ANDERSON, OF SUMMIT, KILLED WHILE ENGAGED IN BATTLE IN FRANCE. Hon. Joe S. Anderson, of Summit, was notified Saturday of the death of his son, Capt. James A. Anderson, who was killed while leading his company of 127 men over the top in France, on May 28th. Capt. Anderson was 30 years old May 21st. He enlisted in the volunteer reserve corps when he was 19, and served three years, having seen service in Panama. He went to Mexico during the trouble down there as a second lietenant and after returning from there he left the army for a short while, but re-enlisted with the regular army, and in 1914 he stood examination for a commission and sent to FortJay, New York. He went to France with General Pershing's expeditionary forces and was said to be the first American soldier to set foot on No Man's Land. He was here made a captain and placed in command of a company of the 28th Inf. and was leading this company in battle when killed. His record on the other side was so brilliant that he had been nominated by General Pershing to be a major, and the senate just previous to his death had confirmed the nomination. Capt. Anderson was cited for gallantry in action and had been given a 28-day furlough. He had only returned to his command a few days when he was killed. Capt. Anderson stood very high as a military man and as an officer and undoubtedly had a bright future before him. Surviving Capt. Anderson are his father, Joseph S. Anderson, of Summit, two brothers, Ernest Anderson, of North Augusta, and Dr. Paul Anderson of Summit and seven sisters, Mrs. GE Usher of Adel, Ga; Mrs. JS Vandiver of Ochlocknee, Ga; Mrs. GS Pryor, of Leesburg, Ga; Misses Maybelle and Eylau Anderson, teachers in the Brunswick city schools, Miss Cora Anderson in YWCA work in Blue Ridge, NC, and Miss Grace Anderson, who received her diploma at the ECI Summit-Graymont this week.
