    3. Congratulations on sticking up for your column. I no longer get it since I left Georgia. I am interested in the new archives in Atlanta and plan to visit there this summer. Would it be possible for you to email me a copy of the column on the new archives. 1. [GAFLOYD] Important Genealogy Help Needed
    2. Wyndell Taylor
    3. Hello All, Some of you may have already seen this, but I feel it is important enough to make sure our mailing list memebers are aware of it. If you live in the Atlanta area, or even if you do not, you probably have heard of, and benefitted from, Ken Thomas' genealogy column in the Atlanta Journal & Constitution. It has run for 26 years, and has been *the* means by which genealogists in the Atlanta area get their genealogy news. At events where participants are asked where they heard about the event, 90 percent consistently cite Ken Thomas' column. The AJC is threatening to cancel the column, citing budget cuts, although the stipend is quite small. The AJC editor has said that, if response is great enough, they will not cut the column. This column is very important to genealogists. *Please* write or call editor Mike Lupo. Mike Lupo at 404-526-5487 mlupo@ajc.com When you write, or call the AJC, please include the information that you are subscribers. When I sent my message, I told them that the column was one of the reasons I bought the Atlanta paper. Without that, there was no need for me to purchase it. If they think and understand economics, then they may understand losing subscribers and those that purchase the paper. Wyndell Taylor List Manager

    1. [GAFLOYD] Looking for relatives in Floyd, Haralson & Polk Counties
    2. Recently my computer crashed and I did not have a recent back-up disk. Had just uploaded a few thousand relatives and need help recovering information. Hope you back-up your files more often than I did. Have four families from these counties. They are descended from Andrew Jackson Estes (1839-1922) , Newton Cicero Robbins (1867-1912) , Alexander Mobley (1811-1860's) and William F Wilkins (1837- ?) Other families associated with the ESTES name are: Allred, Dempsey, Hatch, Harper, House, King, Long, Short, Waddell, Woods. Other families associated with the MOBLEY name are: Baker, Crocker, Ellis, Garrett. Other families associated with the ROBBINS name are: Carter, East, Hall, McBurnette, Shaw, Smith, Strickland, West, Wiggins. Other families associated with the WILKINS name are: Ellis, Sanders and Woods. Many of these families drifted back and forth across the GA - AL border into Cherokee and Cleburne Counties. There could be other family names associated with these that I have forgot or lost in the crash. If you have any information on any of these families, I would love to exchange information with you. 3. Hi, Doris, Sorry about your data loss; it could have just as easily happened to me since I neglect to back up my own data enough. You mention one (or more) Woods families allied with your Wilkinses and Esteses, families who move back and forth across the state line between Floyd and Polk Counties in GA and Cherokee Co. AL. You also mention Smiths, to whom my WOOD(s)/NIBLET lines may be related. I'm researching Ezra and Butler Wood(s), possible uncles of my ggrandfather William "Willie" Wood, killed in a mining accident in that area between 1895 and 1900. All lived in the Bluffton/Tecumseh AL area, while Willie's father-in-law William Niblet spent much time in Floyd County as a youth, possibly being born there. His father Richard Niblet had land in Floyd County before 1860. Another Wood(s) line in this same area which may be related is that of Levi Wood(s), who with his wife and some children are buried in the Salem Cemetery near Bluffton AL, just across the state line. There seems to have been a good deal of coming and going between AL and GA. A Melton SMITH and wife Elizabeth seem to have been related to the Niblets (William's daughter Rebecca married my ggrandfather Willie Wood). If any of these appear to be allied to your family, please give me a holler. Sorry again for your data loss, and I hope you will be able to recover it. --Mark --- Elantr@aol.com wrote: > Recently my computer crashed and I did not have a > recent back-up disk. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Connelly, Ladew, Ensley, Hanks, Lincoln Classification: Biography Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Dc.2ADI/260 Message Board Post: From Cyclopedia of Georgia Comprising Sketches of Counties, Towns, Events, Institutions, and Persons, Arranged in Cyclopedic Form in Three Volumes Edited by Ex-Governor Allen D. Candler and General Clement A. Evans State Historical Association Atlanta, 1906 Vol. 1, p. 442-3 Connelly, Brazilla A., was known and honored as one of the progressive business men and sterling citizens of the city of Rome, Ga., where he died Oct. 1, 1897, having been the owner of the well equipped tannery which is now operated by his widow. He was born near Hunter, Greene county, N.Y., in the Catskill mountain district, Feb. 14, 1849, a son of William A. and Mary E. (Ladew) Connelly. The former was born near Hunter, July 14, 1820, his grandfather settled in Greene at an early day, became a prosperous farmer, and also owned an interest in a chair factory at Hunter. Mary E. (Ladew) Connelly was born in Ulster county, N.Y., Nov. 19, 1829. Brazilla A. secured his educational training in the schools of Kingston, N.Y. and when eighteen years of age he went to Emmaville, Pa., where he learned the tanning trade in the establishment of the firm of J. B. Hoyt & Co., of which his uncle H. S. Ladew was a member, and he became familiar with all the branches of the business and ! was (?) made superintendent of the tannery at Emmaville. In October, 1876, he went to Chatanooga, Tenn., as superintendent of the tannery conducted by the firm of Gairweather & Ladew, successors to J. B. Hoyt & Co., Mr. Hoyt having retired from the business. He continued superintendent of the Chattanooga tannery until its operations involved the handling of 500 hides a day, the tannery at the time being the largest in the Union. In 1881 Mr. Connelly decided to engage in business for himself. He accordingly located in Rome, where he erected and equipped a small tannery, the original capacity of the same being 20 hides a day. He developed a prosperous enterprise, bringing to bear his intimate knowledge of all details of the business, and at the time of his death the tannery was putting out 60 hides a day, in the form of select belting leather. He also owned and operated a tannery at Jellico, Tenn., the same having a capacity of 100 hides a day. Since his death Mrs. Conn! elly has continued the business in Rome, and has shown marked acumen in the management of the same, the output of the tannery now averaging 120 hides a day. The enterprise is conducted on a strictly cash basis, and from $25,000 to $30,000 are expended each year in the purchase of bark alone, this large amount being disseminated among the farmers in this locality, so that the business exercises functions of marked value to the community, in both a direct and secondary way. Mr. Connelly gave himself earnestly and faithfully to the upbuilding of this enterprise, and rose to a place of prominence as a reliable, upright and progressive businessman, gaining the unqualified esteem and confidence of the community in which he made his home until his death. He was a Republican in political proclivities; was identified with the Masonic fraternity and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows; and accorded a liberal support to the Methodist Episcopal church, of which his widow had long be! en a devoted member. On Dec. 20, 1870 Mr. Connelly was united in marriage to Miss Jennie Ensley, daughter of Abram and Mary (Hanks) Ensley, of Emmaville, Pa., where she was reared and educated. Her mother was a relative of the mother of President Abraham Lincoln. Mr. Connelly is survived by one son, John Augustus, who is an executive in the office of the tannery now conducted by his mother.
