I only checked the 1860 census for Fayette County, and the youngest child was definitely listed as Thomas, and as a male. But, we all know we must be careful with census records! I have no proof in hand, but I expect John Thomas Mackey was given considerable property and slaves when he married whom I believe was Solomon T. Bridges' and Serena May's only child in 1850. Solomon T. Bridges was quite wealthy, including what he had received on behalf of his wife (Serena May) when Drury May, my ggg-grandfather, died in 1841. At the time of his death in 1841, Drury May owned over 2,400 acres of land in Fayette County, and had 40-50 slaves, all of which was sold by the legatees. Solomon T. Bridges was one of the executors of Drury May's estate. Solomon T. Bridges was listed in the 1845 Tax List for Coweta County, District 1, with 1,800 acres of land and 31 slaves. He was shown with 49 slaves at the time of the 1850 census, about the time his only child married John T. Mackey. I expect he would have been quite generous to the young couple to ensure his daughter's comfort. I imagine that Dr. Page was also a man of means, but he had many younger children to look after, and Martha was his eldest. I suspect Solomon T. Bridges was the major contributor, but I have never researched the deeds. It seems Solomon T. Bridges had a history of generosity, evidenced by information found in his 1883 estate appraisement. It listed 62 notes, mostly from the 1870s, considered "entirely worthless," totaling about $8,000 (quite a bit at that time), all for loans he made to others in need in the community to help them get back on their feet after the War. I expect he had little to no hope of ever collecting. We can discuss these folks further if you wish. I am: bobsedge@sbcglobal.net Interesting family! Bob J. John and Martha's three daughters were Florence Littleton Watts nee Mackey (1856-1923), Mary Lilla Jones nee Mackey (1857-1929)(my great grandmother), and Sarah Tommie Jones nee Mackey (1859-probably 1935). Mary and Sarah married Jones brothers. There was no son Thomas, Sarah showed up as S Tommie on one census. You may well be right about JTM and the Bridges-Stallings cemetery. It is a small cemetery. I have a 1975 report on the cemetery with the listings and the comment that "3 lots - broken pieces, sunk in and can't read". Martha and her parents G H Page and Nancy Ann Gay are at Tranquil, as are two Page children who died before JTM, so I thought they would have put JTM there, too. In the meantime: I see a Jesse Mackey in the 1827 land lottery for Coweta, but no evidence that he ever left Wilkinson County, where he married in 1842, to come to Coweta. Also can't find his grave. I also see a reference in the Coweta archive history online to a 1852 reference of businesses in Newnan and "Thomas Mackey and his fine dray mules". Solomon T Bridges (Martha's great uncle) was the executor of JTM's estate, which was settled on 22 Nov 1859. It included property and 26 slaves - where did young JTM obtain this wealth? Could he have gotten so much from the Bridges and Pages after his marriages, or did he inherit it? Thanks again for writing. John Thomas Mackey's first wife was one of my kin, on my May line. I'll summarize what I know, which may not be new to you. John Thomas Mackey was born c. 1830, died 1859 in Fayette County. I do not know of his parents. I searched both Fayette County and Coweta County cemetery record publications, but could not find him. The closest I found was a John Thomas McKoy (1827-1893), buried at Oak Hill in Coweta County. But, I checked his will, and there does not seem to be a tie. J.T. Mackey's date of death is best evidenced by the 1860 Fayette County census, where, in household 207, we find his second wife, the widow Martha McKey, 23, their daughter Lawrence (likely Florence Littleton), 4, daughter Lilly, 3, and son Thomas, 1. These seem to fit the names of what I have for his known children. He married (1) Sarah Ann Bridges on 12 December 1850 in Coweta County. She was born in 1834, died in 1852 in Coweta County, the daughter of Solomon T. Bridges and Serena A. May. They had Solomon Perry Mackey (1852-1852). Sarah Ann, her parents and her infant son are all buried at Bridges-Stallings in Coweta County. I suspect, but cannot prove, that John Thomas Mackey is also there, given his 1859 death, buried near his first wife, his infant son, and his first wife's parents. He married (2) Martha Olivia Ann Page (1837-1915), Coweta County, 22 August 1854. I believe they had the three children listed earlier. Also of interest to me, her mother was Nancy Ann Gay, another family I research. Hope this is of interest, Bob Johnston Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I was aware of Martha Page at Tranquil and first wife Sarah Ann Bridges at Bridges-Stallings Cemetery, but the date of marriage with Sarah was new to me. I understand there are some sunken/broken markers at Bridges/Stallings, but it would be more logical for him to be at Tranquil. The Pages had the substance in 1859 to put up a substantial marker. I wonder if JTM is not buried near his own parents, but I do not know who or where they are. Thank you again. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
