks Martin as his wife for the first time in her life on a record on the 1850 in #819 age 28 f b. GA according to what you have placed online here for her. So this disproves the fact that she was born in Spartanburg SC it would seem. Perhaps her Father was born there instead and that is how that mistake occured. Bless you as I did not have this 1850 information yet. So if she is 28 in 1850 that places her birth at 1822 and in GA so they must have came in or about 1822 for her to show as born in GA perhaps they just missed out on the census at the time. or where living in the household of someone else at that time. Thanks a ton for your help. I have put what I know about Isaac Casey Online. http://www.rootsweb.com/~gaforsyt/records/families/casey.html Donna
Dear Dona Parrish: Perhaps you can help me out a bit. What if anything can you tell me about the family of Isaac Casey and Dicy who appear in Forsyth Co. Ga early on. Did they have a daughter at any time that you know of that they named Margaret Casey who grew up there and later married Hicks Martin my GGGrandfather? I am trying to place Margaret with some parents. In a book on my GGGrandfathers line it states that she was the believed to be child of Isaac and Dicy Casey. That is all that I have to go on at this point. Oh and they are both buried in Mt. Zion GA over in Carroll Co. on the GA and AL line. Thanks a ton for any tid bit that you may be able to offer to me. I appreciate the advice from Jonelle Ellis Russell on copyrights. I forget that everyone is not familiar with Hiram Parks Bell 9 Jan. 1827 to 16 Aug. 1907 Confederate Soldier Congressman Georgia Statesman He was one of two delagates from Forsyth County at the Georgia Secession Convention. There is a biography online on the SCV page. http://members.tripod.com/hpbell/bellbio.html His book is in the public domain. As far as my newspaper columns go, I retained the copyright to my articles as I did to the articles I wrote for genealogical quarterlies in the 70s. If any of you are not familiar with me, I have been working on Forsyth County history since 1970. Besides the books that I hold the copyright on, I have many many records in my files that are either original work by me or files that were given to me with permission to share. If occasionally you are reading a book or article on Forsyth and you see material that is similar to mine remember that I have worked and shared with many people in the past. I wrote and/or shared some of the material that appears in other peoples' books on Forsyth County. Donna Parrish
Donna, I'm looking forward to reading your columns and since it appears you are the author there should be no copyright issues involved. There may be a copyright problem with posting the chapters from a book. Depending upon the publication date, you may need written consent of the publisher and author. "Unattributed use of another's intellectual work is plagiarism." I have talked with individuals and organizations who are very concerned and some very upset that their work has been copied and posted on the net. I recommend we all visti <http://www.ngsgenealogy.org/> from time to time and read through "Genealogical Standards" and when posting information on the internet carefully adhere to the "Standards for Sharing Information with Others." The NGS standards were written to promote accurate and high quality genealogical information for future generations. Also, I caution all of us that unauthorized posting material published by other could lead to legal problems. . Alway presume information posted on a website has copyright protection, Unless we have permission from the originator of print or electronic information, it is best not to reprint. We should remember to ALWAYS credit our source. Annette Bramblett has been busy typing and has sent me the disks with all of my "Heritage Sharing" newspaper columns from the 70s typed. (That's 1970 - I'm not thattt.. old.) Also she has sent several chapters of Hiram Parks Bell's Book "Men and Things". There is also an article about the gazebo on the Courthouse lawn with a picture. I will try to get them online by the weekend. Donna
Can someone out there tell me any thing more about the families of Isaac Casey and Dicy his wife seen on both the 1840 and 1850 US Census of Forsyth Co. Ga? Gail
