Hi, I am new to this list. Am seeking info on my grandfather JAMES. D. DUNCAN b. April 18, 1861, in Auraria, Lumpkin County Georgia. He was listed on the 1884 Hester Roll as living in Coal Mountain, Forsythe County, Georgia. I know very little about him. Am seeking info on his first wife and children. Only a few years ago I found he was married, prior to being married to my grandmother, when I found his name on the Miller Roll in Oklahoma. All my family have passed away, so I can't get any info there. He listed the following three children from his first marriage on his application. FRANKY M. DUNCAN (male) b. Sept. 14, 1889 (age at this time 18yrs.) LOVEY or LOVELY N. J. DUNCAN (female) b. Sept. 28, 1891(16 yrs.) LUTHER S. DUNCAN (male) b. May 22, 1894 (13 yrs.) I don't have a clue where these children were born. Other relatives that he had listed on his Miller Application are as follows. His Father: JOHN DUNCAN b.? d. Jan. 8, 1867. Born in Cherokee County, Ga. Mother: TABITHA LORTON b.? d.Feb. 14, 1886. Born in South Carolina. Sister: JULIA PERRY nee DUNCAN G-father: CHARLES DUNCAN b.? d.?. Born Cherokee County, Ga. G-mother: JUDITH ROACH b.? d .? Born ? GG-grandfather: EDWARD or EDMOND DUNCAN, born Cherokee County, Ga . His father, grandfather and great-grandfather were on several of the Indian Rolls taken in Georgia. Do hope someone recognizes a name here or can tell me where to go for more info. Thank you in advance. Pat Duncan Garroutte in Illinois

I agree. Lorene Veal
Lorene, Thanks for the shout. We're speaking of the same place: The original site of 'Old Liberty Church,' now completely overgrown. You're quite right that Francis' daughter, Jane (Bell) Hudgins, and her husband are buried there -- in fact, their tombstones are among the very few which are both inscribed and still in place. The property -- now sandwiched between two improved lots -- is still owned by the (New) Liberty Methodist Church (so I'm told), which is some distance away. Whether Francis was/is buried there is speculative and presumptive, at best. He's said to have donated the property -- although that cannot be validated in the surviving records of either Jackson or Hall Co. That -- together with the burial of his daughter and the fact that no one has found his burial site anywhere else -- forms the basis for the belief that he's there: Not a particularly stong case, in my view. Personally, I'd like to think so -- and choose to do so -- but I think it's important for descendants to understand that doing so is an 'act of faith' rather than a matter of fact, as implied in the NSDAR data. --- David

Lest NSDAR data claim still more victims . . . The first two sets of data recited claim descendancy from RWS Francis Bell (1750-1838) via his son, Joseph Scott Bell. o In both cases, Joseph's birth year is cited as 1774, whereas reliable data -- to include his tombstone ar Mars Hill cemetery, Forsyth Co., I think -- place his birth year as 1794. In both cases, also, the birth year of Joseph's wife is erroneously cited as 1773, whereas she, too, was born in 1794. o As for Francis Bell: Both sets of data state conclusively that Francis Bell was/is "buried in the cemetery of Liberty Methodist Church . . ." While this burial site for Francis Bell is rather widely accepted as very likely, to the best of my knowledge/belief -- as a 3d gr-grandson, born and raised barely five miles from the site -- no one has been able to demonstrate with any certainty that his mortal remains were interred there. On a more minor point: So far as I've been able to determine, at the time of its establishment Liberty Church -- located on the Jackson-Hall Co. line -- was non-denominational; it was only much later that it became Methodist. So far as it's known, Francis Bell lived and died a Presbyterian. In re John Phinazee, father-in-law of Joseph Scott Bell -- and also a 3d gr-grandfather of mine: His RW service is a matter of record, but I'm aware of no reason to believe that he "was at the surrender of Yorktown . . ." My 'soapbox' is in the shop . . . so I'd merely caution that data gleaned from NSDAR applications should in no way be presumed to be wholly accurate nor accepted at face value. --- David Bell

re burial site of Francis Bell. There is a cemetery that is called "Old Liberty burial ground" where the old church was at one time. You may be talking about the present Liberty Methodist Church. In the old cemetery you will find Jane Bell, dau of Francis Bell, and her husband, Beverly Hudgins. I don't know if Francis Bell is there or not, but all the information I have indicates he is buried "Old Liberty Methodist Church Cemetery Hall Co Ga". The cemetery is located off Braselton/ Gainesville Highway. Coming from Gainesville you turn left at what was Masedonia Church, dead end and turn left again and the cemetery is on the right not too far down the road. There used to be a fence, but it is gone and it is grown over terrible. If you are not looking real good you will miss it. I was there in the summer and most of the toombstones are fallen down or gone completely. I did find my husbands great-grandfather's toombstone, Elijah Albright Veal. I went there 20 years ago and had a list of all the stones there, but that was 20 years ago and I don't know where it is now. Hope this helps Lorene Veal > o As for Francis Bell: Both sets of data state conclusively >that Francis Bell was/is "buried in the cemetery of Liberty Methodist >Church . . ."
