I am looking for information in regard to my cousin Josephine 'Josie' SPRAYBERRY Mayfield & her husband Pompi 'Pomp' M. Mayfield of Newton County & their family. Josie was born March 1881 to Thomas Oscar & UNKNOWN Sprayberry in Fayette County, Georgia & died 11 June 1954(Thomas' wife Sallie was her step-mother). She married Pompi 'Pomp' M. Mayfield, born 1880 to Silas J. & Susan Mayfield & died 30 July 1959, sometime before the 1910 census. Both are buried Hopewell Methodist Church Cemetery Old Highway 74, Downtown Tyrone, Georgia. Their known children are: Cathie Mayfield born about 1905 Sanford Mayfield born about 1907 William Mayfield born about 1909 Eavy Mayfield born about 1910 Alvin Mayfield born about 1913 Marvin Mayfield born about 1918 Mary L. Mayfield born about 1919 I have been unable to find them in 1930 census. For a while her father Thomas used his step-fathers last-name of Willaford before returning to his born surname of Sprayberry (his Dad, my Uncle Uphrates) died when Thomas was just a baby & Aunt Nancy married two more times, to David Willaford then to John C. Turner. Josie's siblings were: John Thomas born October 1888 George David (Dave) 24 December 1889 Essie L born December 1892, in Covington, Newton Co, GA. Census: 1910, in Henry Co, GA. She married William (Bill) LOVE. Eugene G. 12 February 1894 Mamie (Nannie) Ruth Born, 20 Apr 1897, in Covington, Newton Co, GA. Died, 13 Jan 1918. Burial in Newton Cem. Census: 1910, in Henry Co, GA. Hi everyone, I wanted to let you know if you haven't already heard that the Georgia Death Certificates from 1919-1927 are now available online at the Georgia Archives Virtual Vault - http://content.sos.state.ga.us/cdm4/gadeaths.php There is now access to Historic Georgia Maps through the Virtual Vault - http://content.sos.state.ga.us/cdm4/hmf.php I have started a new project on the Fayette County GAGenWeb site and I would like your input and ideas! It is a surname study and I have begun it with the surname WARD. Please take a look and send me any information you may have to add. If you would like to see other surnames and have data to share, please let me know. I think this is a great way to organize information on the large families that are hard to research in Fayette. http://www.rootsweb.com/~gafayett/surname/surname_studies.htm Linda Blum-Barton

The land that was purchased is apart of the estate of Moses Turner and from my research the land was sold by Henson Turner in 1880. My ancestor and the Turner families were neighbors as well. This leads me to the conclusion that Henson Turner and my ancestor knew each other well. The grave marker indicates he was born October 27, 1920 and died July 27, 1993. The marker also indicates he served as a CW4 in the U.S. Army in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. The marker also indicates he was awarded a Silver Star and Purple Heart. The 1930 census for Fayette County lists a "Therol" McElwaney, born about 1920, living in the household of parents; Franklin and Ora McElwaney. He had four siblings; H. L., Irene, Katherine, and Carl. "Therol" is probably "Theron". Ora H. McElwaney, born July 12, 1897 and died September 30, 1987, is also buried at Westminster Memorial Gardens Cemetery. I have a third son, William who was listed on the 1850 Fayette Co. Census with Wright and Jackson. He was born in 1827 and I think the three boys were by themselves on the census as I believe that their mother died sometime that year. Jackson is my husband's gggrandfather and he is buried in the Palmer/Hobgood Cemetery about 2 miles from where we live in Fayette Co. His daughter, Sarah Frances (Fanny) was my husband's ggrandmother. She was born in 1855 and died in 1923. She and her husband, Henry Harrison Jones are also buried in the above mentioned cemetery. I think one of the girls names might have been Jane, but I don't have a clue as to the others names. I will try to get in touch with Nancy at the address you gave me and see if she can help me out. Lynn, Since Martha may have been living in Spalding County at the time of her death, her obit may be in an old Spalding paper or have you looked there already? I have found that a lot of the death announcements were for men but not many women, that far back. My gg grandmother died in Atlanta in 1918 and I haven't found a death announcement for her, but there is one for my gg grandfather. He died just about 2 months after she did. If you would like for me to look in the records in Spalding Co, let me know. I plan to spend a day at the probate court office during the Christmas holidays (since I'll have a week off) as there are other things I want to look up on my family. Let me know. In the meantime, I'll look in the 1883 editions in Fayette Co. Hi Lynn, In the cemetery book there is a Martha G Smarr w/o R.R. Smarr b Jan 24, 1821 d Apr 21, 1883 buried at the White Plains Baptist Church cemetery. She is buried beside R.R. Smarr b. Aug 25, 1796 d Sept 7, 1847 I can go back to the library one day next week, hopefully, and look for her obit. It appears that RR was 25 years old when Martha was born. He may have been about 45 when they married and Martha about 20. RR only lived 6 years after they were married. Apparently she never remarried even though she would have been about 26 when he died. Interesting! Do you know where Martha and R.R. may have been married? This Martha Ellen Smarr, w/o of Rev. J.R. Smarr, was Martha Ellen Sneed the second wife of Rev. John Reid Smarr. They were married 11 Jan 1876 in Fayette County, Georgia. Scott actually needs a Fayette County obit from April 1883 for his Martha Smarr, who would have been Rev. John Reid Smarr's mother. He needs to prove that her maiden name was McCutchen. There is an 1860 will in "Spalding County Will Book A" for Lucretia McCutchen who names a daughter Martha Smarr along with another daughter and a son. This Martha Smarr is probably the wife of Robert Reid Smarr. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Patricia" <tootles525@att.net> To: <gc-gateway@rootsweb.com>; <gafayett@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, November 17, 2007 9:22 AM Subject: Re: [GAFAYETT] Mrs. Martha C. Hi, I finally made it by the library and looked at the mircrofilm of the newpapers for 1925. Unfortunately, I didn't find the newpaper with Mrs. Smarr's obit in it. I will have to go to the Historical society this week and look there. On the microfilm there were missing editions of the newspaper. In the dates you are looking for there was a paper for June 12, 1925 then the next edition was June 26, 1925. I looked at both of these editions and didn't see an obit for her. I have a book of cemetery records and found her listed there as Martha Ellen Smarr (Aunt Ellen) w/o Rev J.R. Smarr b Feb 13, 1851 d Jun 11, 1925. She is buried at the Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery. If you would like photos of any headstones in Fayette county, please let me know. I have a few cemeteries I need to go to for a some people and I would be happy to take pics for you. No charge for this, I'm happy to do it. I'll let you know what I find at the Historical Society.
