I only checked the 1860 census for Fayette County, and the youngest child was definitely listed as Thomas, and as a male. But, we all know we must be careful with census records! I have no proof in hand, but I expect John Thomas Mackey was given considerable property and slaves when he married whom I believe was Solomon T. Bridges' and Serena May's only child in 1850. Solomon T. Bridges was quite wealthy, including what he had received on behalf of his wife (Serena May) when Drury May, my ggg-grandfather, died in 1841. At the time of his death in 1841, Drury May owned over 2,400 acres of land in Fayette County, and had 40-50 slaves, all of which was sold by the legatees. Solomon T. Bridges was one of the executors of Drury May's estate. Solomon T. Bridges was listed in the 1845 Tax List for Coweta County, District 1, with 1,800 acres of land and 31 slaves. He was shown with 49 slaves at the time of the 1850 census, about the time his only child married John T. Mackey. I expect he would have been quite generous to the young couple to ensure his daughter's comfort. I imagine that Dr. Page was also a man of means, but he had many younger children to look after, and Martha was his eldest. I suspect Solomon T. Bridges was the major contributor, but I have never researched the deeds. It seems Solomon T. Bridges had a history of generosity, evidenced by information found in his 1883 estate appraisement. It listed 62 notes, mostly from the 1870s, considered "entirely worthless," totaling about $8,000 (quite a bit at that time), all for loans he made to others in need in the community to help them get back on their feet after the War. I expect he had little to no hope of ever collecting. We can discuss these folks further if you wish. I am: bobsedge@sbcglobal.net Interesting family! Bob J.
