    3. Can anyone out there on the list THAT ARE IN the Pope or Davenport Families of Fayette County, tell me if the person belonging to the below grave in above said cemetery, Could Maybe be..... Ollie Davenport-Jackson who married John Jackson.... The grave in Question...Ollie B. Pope Oct 27,1862-sept 30, 1943. grave is between Johnie Teel Thurman and Brewster Jackson, Just one grave seperates her from John Jackson. Was wondering if this Ollie B.Pope was a Davenport by Maiden name and was once the wife of John Jackson and thinking Pope may have been a second marriage after Johns death.Since the Grave of an Ollie Davenport Jackson cant be found in name and this grave is one grave away from John Jackson one line below and in the same area as Davenports graves. Anyone Know? Steven.

    1. Herod Thornton and Family.
    2. Steven K. Bramlett
    3. Herod Thornton- born February 13, 1778 was first married to Zilpha Blackman in Johnston County N.C and later after Zilpha’s death he married Phereby (Lee) McClenny who was the daughter of “Short” David Lee and Anna Eldridge. She was the widow of William McClenny. The descent from Herod to Mae Eveline DeMooney and on down to my self is thru his marriage to Phereby. While he was still living in North Carolina was inlisted as a soldier in The War Of 1812. Upon his fathers death He and 2 of his brothers received an equal share of there fathers land as directed in his will. Herod’s first marriage to Zilpha Blackman in 1803 the daughter of Brazila Blackman yielded many children who followed their father when he came to Ga. In 1828 the children that he had thru Zilpha were- Rebecca Jane Thornton who married John Brogdon for whom Brogdon Rd in Fayette County was named. Blackman Thornton who married Jenefer “Jency” Lee McClenny. Before they married, they were stepbrother and sister as Blackman was Herod’s son by Zilpha and Jency was the daughter of Pherbey who was Herod’s second wife. Sarah Thornton who married Coleman Hadley. John B. who married Letha Jackson. Felix Thornton who married Nancy B.E.L Hams And now we move at this point to Herods second Wife Phereby –Lee- McClenny the Widow of Wm. McClenny. The Children of Herod and Phereby- Haywood Thornton Who married Mary Jackson the sister of Wm. Needham Jackson and the Daughter of Jordan Jackson and Letha Smith. Eveline Thornton who married Wm. Needham Jackson the brother of Mary Jackson Thornton and the son of Jordan Jackson and Letha Smith. Eveline was only 4 years of age when her father Herod Thornton, who was nearly 50. Left North Carolina in 1828 and set out for Ga. He packed all of his belonging into horse drawn carts and set out toward his destination with his family in tow. The Chief of the great Cherokee nation “ Macintosh” had just signed a treaty with the U.S Government handing over thousands upon thousands of acres of land part of which included what is now Fayette County Ga. Land that would be doled out to the settlers who wished to make use of it thru a government land lottery. This treaty led to the execution of Chief Macintosh at the hand of his own people. Upon Herod and his families arrival in Fayette County which was then part of Henry County, He bought land lot #255 in the 13th district from a Mr. Dyall who had drawn it in the lottery and land lots #256 and #254 from a Mr. Bailey who had also drawn from the lottery. He built a log cabin for his family on the property that is now known as Colemans Lake in Fayette Ga. He and his family are buried in a small cemetery that is located on this same land. Below is the same information as on the previous page, However it is written word for word as it is found in the Family Bible of Herod Thornton Note the transition from Zilpha his first wife to Phereby his second wife. Spelling preserved in this transcription. (Info obtained from S.T.C) Rebecca Thornton daughter of Herod Thornton and Zilpha his wife was borned the 2nd day of June 1804. Blackman Thornton was borned the 13th day of June 1806. Sally Thornton was borned the 22nd day of August 1810. John B. Thornton was borned the 25th day of June 1813. Herod Thornton Jr. was borned the 22nd day of June 1815. Felix Thornton was borned the 29th day of January 1818. Now we transcend to Herod’s children with Phereby. Haywood Thornton son of Herod Thornton and Phereby his wife was born the 13th day of March 1821. Eveline Thornton Daughter of Herod and Phereby his wife was born the 8th day of July 1824. Now listed are the children Phereby had with her first husband Wm. McClenny. Maryan McClenny daughter of William McClenny and Phereby his wife was born the 1st day of March 1809. Jincy McClenny was borned the 5th of November 1811. William McClenny Jr. was borned the 25th day of November 1814. David McClenny was borned the 25th day of January 1816.

Bramlett One of my Favorite Ancestors has to be my Great Great Grand Father, Wilson Williams. He's not that far away in memory as some folks still live that remember him. He was a kind man who saw the need to take care of his family well, But He did have a VERY SHADY PAST!! No one can say who Wilsons parents were or even if "Wilson Williams" was infact his "Real" name. Before he came to Ga, he was located in Alabama. It is told that he became the participant ,along with one other man in a very heated fight over a fair member of the oppisite sex. When the fight had ended and the dust had settled Wilson Williams stood, Knife in hand over the lifeless body of his unfortunate oponant. Seeing as how this was the late 1800's in of all places Alabama (a Hanging state) "Wilson ,(as qouted by Talmedge Williams,Wilsons Great Grandson) Left Alabama on a fast horse and never looked back." On the other hand one or two other people tell the same story ,but this time around the implement of choice was a field hoe. Moveing along to the next predicament. Wilson Married twice, in doing so made me the target of the old "Im my own GrandPa" Joke that Genealogist so love to use when the chance arises. The names are listed below so I wont regale you twice, but to give you an idea.... Wilsons first wife was my Great Great Grand Mother and they had 3 children together before her death one of which "Jim", my Great Grand Father. Wilson then remarries, His son "Jim" marries the sister of the girl his father marries . One more for the road, Wilson's Daughter Mary Elizabeth Marries the brother of the two women that married her Father and brother. So Wilsons Second wife not only being my Step 2nd Great Grand Mother but also my Blood 2nd Great Grand Aunt! Wison was a self employed "Ditch Digger" and would Charge for his work by the Furlong rather than by the foot. This work had it's toll on Wilsons back resulting in unbareable pain for him.A doctor by the name of "Dr. Bucie" prescribed Morphine for the pain.It helped a great deal untill the family decided that he needed to come off of this drug and this was a mistake as the return of the pain made him "Just plain Mean". His conditon remained on the decline and he was placed in a Hospital in Millidgeville Ga where he died on Oct 30, 1922.

    1. Fayette Folk Lore....Things that went Bump in the night.
    2. S.K Bramlett
    3. Hello, I live near by Fayette and have a great number of surnames from there. My Great Grand Mother and Grand Mother as well as my Mother, Used to tell storys about strange Happenings in the areas between Fife and the Hopeful community. Untill recently I thought it was a family tale untill I heard many other say they heard the same story. This is just a folk yarn, Im intersted in any tales one may know of Fayette County and if anyone has heard of this one..... The tale goes that there were some sisters by the surname of "Conference" ,Spinster sisters. One night something got up under there house, claped the floor boards raised a rucus and in the sisters words, "Sreamed Like a Woman". When it ran from the home, it was said to run and walk up right and was bigger than a man, covered with hair from head to toe. This and some of the below was late 1800's and Very Early 1900's My great grand father who lived in the old homested on Wagon Wheel Trail, Told the story of this same "Thing" Jumping on his buggy in the west bridge road area at the back of Peters wood, Shake the buggy, Scream and run off with the grocerys that were on the carriage. My great Grand Mother who lived just in front of Wagon Wheel on Peters road at the mouth of Peters Woods Tells of seeing something of the Same description , Running thru the field as she was headed tword the out house one eveing at dusk.(Hilary Peter was what they refered to as a wildman, he slept in the woods and foraged for food there, Since all of this happened in the same area, may have been him) My Uncle told of Walking as a teenager thru the woods on the Coleman Lake property on the Thornton Cemetery path and somthing started walking in the woods beside him, the faster my uncle went, this thing went. It was called "THE CONFERENCE BOOGER" Because the Conference sister were the first to talk about it, They were laughed out of town when they told what had happen. I dont beleive any of this, but love folklore and was just interested in how many others among you heard of the Same "FAYETTE BEAST" Which was a secondary name told in storys. In the story it would go as far as Crumptons Mill and Cochran's Mill where it would haunt the Mills at night. Any other Fayette Haint Storys that tie in with the history of the county? Steven
