Seems some people have different spellings for old names. I've been through this over the years and learned basically this. #5 - There were no computers is the 1400's, 1500's, 1600's, 1700's, 1800's, and the 1900's until the 1960's. And there were no personal computers until the late 1970's. #4 - Everyone makes mistakes, especially the average typist. #4A - There were dyslexic people before the 1990's. #4B - US Census takers are paid less than minimum wages. #3 - Handwriting/penmanship/cursive varies between persons, languages, mood swings, full moon, etc. It always has, and it always will. #2 - The most slaughtered letters in lower case handwriting are: .. o looks like a .. a looks like o .. a looks like u .. u looks like a .. b written instead of d .. d written instead of b. #1 - In European languages like German & Spanish, vowels have a dot, dots, or dash (umlats for example) above the basic letters and are rarely translated to English. ESPECIALLY on the Internet at American web sites. 1. [GAFORSYT-L] Roper
    2. Recently I noticed a query about The Roper family in Forsyth Co. There are some Ropers scattered intermittently among the branches of my tree so I thought this might be a good time to ask about them. Does anyone have any information on the following? Oscar ROPER - married Alice BANNISTER 18 Sept. 1892 Forsyth Co. Susan Ida ROPER - m Rufus BANNISTER 22 Feb. 1908 Forsyth Co. Alice ROPER - m John DOOLEY 14 Jan. 1917 Forsyth Co. Susan and Alice Roper may be sisters - not sure. Rufus and Alice Bannister are cousins. Thanks for any assistance. 1. [GAFORSYT-L] Holbrooks?
    2. David L. Roper
    3. There were many connections between my Ropers and the Holbrooks in Forsyth County. Annette Bramblett sent me several pages from "Migration of Holbrooks from England to America and Forsyth County, Georgia" by Winnie Tallant. These pages covered my ggg-aunt Mahulda Carolyn (Roper) Holbrook, but I have a feeling that many other Roper ancestors are in the book. Can anyone tell me if this book is still for sale? And if so, where? David L. Roper David L. Roper 1112 Judson Ave. Judsonia AR 72081 (501) 729-4414

    3. Yes, she was Mary Ann Perry, but her mother was a Martin. Her father: Lewis Perry, her mother: Martha Martin, married Feb 15, 1838. After James Berry Roach died, his widow, Mary Ann married Reuben Hill. They moved to Arizona and she lived here until 1913. She is buried here in Phoenix. My grandfather was one of James Berry and Mary Ann Roach's 2 surviving children (they had 5, only 2 survived). There were quite a number of Hill children. 3. My great-grandfather, James Berry Roach, of Forsyth County, fought in the Confederacy and was wounded at Baker's Creek, MS in the Battle of Vicksburg and died of his wounds within a few weeks. I recently sent to the National Archives for his service record, which a received a couple of weeks ago. It included a lot of valuable information about how and where he was wounded. And it also included a copy of the following deposition made by my great-grandmother to claim any money due to him at the time of his death. I thought this deposition might be of interest to a few other Forsyth county families because several other names are mentioned. The copy of the deposition was very faint, so it required a lot of imagination, but the names are correct, I believe. I hope someone else finds this in some way helpful. Marsha Roach Georgia, Forsyth County On this, the twelfth day of August, 1863 before me, the Subscriber and acting Justice of the Peace of said county, personally appeared Mary A. Roach who herewith deposes and says that she is the lawfull [sic] wife of James B. Roach, deceased of Capt. W. S. Monroe’s Company D, 56th Regiment, Georgia Volunteers, commanded by Col. E. P. Watkins, in the service of the Confederate States in the present war with the United. States. That the deceased James B. Roach entered the service at Campbell [illeg. Word], Georgia on the 7th Day of May, 1862, and died at Jackson, Miss. (of wound received in the battle at Baker’s Creek, Miss) on the 1st day of July, 1863. That she makes this depposition [sic] for the purpose of obtaining from the government of the Confederate States whatever may have been due said deceased at the time of his death for services as a private aforesaid. Sworn to and subscribed Maryan Roach this before me Alex. W. Johnston, J.P. And on this the same day and year before me the same signed Subscriber and Justice of the Peace as aforesaid, personally appeared Sarah E. West and Charity Moon, who after being sworn according to law deposes and says that they are well acquainted with Mrs. Mary A. Roach, the Claiment, and well knew for several years James B. Roach the deceased soldier herein mentioned and that the statement made in the forgoing affidavit by Mrs. Mary A. Roach as to her relationship to said deceased soldier is correct in every particular to the best of their knowledge and belief and that they, the same Sarah E. West and Charity Moon, are wholly disinterested (?), Sworn to and subscribed before me Sarah E. West Alex.W. Johnston, J.P. Charity Moon I, Alex W. 3. David, While working with old Baptist church records, in the early years the person usually took their church letter with them as they moved. In Mt. Tabor's records that are some references to persons who had moved and had not taken their letter with them. Have you looked in Cherokee County census' for those years, Friendship is not that far from the county line, and I have discovered sometimes the census takers did know specifically where the county line was. Just some thoughts. Wanda David L. Lindsay Tabitha is not listed in the 1860 and 1870 censuses for Forsyth County, but she could have been living with someone. (It takes a LONG time to go through a census line by line - and it is easy to miss someone when you do that.) The Friendship Church listing gives a date (1877) after Tabitha's name and then DBL (dismissed by letter). This does not sound like someone finally woke up to the fact that she was dead and removed her name twenty years later. Is it possible that Tabitha could have moved somewhere else, but didn't bother getting her "letter" from the Friendship Church until much later? I don't really know that much about Baptist Church practices. What do you think? David Roper David L. Roper 1112 Judson Ave. Judsonia AR 72081 (501) 729-4414
