Yes - there were a couple of cases in my family but usually the Jr. was named after a grandfather. Could this be your case also? Bill ----- Original Message ----- From: David L. I should also mention there are also many "freebie" sites - like Geo-Cities/Yahoo, etc. You are alloted a generous amount of space. David, Yes, I found a case in Limestone Co., AL where the Jr. was the nephew of the Sr. They lived back in the early 1800's. Melba -----Original Message----- From: David L. The first son was named after the Father's Father. The second son was named after the Mother's Father. The third son was named after the Father. The fourth son was named after the Father's eldest Brother. The first daughter was named after the Mother's Mother. The second daughter was named after the Father's Father. The third daughter was named after the Mother. The fourth daughter was named after the Mother's eldest Sister. The above naming pattern ws usually called the "Dutch" system. The German system was to use a common first name for two or more children. And use the middle name was their "everyday name." Some things to consider as you search: "Mrs." used with a woman's name did not always means she was married, this was used if she had wealth, and was the proper way to address her. "Mr./Mister" was used only for men of wealth and /or education/ a retired man might be listed as a "Gentleman." "Jr." after a name did not always mean that his father had the same name: it might bow an uncle or older cousin. "Step, other" was sometimes called "mother-in-law" in colonial time. "Cousin" could be a relative of any degree, sometimes called a friend. "Uncle" might refer to a close family friend, not related. In early wills, "son-in-law" could mean stepson as well as the spouse of a daughter. "Nephew" sometimes meant grandson or granddaughter, as well as "nephew" as sometimes we use it today. The word "housekeeper" once meant property owner, and could be used for a male as well as female. "Domestic" once meant the housewife, not necessarily a servant. "Inmate" as used in the Pennsylvania archives, refers to a man living in the home of another person, and not necessarily in an instution. In the same book "Freeman" means a young man, not yet married. --part1_0.3df5a829.2538e71c_boundary--
It is my understanding that in earlier times the term Jr. was used to distinguish which of two men one was referring to - the younger of the two men with the same name. The men may or may not have been related to each other. Pat On Fri, 15 Oct 1999 09:24:09 -0600 "David L. My John Roper was married to Tabitha Roper in the 1850 Forsyth County census. In 1856 he married Amy Elizabeth Reid and is listed with her in the 1860 Forsyth County census. Tabitha had one more child, named Sarah, in 1854, so we assumed that she died between 1854 and 1856. But then Annette Bramblett sent us a list of the Friendship Baptist Church membership list that indicates that Tabitha remained a member of that church until 1877. Does this mean that old John dumped (divorced) Tabitha to marry a younger woman? Or is there some other possible explanation? David Roper David L. My ggg-grandparents John and Tabitha Roper were members of the Friendship Baptist Church in Forsyth County. Another member listed is "John Roper Jr." John had a son named John - but that was years later. The term "John Roper Jr" also does not fit any other John Roper at that time that I know about. Someone told me that it was not uncommon in those days to call someone by the name "Jr" if they had the same name as someone older in the area - whether they were the son of that person or not. If that is the case here, "John Jr." probably refers to a younger cousin of my John who was named John C. Roper. At long last I come to my question: Has anyone else ever heard of calling someone Jr. to distinquish them someone older with the same name? David Roper David L. Got this from another list. This is brand new. There may be a few bugs yet, but there's a message board where the fellow taking care of the GEDs is posting responses to the suggestions. And he is fast. You can now upload your GEDCOMs to Rootsweb!!!!! Here's the URL: http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/
Longstreet Cemetery is located on the south side of Campground Road. Campground Road turns west off Hwy 9 opposite Midway Church. From 400 you would take McFarland Road west to Hwy 9 then turn right (north) and go up. New Harmony you turn north off 20 just before the Cherokee Co. line onto Heardsville Rd. the cemetery will be on the right hand side just past Pisgah Rd.
I was hoping that someone might be able to tell me where New Harmony Baptist Church and Longstreet Baptist Church are located? I am trying to locate the cemetaries there. I have relatives ( Richards) that are buried at both sites. thanks stacy
