Regards, Leo lwlittle@yahoo.com STRICKLAND (aka Little Terry) CEMETERY (Shakerag, Forsyth County, Georgia, 1994) Contributed by Ted 0. Brooke The Cemetery is located in extreme southeastern Forsyth County. Directions: From intersection of McGinnis Ferry Road and Kemp Road, go north on Kemp road about 200 yards to cemetery site on right (east) side of road. This cemetery is about one acre, mostly fenced, in the edge of a pasture. There is evidence of several dozen additional unmarked graves and, as of this date, there are some 18 small white "Flags" sticking randomly in the ground throughout this cemetery, whose meaning is unknown to me. Surveyed 20 February 1994 by Ted 0. Brooke. Note: This cemetery has been surveyed and published three times, with varying degrees of accuracy and completeness. It is identified as "Shakerag" (called "Little" or "Terry') in Cemeteries of Forsyth County Georgia, page [34 135; as "Strickland Cemetery" in Cemetery Records, Atlanta and Vicinity volume 4 pages 263 264 (recorded 1941); as two cemeteries, "Strickland Family Cemetery" and Unknown", in the Georgia Genealogist, County Records Forsyth County Cemeteries, pages 86 87, which was a very incomplete listing and where it is noted "could it be a part of the Shakerag Church"? Several early death certificates identify this as the Terry family cemetery and it is known to current residents as the Strickland family cemetery. The earliest burials here were in the Little, Terry and Strickland families. She is the lady who alerted us to the problem there. Here are excerpts from her Email: ----------------------------------- Friday I met with one of the people in charge of the development and the archeologist. We walked the cemetery and they are going to start Wednesday on a well laid approach to survey for the graves and graveyard boundaries. I was welcomed to be there to watch and so I shall. The developer also found a pile of old bricks next to the graveyard under 2 large trees. He and the archeologist were wondering if in fact the church was there and someone had just dozed the foundation in a pile. They are under a layer of grass. So, everything is seems to be going well now and I will keep you informed on any big developments. --------------------------------- We want Emily to know that we appreciate her efforts. I also want to thank Bill Johnson, PR officer of Forsyth County for his major assistance. I put Mr. Johnson on the accept list so that he can post to this list if there is any History information he wants to share with us. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Eaton Chastain Jackson Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/Ec.2ADI/1266 Message Board Post: James H. Eaton was born 1824 and married Mary E. Jackson in 1846. He was part of Company I of the Cherokee Legion (aka Pickens Raid Repellers) during the War of Northern Agression (aka "Civil" war) and is buried in Hinton GA (Pickens County). He was from Forsyth county, near Cumming, prior to moving to the Hinton area (Pickens County)where he is buried. I have no link to his father, although it *may* be Reuben Eaton of Forsyth County. I am also searching for any information on the ancestry of his wife, Mary Jackson. I know her family was from South Carolina, but need ancestry info on her as well. According to family stories, she was related to Stonewall Jackson. Joseph Chastain, father of Sara E Chastain, is another Pickens County dead end for me. Any help would be greatly appreciated.I *think* his father may be Reubin Eaton, but have no proof. Any help would be appreciated. I've been trying to track down this link for five years now. Daniel
According to her daughter's birth certificate, GRACE EUGENIA HUTCHINGS was born April 1865 in Cumming, Forsyth County, Georgia. A 1900 census listing also lists her parents as coming from Georgia. Other than that I have no other information about her family in Georgia. I would certainly appreciate hearing from anyone who knew of a Hutchins/Hutchings family in Georgia between 1865-1880 with a daughter named Grace. Grace married ISAAC WHITE MARLOW 29 March 1882 in Callahan County, Texas, son of THOMAS MARLOW and PROFANES WHITE. He was born 07 November 1859 in Jacksboro, Campbell, Tennessee, and died 03 September 1948 in LaFollette, Campbell, Tennessee.
