My greataunt lives in Canton, GA. When I started my research in 1999 I spoke with her. She asked how far back I wanted to trace the family and I said as far as possible. She then said that I might have a problem because it had been passed down that the Fowlers were originally Bartons. I later heard from other researchers about the Revolutionary War part. I think that the Fowler in question would have been the father of William and James. James was born in 1797 and William in 1803 so they would not have been born yet. You are the first descendant of William that I have heard mention this rumor. Several lines of James Fowler's family has heard the rumor passed down in one form or another. I would love to find some info on the parents of William and James. I also heard from a researcher last week that possibly a 3rd brother was in Cherokee Co. There is a Thomas Fowler that lives next door to William in 1870. I haven't looked into this yet but I plan to do so soon. Thanks, Tracey
While you all are discussing the Fowler surname, I wonder if there is any one out there who knows of the Fowlers I have attached to my Smith family from the area. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Ec.2ADI/1307.2 Message Board Post: Thanks for the documented proof that William Marcus Fowler was the brother of James Fowler. I stated my interest in genealogy from conversations with a friend who was kin to James Fowler, almost 10 years ago. I knew that the Fowlers were buried at Hightower Baptist Church from my grandmother Ether (nee Edwards)Howard and her mother, Lena Gertrude (nee Fowler) Edwards. William Marcus Fowler was the grandfather of Lena. When I started checking and determined that the both William and James were from the Hightower area of Cherokee Co., Ga., I knew that there was a definite relationship between these two men. Your information is the first proof that members of both families claimed kinship. I'm now interested to know about their parents. I had read where William was not actually a Fowler. That he was born a Barton, but after the Revolutionary War, found his family had either left or had been killed. He then lived with a neighbor family named Fowler and took thier name. ! The fact that he had a brother makes it less likely that this story true, unless they both served during the War at the same time and something happened to the remainder of their family that prevented them for finding them. Also in case you do not know, James and Sarah Fowler were founders of New Harmony Baptist Church in Forsyth Co., Ga. Keep up the good work. Maybe the next time you are at the archives, you can see if there is any Revolutionary War records on James or William.

Tracey, Robert - Do either of you have info on a Sarah Fowler, married to a Josiah Thornton, in the 1700s? The only info that I have (on Sarah) is that they had a son named Thomas, who married a Rebecca House. Thomas and Rebecca's daughter, Ellander Thornton, born Feb. 19, 1819, was the first wife of my g-g-g grandfather, James Milford, sherriff of Forsyth County in the civil war days. Thank you Marvin & Donna for the info on the DD 214. I knew the list would come thru. I believe that my Dad was wounded once, probably twice while serving in the 2nd world war. I think he was awarded two purple hearts. He was in the 41st Armored Infantry Regt(Hell on Wheels). . I believe he was in the Sicily Campaign and I believe he was in North Africa. I imagine he had many other decorations but I don't know how to prove it. His military records were burned in a fire at the Military archives in St Louis. It has taken me two years to get even that much from St Louis. I do have his social security number and military service number. He received a disability check from the VA and had insurance which he maintained until his death. He received care numerous times in the Doraville VA hosp. His 2nd wife applied and got a VA marker for his grave. Let's hear from some others about your ancestors in past wars. This is a time to show support for our military men & women. Regardless of what our politics are, they deserve our very best. My father was Robert Anderson, known in Forsyth county as J.W. I am proud to be an american. Sam Anderson

Sam. My Dad entered the service in WWII from Jacksonville, FL. When he got out, we went to Gainesville, Alachua County, FL and he recorded his discharge there. When we moved to GA, I don't know if he recorded it in DeKalb Co., but when we moved to Forsyth Co., he recorded it with the Clerk of Superior Court. The address and phone number is on this page. http://www.rootsweb.com/~gaforsyt/gagen/ Donna
It has been common practice for years that people being released from active duty, record their 214 at the county court house so it will be available. My father, Robert(J.W.) Can anyone give me the address and phone number of the office at Forsyth county courthouse which maintains. the reports of seperation? Thanks. Sam

Dear Ron, In Referance to Your WILLIAM Stone.I am also Trying to See Where a James Stone Fit In (Maybe With Your Family)..That Came Out Of Upper Georgia, and Eventually went Into Jackson County,Ga and Married Circa 1821 one Elizabeth Pinion. If You Run Into a Panell or Pinion on Your Lines,I would Be Very Interested in Talking to You. Respectfully,HerLine2@aol.com Richard
Hi Richard, We did have a James Stone. On Donna's site for Forsyth is the 1850 census among others, and our family unit at that time was: Wiley and Candas, parents Wesley James Francis Asbury Wm Pitchford (ggf) next door, married to Ben Wilson , was their older sis, Elender We know that Francis A and Wm P served in the 28th Alabama Inf. We know James and Wesley also served in the CSA but not for sure just where. When all was over, the Stones moved to AR. Wiley and James and Francis are found in Boone Co in 1870. Wm is in Searcy. In 1880, our James is married to Harriett and living in Boone Co, AR still. Can't find him in 1900. As I recall he had a son named Henry, but I can't find his family group just now when I would like to put it down for you. An earlier genealogist in our family had a note on his work that James had committed suicide in AR. If so it would have to have happened after 1880. The big hole that the 1890 census loss created hits just at the wrong time again. Before gggf Wiley, who was born about 1803 in SC, probably Greenville area, we think the James Stone who was old enough to be his father and lived nearby in Forsyth (1850) and in Milton(1860) WAS his father. He seems to trace back to SC to a father named William himself. I don't have a wife's name for the James we think is Wiley's dad. It looks like we might connect to the Stones in early VA if we keep digging. I hope this is of some help to you. ron At 09:52 PM 3/1/03 EST, you wrote: >Dear Ron, > > In Referance to Your WILLIAM Stone.I am also Trying to See Where a James >Stone Fit In (Maybe With Your Family)..That Came Out Of Upper Georgia, and >Eventually went Into Jackson County,Ga and Married Circa 1821 one Elizabeth >Pinion. If You Run Into a Panell or Pinion on Your Lines,I would Be Very >Interested in Talking to You. > > >Respectfully,HerLine2@aol.com Richard > > >==== GAFORSYT Mailing List ==== >Forsyth County Georgia History and Records >http://www.rootsweb.com/~gaforsyt/ > >

Just because someone doesn't have a marked stone in the Cemetery book, it does not mean they were not buried there. They may be in an unmarked grave. There may have been stones placed after the cemetery was copied and/or published. I personally helped with some veteran stones after the family realized there was no stone there. Donna
That sure is the truth about unmarked graves, Donna. My Forsyth born great grand dad Wm. P. Stone, finally got his veteran's stone dedicated in Oct. 2000, after running in circles looking for his grave where the obit said it was, but the keeper of records was too careless to REALLY look. I had the good fortune to be assisted by a lady with a mission to find CSA graves in Oregon . ron At 12:15 PM 3/1/03 EST, you wrote: >Just because someone doesn't have a marked stone in the Cemetery book, it >does not mean they were not buried there. >They may be in an unmarked grave. > >There may have been stones placed after the cemetery was copied and/or >published. You have to be a subscriber to post, would you like me to subscribe you? It is not Beaver Run, it is Beaver Ruin. It is not near Buford Dam, it is north of Pilgrim Mill Road which is Exit 16 off Hwy 400. It is in the Buford Dam map. Beaver Ruin Cemetery is already online in the form of a scan of a copyrighted book. http://donnaparrish.com/cemetery/page004.html For more on the location of Beaver Ruin, see Forsyth County, Georgia History and Records http://www.rootsweb.com/~gaforsyt/ Click on cemetery.
