Carol, I don't have much information on the Washington/Johnson County Williamsons. I don't know how or if they are connected to mine in Montgomery/Emanuel. A William Williamson, residing in Washington County, Capt. Woods' District, drew in the 1827 Land Lottery; won a lot in Carroll County. This is the e-mail I received about this particular family: ----- Original Message ----- From: Davisonjv@aol.com To: saffold@pineland.net Sent: Monday, May 05, 2003 11:29 AM Subject: Lydia Williamson's husband Hello I have been trying to connect with Olivia W. Saffold through two different Internet addresses which are no longer valid. I hope this one will be active, since I am interested in her research on the Williamsons of Emanuel Co., GA. I am a descendent of Lydia Harrell Williamson from Burke Co., found in Emanuel in 1820, with her family, and in 1840, alone. Her son, William, b. Waynesboro, GA, Jan. 6,1800, married Sallie Kight, b. SC, c. 1806, dau. of Shadrick and Patsy Jewell Kight. Their son James, b. Emanuel/Johnson Co., Jan. 21,1839, was my great grandfather. To my knowledge, he had two sisters, Martha Maddox 1836-1914 (Kight City Cem.), mother of Mary Maddox (Mrs. W.H. Wheeler) 1856-1944 (Wheeler Cem.) Johnson Co. and Cynthia (Mrs. Kestes) Pinion of Chattanooga. I have letters from Martha, in 1889, spelling her name Mattox, and a letter from Mary, naming her husband and children. These match with the Kite and Wheeler Cemetary listings for both of them with the spelling of Maddox. They are addressed from Battleground, GA, which was just a few miles from present-day Kite. James settled in Chattanooga in 1861, after the Atlanta Medical College where he was a student, closed. There are two possible Williamson males in this line I cannot account for. In 1820, in addition to 20 yr. old William, a male, 10-16 was residing with Lydia. In 1840, in addition to 1 yr. old James, William lists a male, 15-20. I have also wondered if these were Mixoms, grandchildren from a younger Lydia (see below). In 1860 census an R. Mixon (sic), age 19, was living with, and working for W.W. Kite, aged 30. These puzzles are fun but frustrating! In our family lore, the name of Lydia's husband is lost, but her father-in-law was "Quillie" (Aquilla) Williamson, of Burke Co. Lydia was a Harrell, sister of Raymond, David and Elisha, b. England 1760-70 and came to GA while it was still a colony. The only documented source I have for this information comes from a 1914 Chattanooga newspaper article honoring James Williamson, Lydia's grandson, on his 75th birthday. His daughter, my grandmother had a strong interest in and memory for family history, which she shared with me. The references I found in Burke Co. do not quite match with those on your web site for Sterling Williamson. I found Aquilla in the 1793 Headrights, and Lydia, and (brother?) Elisha Harrell as unlucky drawers in the 1805 lottery in Burke Co., which would have made her a widow. I also found her as witnessing a will in Burke Co. in 1793. A Lydia Williamson (daughter?) married Micah Mixom in Burke Co.,1804. I have not connected any of them with the large Robert-Goerge-Benjamin Williamsons of Burke Co. at that time. Except for the 1840 census, which shows William Williamson's property close to his mother's, I find few records of him. That census lists two females 5-10 yrs. One could have been Martha, but the Chattanooga census of 1880 indicates Cynthia wasn't born until c.1847, so there may have been an older daughter. I have found no marriage record, will, guardianship or other legal records for William, with the exception of two jury lists, the latest in 1847, but they could have been Wm. J. Williamson, also in Emanuel Co. then. Mrs. Murray's book on the Kights gives a "heresay" statement that Sallie "married William Williams (sic) in 1846 and moved to Tenn.," but there is obviously some confusion here, and I would certainly like to find out the dates of Sallie's and William's deaths. My Grandmother assumed that Sallie was born near Kite, in 1806, but Murray's notes on Shadrick showed him in SC at that time, and this agrees with Cynthia's 1880 census statement that her mother was born in SC. The 1850 county census must have been sketchy because I find no trace of the family, or of the children, if they were living with relatives. In a visit to the Kight family grave yard in 1936 my grandmother was disappointed not to find William and Sallie and Lydia's graves, although Sallie's parents and Martha Maddox were there. I have wondered if the other young male living with Lydia in 1820 was a brother of William. After James came to Chattanooga, he joined the Union Army. After the war he corresponded with his sister Martha, and had visits from his cousins, Cannie and John Meadows and Billy Kight, et al. but gave the reason for not going back as due to the shameful results of the Reconstruction, which he had supported as a soldier. It leads me to wonder if there were a family rift somewhere that we never heard about. Can you connect this information in any way with Sterling Williamson, or others you have been researching? I am a complete novice at internet searching and would appreciate any help. If any of your data carries a fee, I would be glad to oblige.
