    3. Fantastic Linda! Thank you so much!!!! Christina Huvelle -----Original Message----- From: Linda Blum-Barton <lblumb@gmail.com> To: gafayett-l <gafayett-l@rootsweb.com> Sent: Mon, Jan 9, 2012 5:00 pm Subject: [GAFAYETT] 1850 Census Hello list! I just wanted to let you know that I finally completed a transcription of he 1850 census for Fayette County. I have worked on it off and on over everal years and checked it a couple of times......it's uploaded here at he USGenWeb Census Project and I'll be adding a link to it from the county ite. http://us-census.org/pub/usgenweb/census/ga/fayette/1850/ It was a difficult transcription due to the handwriting on some pages. It as some obvious errors - in my families I found duplications and missing eople. In studying it, I think it was taken and then copied over by the numerator before turning it in and that these mistakes occurred then. I made my best effort at translating it as close as possible but there is lways room for error. If you find errors that should be noted, please let e know. If you have access to the images and would consider proofreading ll or part of it, please let me know or contact the census project. The index is the most useful part of it and in my own research I have earned that the more indexing that is done by different people, the more hance there is you will find who you are looking for! I looked for a PA ncestor for years in the 1870 census and never found her on Ancestry, eritage Quest, etc. and just happened to pick up a published book in a ibrary that was an index made years ago of the Federal Census for PA and here she was. Looking at the images after that I couldn't understand why he was missed in other indexes because her name was easy to read on the mage but you never know who is preparing the index and how they interpret andwriting. I hope you find it useful! I'll be working on the mortality and slave chedules for 1850 next. Solomon lived most of his life in Fayette Co., GA. Mahala was pregnant and possibly widowed at the time. She had married a John DESHAZER in Houston Co. on 01 July 1833. According to marriage records, she marries a Richard SMITH in Bibb Co., GA in August of 1834. Her children are seen on the 1850 census of Pike Co., GA in the home of her brother, Solomon (who had moved to Pike Co.). They were Aaron "Deshaser", Richard Smith, Jr., Elizabeth Smith, and John Smith. I don't know what happened to either of her husbands. The Smith children were born in AL. ELIJAH BURRELL WELDEN, physician and surgeon, Inman, Fayette Co., Ga., son of Burrell and Martha Anne (McCutcheon) Weldon, was born in Henry (now Spalding) county, May 18, 1844. His paternal grandparents came from North Carolina to Georgia, and were among the early settlers of what is now Henry county. His father was born in what is now Jasper county, Nov. 9, 1806, was a farmer, and died in November, 1869. His mother, a descendant of Scottish emigrants who settled in Virginia in colonial times, was born in Hall county, Ga., July 4, 1812, and died in September, 1874. Dr. Welden was raised on the farm and attended the country schools until he was eighteen years of age. Then, in 1862, he enlisted in Company C (Capt. John L. Moore), Thirteenth Georgia regiment, with which he participated in the following battles: Second Manassas, Fairfax Court House, Second Fredericksburg, Wilderness, Frederick City, Winchester, Strausburg, Harper's Ferry, Spottsylvania Court House, Fisher's hill and Petersburg, where the command was under fire and in the ditches two months. In the engagement at Burkeville station he was wounded in the hip about April 4, and sent to the hospital, but recovered in time to be with his command when surrendered at Appomattox. Returning home to Spalding county, he attended the academy until 1867, when he began the study of medicine under Dr. Edward Knott, and pursued it until 1869, and then attended a course of lectures at the university of New Orleans, remaining a year. Subsequently he attended a course of lectures at the medical college of Georgia, at Augusta, from which he was graduated in March, 1871. He soon afterward located where he now lives, and has established an excellent professional reputation, accumulated property, and acquired a wide influence which he has exerted in the interest of the material and moral advancement of the people. He was a member of the board of county commissioners from 1884 to 1890, and one of the committee which superintended the building of the new courthouse at Fayetteville. His influence has been strongly and beneficially exercised in behalf of every enterprise calculated to develop the resources and build up the county. In connection with his practice he has conducted a profitable drug business in Inman, of which and the county he is a leading citizen. Dr. Welden was married Nov. 20, 1873, to Miss Mary Frances -- born Dec. 9, 1856 -- daughter of Rev. Mozee and Sarah (Hill) Harp. (For sketch of these see that of W. N. T. Harp in this work.) Nine children blessed this union: Minnie Russell, born Dec. 27, 1874; Annie Ellen, born Dec. 20, 1876; William Paul, born March 24, 1879; Mary Emma, born Sept. 15, 1881; John Burrell, born Feb. 1, 1884; Andrew Carl, born July 21, 1886; Sallie Slaughter, born Aug. 1, 1889; Martha Nettie, born March 14, 1892; and Walter Willard, born July 9, 1894. Dr. Welden is a prominent member of the masonic fraternity; has been worshipful master of the lodge, and exalted to the royal arch degree; and himself and wife are member of the Methodist church, of which he has been a steward for fifteen years. I have in my possesion a copy of Crawford's license & marriage statement to Lucinda Davis, I also have a copy of Crawford's probate dated March 23, 1837. I ordered these & they came direct from Fayette County, GA Probate Court. It is signed by Arthur J. Whithead (Administrator) & James A. Newton. With this information, I don't believe Archean is his daughter as the dates are too far apart. I believe Lucinda went back to her last name of Davis at some point, since they were only married 6 months. Does anyone have anything that can link her to Crawford? There was a Quaker community there and he descends from a long line of Quakers. Isaiah and Patsy had a daughter Martha Jane who married Jackson Smith. All of these families seem to have close ties. I do not have any more information on the Chandlers. I have looked at the Quaker community in SC known as Bush River for the Chandler name. A number of families seemed to migrate at the same time. Isaiah Hollingsworth built the Rex Mill near Stockbridge GA. He had an uncle, Joseph Hollingsworth who also moved from SC to the Rockdale Smyrna area. He may have also built a mill in that area. 1. [GAFAYETT] Fort Troup
    2. Linda Blum-Barton
    3. I thought the list members might enjoy reading this article recently shared with me for the Fayette County GAGenWeb site. It will be available on the site linked from the Military pages. Enjoy! Linda B. Searching For The Location Of Ft. Troup, Fayette County, GA. On The Frontier, Fayette County, Georgia 1825 Edward J. Lanham In 2005, I discovered the existence of Ft. Troup which was built in Fayette County in 1825. The fact that such an old fort existed came as a real surprise. Shortly after the murder of Chief William McIntosh on April 30, 1825, Brigadier General Alexander Ware and the men of the 2nd Brigade, 5th Division, Fayette County, Georgia State Militia, constructed Fort Troup. In a letter dated May 19, 1825, Fayette County, Fort Troup, from Alexander Ware to Georgia Governor Troup, Ware makes his case for constructing the fort. "The friendly Indians are in a horrible state, almost every night they take an alarm and fly to the swamps, many a hostile Indian is seen where none is. I have thought proper to suggest to your Excellency, the propriety of blending the whole in one encampment, that is now in my Brigade and cause them to build a fortification that will not only shelter the half naked women and children, but will enable the men, without calling the citizen from his plow, to protect themselves." Ware, his men, and all citizens of Fayette County anticipated an attack from a large hostile band of Indians. During this time, Fayette County was the western edge of the frontier, with Line Creek being the border of Georgia and the Creek Nation. On June 11, 1825, in a letter from Troup to Ware, the governor responds, "Sir, you will receive for public service, 160 muskets, 5280 cartridges, 250 flints, 100 lb. buck shot, and 160 cartridge boxes." Fort Troup was now stocked with the most modern weapons. Two years later on June 6, 1827, the military supplies were sent back to Milledgeville, as the attack never came. So where was this fort? All evidence that I have found points to an area in what is now the southern tip of Peachtree City, or near Starr's Mill. In 1930, a member of the DAR stated that the remains of the old fort can still be seen about 3 miles north of Senoia. Another source states that the fort was located near the intersection of the King's Road and the McIntosh Road (both old Indian trails), which according to historical maps and well-known researchers, is near what is now Starr's Mill. The latest information points to a bluff over-looking Line Creek, west of the new Publix complex on south GA highway 74. That location makes sense, as Alexander Ware owned that property in 1825. However, we found no "bluff." Armed with GPS, metal detectors, shovels, and other needed tools of the trade, John Lynch and I have walked from behind Cooper Lighting in Peachtree City on Line Creek, to an area claimed to be an old Indian Trading Post, north-west of Brooks near the intersection of Whitewater and Haddock creeks. We found several interesting areas, but nothing concrete. Before I close, let me tell you just a little more about Alexander Ware, whom I contend is our own "Davy Crockett." Alexander Ware, born Virginia in 1789, son of Mary (Veal) and Lt. James Ware- Revolutionary War, served in the War of 1812 along side my great-great grandfather, Asa Lanham, who was in the Georgia Militia. He surveyed original districts in Fayette and Coweta Counties, owned or paid taxes on 42 land lots in Fayette and Coweta counties, owned interest in a gold mine and had holdings in Lee, Early, Carroll, and Madison counties, owned lots in Columbus, owned several mills on Line Creek, served in the Georgia House of Representatives, served as Justice of the Inferior Court, commissioner of the Fayette Academy, owned Ware's Store and Post Office west of Peachtree City in Kedron (remains can still be seen), and served as post-master. He was also a Mason, a General in the Militia, and a friend of Chief McIntosh. In 1835, Ware, a bachelor, traveled to Texas where he purchased land in San Augustine County. During the Texas Revolution he joined the San Augustine Texas Volunteers. After surviving the war, he was murdered by a member of the notorious Murrell Gang and robbed of $10,000 in gold. While seeking to find out more about Alexander Ware and locate his burial site, my wife and I spent a week in San Augustine, Texas, searching for clues. The search revealed nothing more than what I had previously found. There is much, much more to this man's life than I have told. Alexander Ware went far in his day by his own effort and achievement, and rose high in the esteem of his fellow men. If his grave could be found, his tombstone would probably read: "Alexander Ware, Pioneer, Patriot, Soldier, Surveyor, Explorer, State Legislator, and Leader." I will continue to search for the location of Ft. Troup and I encourage all of you to help in the exploration of this forgotten piece of Georgia history. Please contact me if you find any leads in this regard. Eddie Lanham, member Fayette Co. Historical Society Brooks, GA ejl.dixie@juno.com
