My family has been in Elbert County Georgia since at least 1807/08 when Elias SANDERS was given land. He married Mary Carter and all info shows their birthdates as 1775. I can't find Elias' parents or sibs/cuz/uncles/etc.....and the book states he was "thought" to have come from Maryland but again, "cousins" from one of his many children have written me stating they thought he came from NC. Elias Sanders b abt 1775, married Mary Carter b abt 1775 she is thought to be the daughter of Thomas Carter who fought in the REV WAR. Together they had the following children: 1. Elias Sanders Jr b 1/1797 m Julia Vickery 2. Mary b 1800 m James Vickery 3. Thomas "Kit" b 1801 m Isabella Trotman (Totman) b abt 1810. 4. Calvin P b abt 1803 m Sarah Miller 5. Lewis Manley b abt 1804 m Prudence Miller 6. Samuel B b 1808 m Annie Skelton 7. Jonathan P b abt 1812 m Orpha Miller 8. Patience b 1/1818 m Joseph Hightower Vickery(1) and John Smith(2) 9. Rachel m Joel Dyar A cousin from Hartwell Georgia recently paid me a visit and was giving me as much info has he had and I was told that there are SANDERS' still living on the original land that belonged to Elias SANDERS. -- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, September 19, 1999 9:38 AM Subject: Re: [GAFORSYT-L] SANDERS/CARTER lookups > Does Elias ever appear on the Elbert County Census? > If so when did he disappear from there? > > > ==== GAFORSYT Mailing List ==== > =======================Forsyth County Georgia======================= > Did you know? I have added material from Dan and Lorene into the timeline, plus census info. I think what we need to know now- Is there an administration or probate in SC (Greenville District) in which Sukey is the wife? Who was Daniel's first wife and the mother of Hendrix and John S. that all our searchers seem to descend from? Donna
My question is - if they were in Elbert County, what do you want me to look up in Forsyth County, GA? I have only Forsyth Records and if he is buried under his kitchen in Elbert County, he would not be in my Forsyth County Cemetery Book. Have you tried the Elbert County page? Elbert County Georgia Genealogy -http://www.athens.net/~laaron Donna
Donna, Honestly, I don't know when or if any of the SANDERS or CARTER'S were in Forsyth Co at all, no one has been able to tell me where my ancestor came from, we all seem to have the same info that came from a book written in 1933 by a Travis Parker. I believe he was a researcher for the Savannah Genealogy Assn(?) at that time. Recently a "cousin" sent me info that their side of the family thought Elias SANDERS came from NC, but no one knows for sure, that i've contacted. If they are or their ancestor's were there at all, it was before 1800's. I say that due to Elias having land in Elbert Co, by 1807/08. gale sanders ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, September 13, 1999 8:10 AM Subject: Re: [GAFORSYT-L] SANDERS/CARTER lookups > Forsyth County started in 1832. Dan pointed out that his reading was Powel (Powell) and I agree. and I agree.
Does Elias ever appear on the Elbert County Census? If so when did he disappear from there?
I did not link my history page to my main page. Forsyth County History ( histlnx) http://hometown.aol.com/mflp/histlnx.html On it is a map 1834 that shows how the original counties lay. Before 1833, Forsyth peoples Records would be filed in Cherokee County. Before 1832, Forsyth peoples Records would be in Hall or Gwinnett depending on which side of Baldridge Ridge Creek and/or the Federal Road they lived on.
Re. Household 236 I read that name as Powel, Mary. Thanks for posting the record. It will give us an idea of where they were living. I was told by a researcher of this line, Ben Garrett, that their property was on both sides of the river and therefore they were in both Hall and Forsyth Cos. Their property is supposedly under Lake Lanier. It would be interesting to find the deeds where the land was sold to get the exact location. Were Garretts still on that land when Lake Lanier was planned? They were probably in the same place in 1840 Forsyth Co as they were in 1820 and 1830 when they show up in HAll Co, maybe just moved across the river into a new home or did the lines change?? Just an interesting questions that pops up when I see different records, some from Forsyth and some from Hall. In the June '61 quarterly there are ref telling us that she would lecture on "Planning Your Summer Research"; and "A Geneaological Problem--How to Put a Difficult Family Together" Also in this quarterly was a request from her for info on her gr father, Cicero Smith, A Confederate soldier from Georgia. In the June "61 issue, she requested info on the name HILL--specifically the father of Melissa Hill--b 15 Oct 1849 near Morrelton, Ark. Her mother was Caroline Titsworth who was adopted by her step-grandfather, James Campbell. She took the name of Campbell after the death of her father. In the June issue she was looking for anyone researching names TRAMWELL, KITE, CLARKE, KENT, McBRIDE, McDANIEL, PLEASANT & POTTER names.
