Shaw Copyright. All rights reserved. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/copyright.htm Historic Marker 057-M - 1955 Georgia Historic Commission Georgia School for the Deaf Cave Spring, Floyd County, Georgia In 1833, a deaf man, John Jacobus Flournoy, of Jackson County, great grandson of Jacob Flournoy, a French Huguenot, urging education for the deaf, interested Governor Wilson Lumpkin and the Georgia Legislature in this educational movement. At first the pupils, few in number, were sent to the American Asylum for the Deaf and Dumb in Hartford. Conn. Distance, weather, and the youth of the pupils made that unsatisfactory. On May 15, 1846, with four pupils in a log cabin, with O. P. Fannin, teacher, this school began as a part of the Hearn Manual School at Cave Spring, Georgia. This school grew rapidly and, in 1847, a brick building was erected and dedicated. Later, other additions were made. The school was closed during the War Between the States and used as a hospital by both Confederate and Union forces. It resumed operations in February 1867 and is still supported by the State of Georgia. In 1955, this school had 82 teachers and employees and an income of more than $500,000. 3. I don't think there is a Floyd County will book. But you can call the Floyd County Probate Court and they will send you a copy if they have the will. They also have all the intestate records for people who died without a will. Linda A ----- Original Message ----- From: "Glen D. 3. Hi, Marilyn! No, I do not know of a connection with our Pruitts. My T. M.'s father was William and his mother's name is unknown. T.M. was Tillman Madison? and he had a brother names Calvin and some half-brothers and sisters. One was named Zilman. They lived in Ga. and Al. on the state lines. Maybe, someday, we will find a connection so I am saving your info. 3. The two I'm looking for are relatively recent - 1968 and 1969. Any idea who to call? 1. Re: [GAFLOYD] Myrtle Hill Cemetery
    2. Several years ago I was researching Myrtle Hill and found I had more names and dates than the Sexton did for my family. Take death certificates, family letters, newspaper obits and/or a Bible and offer to help the Sextons with their records. Rosebird

I believe there is a copy of the Sexton's book at the library in Rome. This is a journal type book and dates back the 1850's... I think. I had a chance many years ago to look at the original when I found some errors in the dates of great grandparents tombstones. Since then someone has zeroxed the book, and it is in the library. 3. If the Myrtle Hill burials are pre 1945 there wont' be any records other than the book published by RJTaylor(?) foundation. My burials are all pre 1945, so I have no records to review and have to depend on the listing form other sources that were used to complie the book. Deborah Byrd, Langstons, Lamberths and Dunns from Floyd county.

    1. [GAFLOYD] Myrtle Hill Cemetery
    2. Kitty Johnson
    3. Hi -- recently someone circulated a list of addresses/phone numbers for city/county offices in charge of Rome cemeteries. I thought I had saved this, but cannot find it. Can anyone please tell me who I might call regarding burial records for Myrtle Hill Cemetery? I know the people are buried there, but I'd like to find who might be listed as a responsible party, perhaps a descendant that might still be alive. Thank you. Kitty Johnson Corvallis, Oregon

    2. Crilley
    3. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ga/floyd.htm Scroll down to vital records -- and Deaths 1919-1940 We're so lucky to have Wyndell Taylor - who just completed his hard task of the Death Indexes for Floyd County. Take a look and if you recognize some names that may be mistyped -- let us know. I hope you find some relative that may have died in that time period, that you had not known the date for. The certificate # is there also in case you need to order the Death Certificate itself. Let's all give a hand of applause for Wyndell !! This was a very tedious task --- so we really do appreciate it. Virginia Crilley

    3. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ga/floyd.htm Thank you, Beth, for the wonderful contribution of the material about the Open Door Home (Children's Home) for the late 1929-1930 period. Although these are minutes and don't contain specific children's names, I know that anyone wanting to learn about this home during that time period will be so happy to be able to read these minutes. Any if anyone does have a relative who was in the Home, please share your own information. We just keep getting more data on-line for Floyd -- and that helps everyone out!!
