Was she a Barwick or a Kersey? Emanuel County Marriage Book B shows Zachariah SCREWS marrying and Elis KERSEY, but all Census records and her tombstone identifiy Zack's wife as Lydia or Liddie. I wonder if that should have been translated as "Miss" Kersey, instead of "Elis", which I (and others) thought was short for Elizabeth? In any case, until I can find further proof, I'm eliminating "Elizabeth" as part of her name. Sure would like to know who her parents are! Here are all my notes on Zachariah and Lydia: He was listed as "Zaccheus" on the 1850 Emanuel County Census, but as "Zachariah" on the 1860 Emanuel County and 1870 Jefferson County Censuses. Emanuel Co Marriage Records 1817-1903: Zachariah Screws, to Elis Kersey 06/25/1867 by E. Rhyner, MG. Note: If Elizabeth was not born until 1855/1860 or so, the 1867 year of marriage cannot be correct. In addition, Zachariah was still single and living with his parents as of 1870. Lydia's tombstone gives her date of birth as Aug 12,1860, but Census records show she was born about 1855. According to the 1900 Census, she was born Feb 1854. What was Lydia's maiden name? Some researchers claim that the wife of Zack SCREWS was Elizabeth KERSEY, daughter of John B. KERSEY and Sarah Ann BURRIS, who later married James Bush HOWARD. This cannot be correct, however: Lydia, wife of Zack, died in 1927. Elizabeth, wife of James, died in Florida in 1944. 1850 US Census: Emanuel Co., GA - District 28, Family 130: SCREWS, James 33, b.
