Abner BANKSTON/BANKSON (b. 1790-1800) lived in Fayette Co. GA from (at least) 1823 to 1831 according to tax records and other legal documents. Abner owned 202 1/2 acres, District 4, Lot 63, which was distributed in the 1821 GA. land lottery but Abner is not listed as a "winner" so he probably purchased the land from someone else (who?). >From the 1830 Census, I ascertain that Abner was living with his wife, Elizabeth (nee) LONG (Elizabeth was the widow of George Martin RISER of Edgefield Co. SC) BANKSTON and children - (Abner's stepson) George RISER and the BANKSTON children: Baswell/Braswell, Henrietta and Malinda/Emeline Caroline. Their son, Abner BANKSTON was born after 1830. This family moved to Harris Co. GA by 1835 where father Abner died. I am looking for more info regarding this family and can share data. Thanks, Adrienne
Hi, I am contacting the list again in my quest to complete the family tree of an elderly friend as a present for his 83rd birthday on April 27. His surname is WARD, but his forebears' names include many old Fayette Co., GA names, i. e. McLEAN, JONES, REEVES, PATTERSON. Mr. Ward's earliest known ancestor was MILES WARD. "History of Fayette County" includes Marriage Record Bk. A, which shows: MILES WARD m. LIVIA McLEOD Mar 19 1829 (Her name is "Leviney" [Lavinia?"], "LINEA" and "LINNIE" is other places.) Another record I have, the WILL of MARY PEARSON MCCLAIN (made 1851, proved 1855), lists Mary Pearson McClain's "sister, LEVINEY, wife of MILES WARD." My conclusion: Lavinia (or whatever!) was a PEARSON. She first married a MCCLAIN/MCLEAN and then m. MILES WARD, in 1829. SAMUEL PEARSON was the father of MARY McClain and, thus of LAVINIA PEARSON MCLAIN WARD. * Is anyone willing to share info on the familiy of SAMUEL PEARSON? I need to find LAVINIA/LIVIA PEARSON's DOB, etc. * Am also interested in the McCLAIN or McLEAN (usual spelling in Fayette Co.) connection with this PEARSON family, the children of SAMUEL PEARSON, as mentioned in the Will of Mary Pearson McClain: 1. MARY Pearson d. 1855 m._____ MCCLAIN, d. bef. 1851 2. ELIZABETH S. Pearson d. bef. 1851 m. Nov. 21, 1843 ALLEN W. REEVES i. Oliver Reeves ii. Mary Jane Reeves iii. Elizabeth Reeves 3. MARTHA Pearson m._______ MOSES 4. LEVINEY Pearson m. 1st _____ McCLAIN 2nd MILES WARD 5. JOHN M. (McCLAIN) Pearson m. Feb. 5, 1844, Mary Ann PATE [Fr/ Fayette Marriage Rec.] 6. DAFFEIL-- sister mentioned in Mary's Will, with no last name.Maybe this IS her married last name--DUFFELL?? --a Fayette Co. name. I would greatly appreciate any info/clues/direction in completing this birthday present for Mr. Ward. Hello, Fellow Listers, I am seeking help with a birthday present I'm preparing. Let me explain. My best childhood friend's father, Mr. Ward, who is 83 and quite ill, gave me a small amount of family information two weeks ago and asked if I could find more about his family. I am working feverishly to come up with as much as I can as a surprise for his 84th birthday on April 27. Mr. Ward's roots are in Fayette Co., with the earliest names, found so far, being MILES WARD, JOHN McLEAN/MCCLEAN/MCCLAIN and FRANCIS PATTERSON. As best I can determine, all these folks lived in the southern end of Fayette. Other names are McLEAN, KING, CHAMPION with BISHOP, PHILLIPS, HARRIS, HICKS, ROGERS, JONES at the periphery. Would you read ALL this and see if anything rings a bell? Here's the line--so far-- MILES WARD b.?, (Ulster is my GUESS, since he was Protestant), Ireland, on 1840 Fayette Census ; d. can't find in Fayette Cem Book m. Thanks for reading this very long post and in advance for any direction/ clues/ info you might provide to help me bring joy to Mr. Ward. To Pamela, I read your query regarding your GANN family. Although I can't really help you with any information, I was wondering if you could help me? I am researching the CONINE family of Camphill, Tallapoosa Co. AL. I have a Mary Jane CONINE born 1856 Tallapoosa Co. AL. Mary Jane married Thomas J. GANN in 1877. Mary Jane died abt 1936. I believe they are both buried in West View Cemetery, Atlanta GA. Atlanta GA is not very far from Fayette Co. GA. I was just wondering if you know of this Thomas J. GANN? I do not know anything regarding the children, if any, of Thomas and Mary Jane. Thanks for any help, I appreciate it. Sheila
I am posting this to warn others about problems with ; Census Microfilm Expeditors 476 E. South Temple , Suite 4 Salt Lake City , UT 84111 website ; www.censusmicrofilm.com e-mail ; [email protected] and ; [email protected] I was lured to order several microfilm copies from this company with "guarantees" of "speedy delivery" and "low price" . My order was placed in October of 1998 and as of this posting I have not received the order or a refund after numerous contacts with Steven Jensen at this firm . In his occasional replies he repeatedly gave false information to me as to the status of the order and cashed the check when mentioned stopping payment on it .I have copies of all documents and correspondences for those interested . Complaints have been filed with the Better Business Bureau and the United States Postal Inspectors , they have informed me that even they can't order this company to give a refund , but may seek criminal charges . I guess small claims court is next . If you are seeking genealogy resources......consider my experiences with this "Firm". Thank you , Kenneth Sartin researching ; Sartin , Sartain , Sarton , Sarten , Sardin etc. etc.

Hello, My ancestor's occupation in 1850 as listed on the 1850 Fayette co., GA census was "Schoolteacher". Can anyone tell me what schools might have been in the area at that early time period? He (Caleb SIMMONS), was living in the 29th District I believe. His wife (Charlotte Pinkston STARR) had come from an actively Methodist background, yet Caleb's family had been members of the Phillip's Mill Baptist Church in Wilkes,GA. I'm really not familiar enough with this area of the country to know what the possibilities might be. Thanks for any help. Sincerely, Anne P.S. Family legend had it that there was a schoolteacher early in the family so I feel like it is very likely to be true. -- Anne S. Interviewed Fayette Co. old timers this weekend and found them referring to a half-brother of my great-grandmother, whom I never knew existed before. His name was J. P. PORTER. Clues: --full name could be JOHN POWELL PORTER, JR. --mail carrier whose route contained the Kenwood area in north Fayette Co., GA --may have owned or worked in a flour bagging operation in Jonesboro at some point. --I know he was living in the 1930' and 1940's as he signed register for my Thornton grandfather's funeral in 1943. --COULD have lived in or around Jonesboro, Clayton Co., GA --would have been the child of JOHN POWELL PORTER (1828-1919), whose first wife, mother of SARAH JANE PORTER (Mrs. WALTER BRANNON CARNES), died while he was imprisoned in Union POW camp. Obviously, JOHN POWELL PORTER remarried, and J.P. PORTER is a child of this second marriage. Suspect there would have been other children also. Anyone know of J. P. Porter or have any leads for me? Thanks so much, especially for having to read the silly subject line entry, Suzanne <[email protected]> ___________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail.
