Hello List, I have the book, "All Roads To Rome," by Roger Aycock. It has an index, if anyone would like for me to do a lookup for you? I would be glad to do it. I also have these books: A History Of Rome And Floyd County, Georgia, by Battey, and The Heritage of Floyd County, Georgia. If you don't get a response right away, please have patience. I go to college during the day, but on my free time I will get back to you as soon as possible. Carolyn Sutton
Thanks for the volunteer look ups. I am researching Rakestraw, Hobgood and Rains from that area. Your guestbook from your homepage does not work with my 9.0 AOL. I'm sure we connect somewhere. We have several common surnames. Duke(s), Elliott, Moore, Hightower, and Drummond. Till next time..... Lona Faye Duke Bows
I am very sorry but I made a mistake when making the web site. I sent you an address with "home.html" at the end of the URL. That was incorrect. This is the correct address: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~gdrummondjr/ I promise not to bother you all about this again. (Except maybe a few individuals ;)) I know that some of you are getting this multiple times and for that I apologize. I'll do some extra research for you if you send me a request. :) Thanks, Glen
I would also be interested in this. I also have many old pictures from this studio. I have some photos of my Gattis ancestors that I believe date from about the 1890's. On the back of each photo is printed, "J. W. Lancaster, Rome, Georgia." Is anyone familiar with this studio? I am interested in finding out what years they were in operation so that I can more accurately date the photographs. Thanks, Christa Pitcock pitcockc@bellsouth.net

The Polk County Cemetery Preservation Committee needs your help with locating the property owners of several cemeteries. Please go to the "Help Needed" section of their web site at <A HREF="http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ga/county/polk/CemPres.html"> http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ga/county/polk/CemPres.html</A> Would you like to see a new cemetery book for Polk County? Most of the cemetery surveys were done in the 1960s & 70s for the old books. If interested, then take the simple poll and let us know what you think. (It is a blind poll and no one will know how you voted.) The cemeteries page has also been updated with more photos of the cemeteries. Still have more to upload and hope to get them done this week. If you know of other cemeteries that are not listed, please be sure to let us know. Our next meeting will be on Saturday, July 19 at the Cedartown Library beginning at 10 a.m. If you live close enough, we would like for you to attend the meeting. Doris Robbins

There are some Drummonds in my family line. Check floyd county, Ga marriage lists. Search Duke married to Drummond. Also in Alabama Drummond is a very known name. In the B'ham area there was and still is the Drummond Mines for coal. Till next time..... Lona Faye Duke Bows

Hello -- My Polk County brick wall is William Hopgood STONE, b. 1822 in Virginia (per census records), married Mary "Mollie" Kate GARNER May 11, 1848, in Polk County. They lived out their lives in Polk County and had 8 children, all of whom lived and died in Polk County Have never been able to trace this man and would appreciate any information. My mother and her ancestors (and me) for many years were all from Cedartown/Esom Hill and I have plenty of good information to share if anyone is interested. Names include: GRIFFITH, BREWSTER, WILLIAMS, HACKNEY, MORRIS, STONE, PENCE, GARNER. Thanks! Kitty Johnson
Just received death certificate from Georgia for Susan Edwards McDaniel (Mrs. Drury Oliver McDaniel) It indicates she was born 5-2-1850 in GA. (Parents Mark & Sarah Edwards appear on 1850 Floyd Co., GA census) Parents listed are Mark Edwards, born SC and Sarah Fowler, born SC. My research indicates they were probably originally from Spartanburg Co., SC. Can anyone suggest a starting place for Fowlers in SC or Floyd & Bartow Co., GA? Thanks Terry Jackson

There is a group of concerned citizens that have started a Cemetery Preservation Project for Polk County. They have a web site at <A HREF="http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ga/county/polk/CemPres.html"> http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ga/county/polk/CemPres.html</A> They need help in locating some of the "forgotten" cemeteries. Many of which were either Family Cemeteries or Community Cemeteries. When the love ones were buried, the families never dreamed of a day when the cemeteries would not be maintained. But as the families moved off, died out, the cemeteries became forgotten. Today's younger generation has little, if any information on these cemeteries. Do you have any information about cemeteries in Polk County? How about information about unmarked graves? Please e-mail me or the Preservation Committee with the information. Thanks, Doris

She often will send a message to 'a' list about something new that has been added to the Archives for that county. Since there are 159 counties in Georgia, receiving mail from 159 mailing list would be a task most of us would not like to face. <g> Today while working with another mailing list administrator on a problem on their list, I discovered that there is a provision made to allow for people to make an announcemnet to the list with out being members. Having worked with Virginia, I knew she was overwhelmed with mailing list messages. This was a way to lighten her load. So... when you see a message from her, and you would like to communicate with her, use the address in the announcement. She would be glad to hear from you concerning any of the files. > >According to the application of Sarah J. And then many did not. I have a lot of deaths during the early years of the list that are not in there. Then, like now, it is hard to get some folks to change the way they did things. Sending death information to the state was one of those things. > >This information was gleaned by me in research conducted in Rome library in >2002. Many times we are left with no way to find the information. Another good source in the Rome Cememteries is the Sexton's Book. There is a copy of this in the library also. The first time I saw it, I had to go to the Sexton's office. The book I needed was the years around 1890 - 1900. At best this book was not up to a lot of searching. I am glad that someone was able to copy the entire book and place a copy in the library. Wyndell Taylor List Administrator - Floyd County GA MAiling List
Charlie, Am assuming that if there was a CSA pension, there would probably be no money for a doctor. If the doctor didn't come, there probably wasn't a death certificate. Virginia: According to the application of Sarah J. Hamilton, who died Dec. 28, 1919, in Rome, for a confederate widow's pension, her husband, James William Hamilton, died on March 9, 1919. There was no record of his death in Ga. Archives death certificates. This information was gleaned by me in research conducted in Rome library in 2002. His military record and subsequent application for Confederate pension is on microfilm in the library's very excellent genealogy section.
