As I recall, Lake Lanier started fillng about 1950 and I also recall it took a long time to fill up - like several years. The cemeteries were being moved in the late forties and on into the fifties (as I recall) ahead of the rising water. -----Original Message----- From: Dan and Dorothy Jones <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Saturday, September 11, 1999 9:22 PM Subject: Re: [GAFORSYT-L] SALEM BAPT.CEMETERY >Kathy at [email protected] wrote: > >>Hi >> >>When I went to the Georgia Archives in Atlanta there was a file >>on the graves that were moved when Lake Lanier was filled >> >>Kathy > >Thank you Kathy. 1896 - 1896 Don't neglect the family What are you doing in the way of teaching your children. Bible truths? They are dependent on you for instruction. Had you better get some help on this line? As you perhaps think you haven't time to teach , or we haven't the information to give them they need? Their minds are active and will be engaged in some kind of work. Then take a good religious paper that will encourage them in good works and enable them to know the truth and by knowing the truth they are made free. Take the Baptist Leader for 1896. Doesn't sound too old fashioned does it - sales pitch and all. This is the ad that ran next to Miles Garrett's Obituary. My photocopy is fading badly or I would scan it to a page. Donna.
If the graves were marked, they moved the tombstones. Those moved to Forsyth County appear in my Forsyth cemetery book and those moved to Hall Co are in Sybil McRay's Cemeteries of Hall County. Let me point out that they didn't specify in the graveyard which graves they had moved. For example and I quote from my book p. 8 Bethel Church: "Site C "5 graves moved in 1956 from Nuckolls Cemetery within Buford Dam and Reserve project" Erected by Corps of Engineers - U. S. Army. This stone was close to 5 Bryant graves. However some were just there, not able to tie them to a particular grave. However under the law, to move these graves, they had to make an effort to locate a family member and ask where they wanted them put. There should be some documentation in their files as to how they found a family member. I was told that after a number of years, the reords were moved to Mobile, AL. There is a web page for the Corps of Engineers and they answered my email although it was not about cemeteries. Donna
I just posted this message to the Garrett Genforum page, but I thought searchers here might like to see it. "I am not related to these Garretts, but I have a stray note in my file from Forsyth County, Georgia Deed Books that in Book B page 441, Lafayette Co. Miss 16 Nov 1860 the children of Thomas T. Garrett appointed Richard P. Lester (a lawyer) power of attorney in the estate of Thomas T. Garrett deceased of the County of Independence Satae of Arkansas - property now in the hands of Martin Graham. Children: Thomas L. Garrett Rebecca A. Garrett Roe Henderson (husbsnd of T. A.formerly T. A. Garrett) Lissah A. (not sure if this is a Henderson or a Garrett."
>From Irene: May 10, 1973 Years ago, my grandfather told me that Daniel's father was Miles Garrett and Miles' wife must have been named Susan and that she was called Sukey. A few years before Grandpa died he wasn't too sure about who Daniel's father was but he knew there was a Miles in there close someway. One of my Aunts says Miles was Daniel's father, and so did this gr. dau. of Hendrix. Grandpa said Daniel came to Georgia from Anderson Courthouse SC when his son John S. was just a tad of a boy and that Daniel was married three times. 1st to a Miss Stewart (or Stuart) and that she was the mother of Hendrix, John S. and maybe some of the others. 2nd wife: Emilee Jones (called Milly) and 3rd wife: ........Charity Ellison....... I will have to admit that I never heard of old Salem but churches have moved around. Does anyone with the Salem Church minutes remember anything about them moving the Church or opening another graveyard? Daniel Garrett's Will appears on the Forsyth county genweb page - Wills aka http://www.rootsweb.com/~gaforsyt/wills.htm. It was signed 13 June 1869 and probated 6 May 1872 . TheForsyth page doesn't show the witnesses who were R. F. Douglas, B. F. Douglas, Phillip Johnson and James T. Douglass. Executors were Jno S. Garrett and "my friend" Hiram G. Henson. Charity was Daniel's 2nd wife that he married 12th Sep 1864. >From Irene's letters in the 1970's.: Daniel's children given by Grandpa, but I have added the dates as I found them. Hendrix born about 1813 md Louisa or Louvisa Foster in Forsyth Co 9/30/1841. John S. Garrett b. 14 Oct 1818 SC d. 16 Jun 1900 md Elizabeth Bennett. 11 Jan 1840 . Both buried at Salem. Satiriah Garrett called Aunt Tiery married Allen Powell 4/2/1842. She did not live long after her marriage, but the Mary Powell mentioned in Daniel's Will is her daughter. I think it was this same Allen Powell who married Easter Bennett 25 Jan 1847. They lived in Cherokee or Cobb Co. Jeptha M. Garrett md Susanah Stovall 21 Jan 1849. They are supposed to have moved to Tyler, Texas and died there. The 1850 census of Forsyth gave Jeptha living in the household of Mary Stovall, but did not have Susannah listed. A son they called Uncle Zayery never married, died in Stockton Calif . An uncle of mine said his name was Isaiah and they just called him Zayery. Mourning Evaline Garrett married Jasper Green and they moved to Arkansas. Daniel Newman Garrett. md Eliza A. Smith 6/20/1886. still Irene's letter---From the census, it looks like Daniel might have had one more daughter - had 2 girls und 10 in 1820 and in 1830 only one in this age group. Donna
My James Anderson's wife's name was Calinder G. James. I have hit a dead end with those two. With a name like Calinder, you would think she could be found. Sam
Donna, when you have time would you check the 1863 Militia enrollment for James Anderson. If he is listed, please tell me everything that it says.Thanks. Sam Anderson
Hi When I went to the Georgia Archives in Atlanta there was a file on the graves that were moved when Lake Lanier was filled Kathy
Well - it is possible - that the OLD cemetery is now under Lake Lanier. Donna could perhaps have some info. The records on reinternments, as I understand it, are now in the Corp of Engr office in Mobile AL. My grandfather was James Anderson Lindsay Was named after a cousin of his mother Georgia Denham. I was told my Georgia's granddaughter that Elizabeth was James's Wife but then she said Elizabeth may have been his sister. James Anderson Lindsay Was the grandson of Anderson Lindsay and Mary Ann Cruse of Forsyth Co. Thomas H. Lindsay
I have reorganized my webpage and there may be some trouble with the links. I added all my pages to hometown.aol.com which inceased my space to 12mb. It is supposed to interchange with members.aol.com, but if it doesn't let me know. Also, when I started my screenname was MFLP (my initials). Now some have been converted to mflp(not by me) and some haven't. Be sure to hit refresh. I have been able to get all the links to work for me except surnames and donna from the bottom of sources. Donna isn't uploaded yet and I am still working on surnames. It works from the main page, but not the source page. Will keep trying. I appreciate everyone following the pattern for Lookups. It sure has made it easier on me. Thanks Donna
Sam Would your James Anderson have been a POW that escaped. The Wife of the James I am looking for was named Elizabeth. Thomas H. Lindsay

Sam, The "Bagley look" that is in my husband's family is there!!! I have found a lot of very distant cousins that have a strong resemblence to each other. If you lived in Sharon, you may know Ralph Bagley and his son, Wayne. They are two of the Bagleys that I met at a Family reunion at Sharon Baptist Church a few years ago. Do you know if they still have the reunions there? I haven't gotten a notice in quite a while.
