    3. The Atlanta Constitution Oct. 27, 1904 ED SPIVEY WAS CONVICTED JURY, HOWEVER, RECOMMENDED HIM TO THE MERCY OF THE COURT Swainsboro, Ga. Oct. 28 One of the most sensational murder trials ever before the Emanuel County Court was that of Ed Spivey, charged with the murder of Charlie Helton. Spivey and Helton were both infatuated with the Miss Christian Gillis. On June 24, last, there was a picnic at Adrian, and the young lady and both young men were there. An altercation arose between the two young men, presumably on account of the young lady, and Spivey invited Helton off. They had walked only about 50 yards, then Spivey pulled his pistol and shot Helton twice; killing him instantly. The trial consumed two days, the defendant being represented by Judge R.L. Gamble, of Louisville; Gordon Kent, of Mount Vernon and Herrington & Lee of this place. The state was represented by the Solictor Rawlings, of Sandersville; Colonel Lightfoot, of Adrian, and Hon. F.H. Saffold, of Swainsboro. The jury was out about two hours and brought in a verdict of guiltey of murder, with a recommendation to mercy. Anyone have info on this Charlie Helton?? Was Chirstian Gillis the Margaret Christian Gillis , who Married Henry B. Lamb? Dawn
