According to information sent to me by Ben Garrett, Daniel's father is a Thomas Garrett, not Miles. Here is what he sent: Descendants of Thomas L. Garrett Generation No. 1 1. THOMAS L.1 GARRETT1 was born Abt. 1775 in SC2,3,4. He married TABITHA. Notes for THOMAS L. GARRETT: In the information sent by BenGarrett @ emailmsn.com listed the following ancestors, but no information. I am assuming that it is not proven. Robert> John> John I.> John> William Garrett (Sir Knight). Last year I downloaded two Garrett gedcoms that contain a lot of this same information. Will be very useful if I ever connect. She then state that Milly is the same as Charity Jones, 3rd wife of Daniel A. Notes for MARY ANN HAWES: Dirty Laundry as per Sharon Bennett Williams - "Daniel's second wife was Mary. I believe that the Nancy and Jeptha living with Mary Stovall in 1850 were her children by Danile A." [This is not proven] THIS DOES NOT WORK WITH DATES I HAVE FOR THE CHILDREN. The Nancy she speaks of married Gabriel Owen and had 2 sons. she is living with her mother in 1850, being a widow. Jeptha living with this family and Mary is a Stover with no husband but other Stovall children listed ages 18-8 yrs. With age of Stovall children, she would have been married to Stovall 1832-1842. Date for her marriage to Daniel Garrett is 1842. so how can this work for her to be Jeptha's Mom??? Hi Tracy. These are the only Venables I have now. I'm looking for more. Hope we connect. >From 1850 Forsyth Co Ga census Sanford Venable b abt 1825 +Adeline Bagley 1825-6/25/1910 Richard T Venable b 1849 Evaline Venable b 1850-1859? +Augustus L Glover (my gg-grandparents) Sanford died before 1859 and Adeline married Joshua Buice 1859. I am trying to verify the parents of Augustus L who married Evaline. In 1850 Forsyth Co Ga census Sanford Venable and Adeline are in the same household as Augustus L Glover and Evaline Bagley Glover, Adeline's sister. I thought that Augustus L and Evaline Bagley were the parents of my Augustus L. Now I think the parents of my Augustus L are Wiley Glover and Agnes Bagley, sister of Evaline and Adeline. So my Augustus L Glover and Evaline Venable would be 1st cousins if I am correct. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Pat
Billie, I now live in Wisconsin, so I no longer can get to the libraries to check on this information. Do you live in GA. near Forsyth and Hall Counties? If so go to the local Libraries in their reference section they'll have a huge book of cemeteries it appears that the cemetery's are listed in the books only by county(I used the Gwinnett Co library and only found my family in Gwinnett Co.). Look for the surnames and you should find all the information you need on anyone.(I found spouses, children and parents for my families). If you don't live in GA. I'll be glad to do I look up when I visit but I won't be in GA before Dec. My Garrett ancestors owned land on the banks of the River, part in Forsyth and part in Hall Co. that was flooded by the River. I would be interested if any Garretts /Bennetts were left under the waters of Lake Lanier. My John S. GARRETT is buried at Old Salem Church Cem., Cumming, Ga. Forsyth Co. There may be others who were moved that are buried there. I do not know where his wife Elizabeth "Betsy" BENNETT b. 6 Sept 1819 - d. 30 Dec. 1902 is buried. We still don't have a DAR chapter in Forsyth Co. The only WPA records I have been able to find are interviews of former slave families. I know many of our people are DAR connected but I don't have those records.
Garrett Searchers Please Read This Whole Letter The Miles Garrett whose obituary I mentioned is not the father of Daniel. I know that - I found that in the old newspapers not from Irene. The note on the p of atty, I found in Forsyth Co. Deeds myself. Supposedly Miles (Mary Jane Sears) was the son of Nicholas. Miles cousin - John Garrett ( Mamicy Owings) also came to Forsyth Co. Daniel, Thomas, Asa and Wells were all on the 1820 Hall Co, 1830 Hall Co and 1840 Forsyth Co. That's in another of Irene's 1970's letters. I just thought that since Irene was born before 1900 and asked her grandpa about it that you might enjoy any new imput you could gain from her letter. So far I have been told to document! I did. My source was a letter from Irene. That's as good as your "somebody sent me" or "this was on the web". I will wade through all this stuff you sent me and see how documented it is, but Irene's letter still says what it said. I can't correct her letter- she died about 1980-81, but please remember she was picky as the devil about proving her lines. The letter was what her family told her that she was trying to reconcile with what she could prove. A "any suggestions letter". With all your charts - can you figure out who was Irene's grandpa? She's decended from the Salem Garretts - also from Eliza Wofford Wallis. Have fun. Donna
Salem Church is on Highway 306 between the intersections of 306 & 369 and 306&53. It will be on the northwest side of the road. Donna
I hit reply and it sent the mail to the individual, not the list. The two earlier ones went to the list. If you are hitting reply and want it posted please check the Send To: box. Subj: Re: [GAFORSYT-L] Lake Lanier/Garretts/Bennetts Date: 9/13/99 To: [email protected] I'm sorry -----my book was copyrighted 1981 and are now out of print. It is available on inter library loan. It has been pointed out that in quoting Irene's letter I typed the date as 11 Jan 1840. I'm sorry - that's what she said. I will refer you to Marriage Book A p.84 where the date is given as 16 Jan 1840. Any doubts, the original is available on a microfilm copy at the Probate Court Forsyth County. The original Book A and Book B were under the cabinet in the Probate Court when the courthouse burned in the early 1970's. They were scheduled to leave that day for the Archives in Atlanta to be rebound. Joyce and I tried to retrieve them the next day, but were stopped by the Fire Marshal who said it was unsafe. They said they would retrieve them for us, but they bulldozed them instead. Donna
Tracy- I wrote the "Cemeteries of Forsyth County, Georgia" book. I do have a copy. Donna Sybil McRay wrote the Hall County Book. I do not have a copy of it, I lent it and it didn't come back. If someone will post a reasonable request to the Hall genweb page, I am sure someone will answer. I will not answer requests like send me all the Bagley's in Forsyth County.
John S. and Elizabeth Garrett are both buried at Salem Church Cemetery. There is no marker close indicating they were moved. Why do you call it Old Salem Church? Donna
A Martha J. Henderson md William A. Robbs 6 July 1868 Book D page 50. This is a 8 years past your time frame, but the only Martha J. I have. All the recorded Forsyth marriages I have should be posted on the Forsyth Genweb page. They can be accessed from http://hometown.aol.com/mflp/fcmarr.html. Be sure and look at the http://hometown.aol.com/mflp/mathis.htm page I just updated. It has a William Robbs on it. Be sure and refresh. Donna
Forsyth County started in 1832. Our records basically begin in 1833. Can you be more specific as to when they were in Forsyth County GA. Donna
Daniel, I ran the obit in one of my newspaper columns in the late 70s and gave it to Don and I think he used it in his book, but I am hunting the typed copy so I can scan and not retype.Briefly, Miles Garrett died 25 Feb 1896 in Hopkens Co. TX. born 1806, nearly 90. Born SC. moved to Forsyth in 1856. went to Texas in 1878. married twice. 14 children, 7 prededed him in death (no names). That is all it says of a genealogical nature. The rest is about character , his politics, etc. >From me: He was on the 1850 Greenville Co SC census with Jane, on the 1860 census Forsyth with Margaret M.. Apparently the son of Nicholas Ware Garrett and Sarah (Bramblett by tradition). Nicholas Ware Garrett line appears in a book by Corine Putnam Mehringer of Chicago Illinois 1958. I borrowed Irene's copy of the book back then and returned it. They still mention it on the Garrett Genforum page. Will work on it Donna
Dan and anyone else interested in the graves that were moved or not moved before Lake Lanier was filled. Gale, Last week while on business travel I had a couple of hours one evening to visit the Rutgers University Lib. They have a Special Collections area which contains their genealogical Lib. and it is filled with unpublished and one of a kind genealogical materials. So should you make a connection to New Jersey, which is the ONLY geographical area covered by the lib, this special collections has got to be the place to spend some time. I am trying to find any information before the 1800's on the families of Elias SANDERS b 1775 and Mary CARTER b 1775. Mary Carter's father was supposed to be Thomas CARTER, no information on him. Some say he and a brother may have come from NEW JERSEY. gale brown
