The mill on my main page was the mill of George Welch then Jacob Scudder's then M. L. Poole's. Don na Parrish on Forsyth County, Georgia http://www.hometown.aol.com/MFLP/index.html. I am sure the boards changed over the years, but the granite foundations probably remained the same. (The mill burned, but the foundations are still there just outside the fence of the new Pool's Mill Park) George Welch was a mixed blood. He signed the Treaty that yielded the land in Georgia to the US thus paving the way for the removal. His wife was a Jones and believed to be the sister of Jacob Scudder's wife. He applied for Ga citizenship and was not removed. He died in the 1840's and his wife remarried in Cherokee Co. Somewhere I have the names and birthdates of all his children from George Morrison Bell of Texas who wrote a book following up on Emmitt Starr's book. An interesting note I found in reading the microfilm rolls of Cherokee Letters to the Bureau of Indian Affairs is that George Welch wrote a letter stating that someone had tried to ambush him and asking the government for protection. Is this of some help? Donna

On the Alpharetta Historical Society webpage, in Tim Spruell's "Alpharetta Communities" under "Shakerag", he tells of the John ROGERS house as being the oldest in Fulton County. Can anyone tell me *exactly* where it was first located and where it is currently located? (I live in the area so I am familiar with the streets). I would also be interested in communicating with anyone researching this ROGERS line. Although I do not believe I am related, we have many ROGERS. Was John's father the Jacob ROGERS who died in Cumberland Co., NC c. 1774? What was John's relationship to the Robert ROGERS who married Lucy CORDERY, ancestor of Will ROGERS? Thanks. Best regards, Karin Corbeil

I found this yesterday in the book Cherokee By Blood, George W. Raines is my gggrandfather. Can anyone help me with information on either Thomas Raines or Edmund Duncan. I know from tradition that there was a name change from Duncan to Raines. MISC. TEST. P. 979 - No. 15418--1163- George W. Raines: "I am 60 years of age was born in Forsythe County, Ga. and have lived in Georgia all my life. I claim Cherokee Indian blood through my father. I have never recieved any Indian money from the government. I went to the Territory in 1894. I went to Mr. Thomas Stell and made an application for an allotment. He filed the papers with the Dawes Commission but I never received an allotment. In 1852 I lived in Forsythe County. I do not know if my father received any Indian money then or nor [sic]. I never heard of Hester, the enrolling agent about 1882. I have heard that I had Indian blood ever since I can remember. Heard my mother and father talk of it. My father lived with the Indians. I do not know why my father was not paid in 1852. He spoke the Indian language. I cannot." SIGNED: George W. Raines, Marietta, Ga. Jul 6, 1908. EXCEPTION CASE. George W. Raines (Appl 15418) and 1 child, Blackwells, Ga. Rejected. Total number of exceptions filed in this group-- 17. Original recommendation renewed. Exceptions disclos no clerical error and set forth no additional material facts. Applicant now gives a different person as his grandfather, naming Edmund Duncan in place of Thomas Raines. The affidavit in support shows that Edmund Duncan moved West in 1835. Applicant's father is said to have started with him. The father was born about 1790, but was not enrolled with the Eastern Cherokees in 1835. No ancestor shown to have been enrolled with the Eastern Cherokees." Wanda
