Notes for CORA BELL HUCKABY: Griffin Daily News and Sun, July 2, 1917 Farm Hand Is Charged With Murder Woman Mrs. L.A. Dunn Dies at Her Home Near Woolsey From Wounds Inflicted, It Is Alleged, By Ed Padgett. Beaten With Ball Bat Thursday Afternoon Her Death Occurred Saturday Noon and Man Charged With Killing In Rushed to Atlanta Jail for Safe Keeping. Brooks, Ga., July 2. - Mrs. L. A. Dunn died at her home near Woolsey Saturday at noon from wounds inflicted, it is alleged, by Ed Padgett in a difficulty which occurred Thursday afternoon. Padgett was a farm hand on Dunn plantation, and according to the best information obtainable, had a dispute with one of the Dunn boys over a plow, which, it is alleged, he went to the field and took from the boys, later going to the house where Mrs. Dunn was engaged in her household duties and attacking her with a baseball bat. Mrs. Wilbur Dunn was present and endeavored to prevent the difficulty, but could not do so. Excitement ran high in Fayette county Saturday and Saturday night, and Padgett was carried from the Fayetteville jail to the Atlanta jail to prevent any trouble that might arise. The remains of Mrs. Dunn were laid to rest at White Water cemetery Sunday afternoon, the obsequies being conducted by J.F. Norton, of Griffin. As the body lay in state at the church it was viewed by some 800 people, who attended the funeral services as a last respect to the memory of the deceased. Mrs. Dunn is survived by her husband and six small children. She was a sister of N. D. Huckaby, of Brooks, O.R. Huckaby, of Birdie, Spalding county, A.L. Huckaby, of LaGrange, and Mrs. William Turner, of Fayette. She also leaves other relatives and a large circle of friends. Padgett has a wife and several small children. A coroner's jury held an inquest over the body of Mrs. Dunn and ordered Padgett held on a charge of murder. 1. Re: [GAFAYETT] Brown/Suddeth in Fayette Co.,GA
    2. Linda Blum-Barton
    3. Norma, I am working on a transcription of the 1850 Fayette County GA Census. I can tell you that it has mistakes as I believe other counties in GA do for 1850. In looking at the images for Fayette, it appears that at least part of the 1850 was "rewritten" and apparently the person doing it made errors. For instance, I found one family twice with different people in the HH in each entry. I have a Ward family that the only person enumerated is the Father and there should have been a wife and several children - the wife and children have not been located anywhere else for 1850 but we know they were alive. My John McLean (3rd Great Grandfather) was enumerated in 1850 in Fayette County, GA but he died before the date that is shown on the sheet he is listed on......so, I can only assume that the enumeration was done earlier in the year before he died and then recopied at a later date when it was completed. I have several proofs that he was not alive on that date. Depending on the area they were found in 1860 in Fayette, you might also want to check the surrounding counties in 1850. Henry County's is online - not sure about Coweta but I think it may be. It also depends on the index you are using to search the census with. I have an ancestor in Pennsylvania that I had tried everywhere to find in the 1870 census with no luck, until I found an 1870 Pennsylvania Census Index in book form in a library and voila .........there she was! So, you have to take into account that the indexes are transcriptions and the person doing it may not have known family names of an area and lost alot in translation. I feel comfortable transcribing census records for Fayette County as I know so many of the names but it doesn't mean I don't sometimes make mistakes. Have you tried the new Census transcriptions being put online by LDS? I have worked on some of those as a volunteer and they are checked by a second person almost immediately and I have found them to be pretty accurate. I'll keep an eye out for you in Fayette while I am working on it. There is a link to the FamilySearch.org census records on the Fayette County Census page found here: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~gafayett/census/census.htm I find it most useful to go to the geographic area (use the map on that LDS page) and then pick the resource I want to search rather than doing that first broad search engine that is on their first page. 1. [GAFAYETT] Henry, Willis, Jethro Norris in Fayette County, GA
    2. Can anyone claim or provide info on this family? 1850 Fayette County, GA census, #473/481 ............Norris, Henry, 37, m, farmer, b. SC ............Norris, Margaret, 31, f, b. NC ............Norris, Julia A., 12, f, b. GA ............Norris, Caroline, 11, f, b. GA ............Norris, Jethro, 9, m, b. GA ............Norris, Rebeccah, 7, f, b. GA ............Norris, Martha, 5, f, b. GA ............Norris, Silas, 1, m, b. GA My ancestor is a John/Jethro (or John Jethro) Norris (b. abt 1808-1809 in SC) who moved to Fayette County from Gwinnett between 1850 and 1860. Jethro was in Walton County in 1830 and in Gwinnett in 1840. My Jethro had a son named Henry. This Henry had a son named Jethro, leading me to believe that, given the birth years and birthplaces, these two men may be brothers. My Jethro later moved (or was shifted in a boundary change) to Campbell County by 1870. He also appears in the Joe Brown census (Fayette) in 1863 as exempted from (CW) service, age 55, a shoemaker. Try as I might, I can't find Henry's family in the next census. Ancestry's indexing has gotten so bad, it may be a mis-transcription problem, but I have tried about everything I know, including "Morris" and "Harris," exact and Soundex. There are a couple of deeds in Fayette County for a Willis C. Norris (1856 to 1859) but I can't find him in the census either. I was hoping to determine his age and maybe add him as a brother-possibility to my Jethro. If anyone can claim Henry or Willis and tell me something about them or their families I would really appreciate it. Many thanks, Judy Kilgore Newnan, GA ************** A Good Credit Score is 700 or Above. See yours in just 2 easy steps!
