He was named after his grandfather James Aurthur Gay. But I do not know anything further about the elder James Aurthur Gay. Linda, Wow! I'm amazed and delighted at what I discovered in the remainder of your transcription. The majority of my kin folks apparently joined the church en masse a year after it was formed. It seems that my gg-gf served as church clerk for a while, then most of my folks resigned in 1831 to join a "society of men" from "Authordox Baptist Church." I assume they meant the "Orthodox Baptist Church," - ever hear of that one? Wonder what church they formed? The excerpt from 1854 you included shows that Allen and Etha Linda Reeves were back with the Salem church by that time. I'll look forward to reading future installments to see just how things played out with the rest of them. I have no James Reeves in my lineage at that point in history. However, I have an idea who he might be. He is probably the son of Jeremiah Reeves of Wilkes, county, who was a Baptist preacher and one of the founders of the Ga. Baptist Assn. He had four sons who became preachers also, one named James, who was born in 1784. Here are some excerpts from my notes about him: "Churches Jame Reeves served in: - Served in many churches unnamed. - Was present at organization of Western Association, and was their first moderator. - Two grandsons were in ministry. -Founder of churches in 8 Alabama and Western Ga. counties. - Pastor of First Baptist Church of Lagrange 1-1-1829 tp 12-31-1831. - Pastor of Sharon Baptist Church in Henry Co. 1824. - Either he or John Reeves, or both, was pastor of Bethlehem Church in Jasper Co., GA. till 1824. - On 13 Sept 1826, became one of pastors of Macedonia Church. - Was pastor of churches in Jasper, Butts, Henry, Campbell, Paulding, Carroll, Coweta, Heard and Troup counties, plus some in E. Alabama. He founded many of these churches. - Was minister of Macedonia Baptist Church in Carroll Co. on 17 May 1851, per the Christian Index." Fayette county isn't mentioned, but he apparently got around a lot, so it's possible it's him that's mentioned in the minutes. You might check him out next time you get to Mercer. He's only mentioned in the early part of the Salem minutes, so perhaps he was instrumental in setting up the church, then moved on, which appears to be part of his job, considering the number of churches he was associated with. The current Baptist Association calls that activity "church planting," and they have a big organization that does that sort of thing. I'll send you detail off-line later on who all my Fayette relatives were and how they inter-related. Thanks again for your selfless efforts in doing so much in researching and recording the history of Fayette county. You have done a truly remarkable job. Best regards, Paul Reeves >son of Rodolphus Reeves>G.G. Reeves>James Milton Reeves b.1824>William Reeves >b.1794>Wiley Reeves b.1769 (Latter three lived part of their lives in Fayette county >during 1820-1850 period). ----- Original Message ----- From: "Linda Barton" <lblumb@gmail.com> To: <gafayett@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, September 06, 2009 4:58 PM Subject: Re: [GAFAYETT] Salem Baptist Church Paul, I was smiling when I posted it because I knew you would be excited! Linda, Bless you for transcribing and posting these Salem church records. For a long while I have tried to find out which church my ancestral Reeves family belonged to, and I found them all in these minutes! My g-g-grandfather and g-g-gm William and Camilla (Mille) Reeves joined on April 5, 1828 A day later my ggg-grandfather Wiley Reeves joined. My ggg-gm Rebecca Reeves joined on May 16, 1828. I am also hopeful there may be a clue to the death and resting place of some of these ancestors. You have certainly made my day! I have recently been able to copy some of the records of Salem Baptist Church and I think some of you may be interested in the information found in the records. The church was only in existence from 1827 until 1854. I have transcribed the records from 1827 through 1831 and part of 1832 and will try to obtain the rest very soon. I also included the information at the end of the microfilm when the church was dissolved in 1854. Names included: Adcock Beasley, Biffel, Bentley, Bates, Bolt, Bridges, Blann Cavender, Cook, Chambers, Crider, Clyatt, Cross, Caloway Elder Griffin, Gay, Green, Gibson, Gaskill Harrington, Holder, Head, Henderson, Hubbard, Heflin, Harris, Holmes Johnson, Jones Lee, Lyons Malone, Mercer, Moseley, McDonald Otwell, Osbern Pate, Patterson, Porter, Pearce Ransom, Reeves, Robertson, Rooker Sharp, Stell, Smith, Strickland Weems, Walden, Wilson, Williams, Walker, Whitaker The transcription is found here: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~gafayett/church/salem.htm Enjoy! Hi Linda, I have always relied on you for Whitaker information! As you know, Jared Irwin Whitaker was very prominent in Atlanta, a judge, at one time the mayor, and founder of what eventually became the Atlanta Constitution. Accordingly, his life was profiled to some extent in various Atlanta histories. One of those histories suggests he married Nannie Evaline Allen, after Susan Mabry Taliaferro Whitaker's death. As you have it, Susan was buried next to their son Taliaferro Whitaker. Taliaferro was but a small child when he died. I have his dates if you need them. I do not have any dates for Nannie E. Allen, nor the names of their children. As you may recall, I am not a Whitaker myself, but interested because of their tie to the Fayette County Gay folks. I'm not a Gay either, but that's a long story. As always, my best, Bob J. At 08:44 PM 8/30/2009, Linda Barton wrote: >John I. Whitaker D 9/10 [1872] >of Fayette Co. >Bro. of Judge Jared I. >From Intelligencer Dec. 25, 1867 Dr. B. O. Jones In Memoriam Another valued and worthy citizen has fallen! The firm grasp, the genial smile, the friendly welcome of our long-tried friend will greet us no more! Dr. B. O. Jones, a citizen of Atlanta most of the time since 1850 is gone. He died on his plantation in Fayette County on the 17th Dec. instant, of consumption from which for nearly a year, he had been almost constantly confined to his room. His long familiarity with the nature, tendency[?] and treatment of disease, gave him to understand too perfectly the probably fatal termination of such maladies; and for several months previous to his death he had indulged no hope of final recover. The writer has had the pleasure and advantages of a long and intimate acquaintance with Dr. Jones. For many years a successful and popular practicioner of medicine of the county in which he died, his energy and skill in affording relief to suffering humanity gave him a place in the hearts of those for whom he labored; and many a silent tear soothes the sad heart as he is borne to his last resting place. In the profession of medicine he was a pioneer in the section of his location and the ample store of practical knowledge gained by study and experience, fitted him for the advice necessary to younger members of the healing ce?t. Well do we remember the timely admonition as to the course of treatment applicable in the fatal epidemic of typhoid fever commencing in 1850. His suggestion of treatment, based upon the opinion of its adinamic[?] character and tendency, were soon embraced by the profession generally, and has been continued in practice to the present time. In this a blessing to humanity was bestowed, and with it he closed his professional career. Turning his attention to agriculture, he has for 17 years enjoyed the repose of the quiet pursuit; spending his time at his plantation or his home in town, accordingly as his interest and pleasure required. Though he never filled any political office, he was honored none the less by those who knew him in and out of the profession of his choice. We tender our hearty condolence to his bereaved family. Peace to his ashes. AMERICUS. The foregoing mournful tribute to a good man who has paid the debt which NATURE requires of us, is but just to his memory. For long years the PROPRIETOR (J. I. Whitaker) of the journal was intimate with, and enjoyed the friendship of the departed. He can therefore bear testimony to the many virtues of the deceased, and does not doubt that as his life was a blameless and highly useful one, so will he reap the reward which is pronounced in the "well done" to all who have discharged there duties to their fellow men. Charles Bailey (Tennessee) had a daughter named Miranda, she married Robert Brooks and lived in Holmes county Florida. I believe that these are my paternal G- grandparents. There are several things that lead me to believe this, even tho Roberts middle initial is listed as 'L', and on my grandmothers marriage cert, it shows him as R.A. Brooks. The time and place is right. The county was VERY small back in the late 1800's and they were the only Brooks' listed in that town. My email is shirbusa@netscape.net, if you think any of this sounds familiar, please let me know. I will be happy to share any info I have.
